So yeah, this is part two of my short story series. This one I feel might be a little weird.. how the character reacts to.. well you will see, if you want to discuss my reasoning for how he acts then that would be awesome.

10 Years Later.

A hush descended upon the wood on the cool, crisp, Autumn morning. Not a single creature stirred, it was as if everything in the entire world was for this one moment trying to be as quiet and as still as possible as the silent hunter picked his way through the underbrush with bow and arrow in hand. Nuada was just as silent as his quarry, not wanting to let his target know where he was lest it run off. His pointed ears strained to hear even the faintest noise: a rustling of leaves, a careful footstep, a quiet breath. Then, off to the side, a stick snapped. In a flash Nuada spun in the direction of the sound, drawing his bow up and his arrow back in one swift motion. He saw a blur of motion go running through the underbrush and he swung his bow around at it and let loose an arrow. The grunt and moan of pain told Nuada his aim was true. He carefully approached his victim, cautious it could still have some fight left. Nuada pulled aside some branches and there on the forest floor lay a deer, Nuada's arrow piercing it's side. Panic flashed across the deer's face as Nuada came out of the underbrush.

"Shhh," Nuada cooed, "it will be alright, I will end your pain." Nuada drew his knife and knelt beside the injured animal. The deer tried to get up, but it could not. "I thank you," Nuada said, "for your sacrifice so that I may live. Go now unto eternity. You shall have eternal rest." Nuada then plunged the knife into the deer's heart. The deer stared back at Nuada in it's last moments, although it did not understand what the elf had said Nuada could tell that it was content with it's death, and that it understood that it was time to go.

After the deer had died Nuada went about the area and collected wood to make a fire. With the fire started he returned to the deer and carved out the meat. Around this time a small pair of hands and knees fell on top of Nuada's head. "Good evening Ricket, so nice of you to join me for dinner," the Elf said with a smile.

"You are very welcome buddy, but thanks for not getting me any dinner... oh well, I guess I can find some bugs on my own....," Ricket sighed. Ricket was a fairy, a quite small fairy. He stood not much more than 8 inches tall, although he looked a little bit taller because of his long, gangly body. His body looked like the chitinous plating of an insect, except more irregular in texture and shape like that of a tree branch. On his back were two insect like wings and across his chest were several small bone knives which he used to create all sorts of mischief.

Nuada grinned, "what? You don't like deer?"

Ricket flew in front of Nuada's face and stuck his tongue out at him. "No I don't like deer," he chimed back in a sarcastic, annoyed sort of way. Then the little fairy flew off into the woods to go look for some butterfly or tasty spider to eat.

When Ricket finally did return it was after dark and Nuada had finished his meal long ago.

"Oooooooh," Ricket moaned as he fell onto the ground on his back.

"Some bug not settle with your stomach too well," Nuada asked.

"No, I just think there are too many bugs in my stomach....I guess those last 3 grasshoppers were just a little too big...."

Nuada chuckled as he listened to Ricket's regrets. The Elf poked the fire to keep the embers hot, then the Elf and his Fairy companion just sat and enjoyed each other's company. They did not say much to each other, they had known each other for so long there was not much to say, it was just nice to be together. Also Ricket fell asleep quite quickly with such a full stomach, and shortly afterwards Nuada began to feel sleep calling him as well. The Elf poked the embers of the fire another time and then he laid back on the ground, wrapped himself in his cloak, and let the embrace of sleep take hold of him.

***

The soft crunch of autumn leaves woke Nuada with a start. He jumped up from his blanket with knife in hand, and before him stood the majestic beauty of the noblest of creatures that walked the world: a Unicorn. The Unicorn stared at Nuada, only a few feet away and the Elf stared back. Nuada dared not move at all for he could not, he was entranced by the beauty of this amazing creature. The encounter lasted only for a moment, but it seemed to last ages, and then finally the Unicorn neighed and ran off back into the woods.

It took Nuada a moment to come back to his senses, and when he did he hurriedly began collecting all of his belongings, putting out the fire, and cleaning up the camp. Ricket woke up and glared at Nuada for disturbing his sleep, "what is with all the racket!? Can't you see I am trying to get my beauty sleep here!"

"I saw a Unicorn Ricket," Nuada explained, "it stood, just over here."

"So," Ricket asked, not quite getting it.

"It was the beautiful thing I have ever seen...," he paused, wondering if his impetuousness was a good idea, "I am going after it."

"What!?!" Ricket screamed as he flew up in the air, "you're going to kill it!?!?"

"No no no," Nuada said hurriedly, not wanting to be misunderstood, "I... just want to see it again... at least just once more."

Ricket sighed, "you're crazy..."

"Perhaps," Nuada admitted. Then the Elf jumped back up to his feet now that he was done getting everything together. "So you coming?"

"Of course," Ricket exclaimed.

The pair ran off into the forest after the Unicorn with Nuada leading. Nuada marveled at how the Unicorn left almost no tracks or sign of it's passing at all, even through thick underbrush, but to the expert Elf tracker he could pick up even the faintest of signs. Nuada followed the Unicorn as quickly as he could, but even at an average pace the Unicorn was incredibly fast. Still he could tell from the tracks that the Unicorn was not in a hurry, that it was likely just wandering through the forest and that was a good if Nuada ever wanted to see it again.

The Elf and the Fairy tracked the Unicorn all day long, without rest, but in the end the sun began to set and still there was no sign the were getting any closer.

Ricket huffed and puffed next to Nuada as they finally stopped, "oh well, it was a good shot... but I guess it was just too fast."

Nuada was quite sad that he did not get to see the beautiful creature again. "I guess...," he said as the last bits of hope of success began to leave him.

The pair finally stopped and ate dinner before going back to sleep to rest. Nuada stayed awake for many hours after Ricket had fallen to sleep, his mind was restless as he could not stop thinking of the Unicorn.

The next morning Nuada awoke undisturbed, but he still jumped up and looked around in faint hope, but alas the only other thing near him was Ricket. They both ate breakfast and said very little, Ricket could tell that Nuada wasn't really in the mood to talk.

When they were done with breakfast they headed out again. Nuada decided to continue following the Unicorn's tracks, till something else caught their attention, then they would move on. Nuada and Ricket did not move at a hurried pace today, they simply just traveled through the forest, keeping their eyes peeled for anything of importance.

They continued on for several hours till an all too familiar, guttural speech came to their ears through the woods. Immediately Ricket drew his knives and Nuada drew his bow. "Orcs...," Nuada said with both loathing and thrill to have a chance to slay more of the beasts.

"Yeah, let's get the meanies," Ricket said, always happy to kill an Orc or two.

Nuada crept forward, invisible to all except Ricket who knew the ways of the Elf. Nuada moved towards a hill that overlooked the area where the voices were coming from. As the Elf came closer he could better hear what the Orcs were saying:

"Get dat rope on 'er!"

"Wait, wadtch owt!"

"Oucccchhhhh!"

"Grr, dumb 'ittle t'ang, just wait when da boss gets ya."

Then Nuada heard a beautiful sound that his heart could never forget. Amongst all of the yelling and chatter of the greenskins Nuada heard the familiar neighing of a beautiful animal. Nuada hurried his pace, both hoping that he was correct, and hoping that he was wrong. Then the Elf finally crested the rise and down in the hollow were several Orcs and some Goblins circling the same Unicorn that Nuada had been following. Nuada knew it was the same Unicorn, he couldn't explain how he knew he just knew. But what was more important was that the Greenskins were throwing ropes about the Unicorn, trying to catch it. Already they had lassoed one rope around the proud animal's horn.

One of the Orcs was kicked in the face and knocked to the ground by the struggling Unicorn. The Orc soon got back up and he glared at the animal and drew out his crude sword, "time ye wer teached some 'spect." He took a step forward and then stopped and looked down in surprise at his chest to see an arrow protruding out of him. "Dat's funny..." the Orc said before he fell face first to the ground.

All of the other greenskins yelled and roared as they looked around for their attacker. Two more arrows shot of the forest, striking two more of the monsters down. Then the greenskins were getting really frightened. One of the Goblins yelled at his fellows and they all got closer to him, while a couple still held the ropes attached to the Unicorn. Another couple arrows shot out of the forest, this time from a different direction, but instead of striking their targets dead they exploded in midair just before hitting home. The Goblin leader in the middle of the group was deep in concentration as he was reciting some dark incantation.

One of the Orcs laughed at seeing the arrows turned into splinters, "heheh, come out 'n' show yerself you wuss-"

The Orc's sentence was stopped short as a figure dropped out of the trees over head and fell on the Orc's back and then slit his throat before jumping away from the rest of the Orcs before they could react.

Nuada stood facing the Orcs with a mischievous smile as his sword and knife were both drawn with Orc blood dripping from their edges.

"Get 'im you big oafs," the Goblin leader shrieked.

The rest of the Greenskins roared in response and charge at the Elf, intent on ripping him to shreds.

Nuada watched the Orcs come charging at him, and instead of being mentally overwhelmed at the prospect of fighting so many enemies at once he methodically watched and studied their movements, predicting exactly where they were going to be and then the Elf jumped forward just before the first Orc reached him. In a blur of carefully honed movements Nuada ran, dashed, rolled, and jumped through the dozen or so Orcs and Goblins. As he passed he swung his sword to slice cleanly through one enemy at a time. To the Elf it was easy to predict what the dull-witted Orcs would do. Just like a master chess player defeats his opponent ten moves ahead the Elf did the same thing. He knew exactly where his enemies would be, down to their very stance, and he moved to be in the right place at the right time and in moments all but a handful of Orcs and Goblins lay dead.

The survivors backed away from the Elf in fear. "It can't be uh'live!"

"It's uh demon," another cried out in hopeless terror.

"No," Nuada replied with a flattered smile, "just an Elf." Nuada jumped forward, slicing out the Orc's legs from underneath him and at that his friends had had enough and started running into the woods as fast as they could. Then it was just Nuada and the Goblin Shaman. Nuada turned to the shaman, silently challenging him with his gaze which said that the Shaman would not leave alive.

The Goblin spat in the dirt, "nasty Elves! 'tupid sissies! Er time is abbowt run owt!" Then the Shaman raised up his hand and before Nuada could react the Shaman threw a substance to the ground which erupted in flames around the Goblin. And when the fire had subsided a moment later the Goblin was gone.

Nuada frowned, he knew from experience that Goblin Shamans could be dangerous enemies and he would much prefer to kill as many as he could.

With all of the enemies gone Nuada sheathed his weapons and turned to behold the Unicorn which had not fled during the battle. Nuada bowed in honor to the proud and beautiful creature, and a moment later in response the Unicorn came a bit closer. Nuada looked up and he could see a look of trust in the animal's eyes. Nuada slowly raised his hands, making sure to not do anything that might scare that trust, and he gingerly placed his hands on the Unicorn's horn and he pulled off the rope that bound the animal. The Unicorn made no movement that showed it was worried about Nuada, so he raised his hand and stroked the silky, soft mane of the Unicorn. The animal neighed happily in response.

At this time Ricket plopped down on Nuada's shoulder. The little fairy spoke in some odd, low pitched language to the Unicorn, and then he turned to speak into Nuada's ear. "This Unicorn's name is Raheem, and he wants to thank you for saving his life."

Nuada smiled at the thought, but he said to Raheem, "I am honored, but I have no need of anything. I am just blessed to see such a beautiful creature once, much less twice now."

Raheem neighed at Ricket.

"Raheem says to get over yourself, he is sticking with you till his debt is fulfilled."

Nuada looked at Ricket like he was joking.

Ricket held up his hands in defense, "hey, I cleaned it up a bit, you don't want me to literally translate what he said."

Raheem neighed again.

"You know," Ricket said to the Unicorn, "for such a pretty creature you would think you would be a bit more polite..."

Nuada laughed, "very well Raheem. It will be an honor to travel with you."

A few moments later the trio left the hollow together in search of a new adventure and a new battle to fight.

***

Some miles to the north outside a large but rough, wooden shack a pair of Goblins were chattering back and forth. "It's yer fault for not bringin' nuff rope!"

"And it's yer fault for not knowing your magics good nuff!"

The Shaman and the Bully jumped at each other and started wrestling on the ground.

"Ey you two," an Orc shouted as he pulled them apart, "der be 'nuff of dat for 'ater, nowz you gots to do da talkin' with da Big Warboss."

"Da, da, da Warboss," the Bully said tentatively.

"Uhuh," the Orc said, "e's wantin' to talk to ya both."

Both of the Goblins gulped at the prospect of meeting with the Warboss. But if they put it off then they were certain to face the Warboss' wrath. So reluctantly they entered the large shack.

As soon as they entered both of the Goblins fell to there hands and knees and started weeping and groveling. They were both talking so quickly and loudly that no one could understand what they were saying. The huge, hulking form of the Big Warboss just stared at them with boredom before he bellowed, "shut da up!"

Immediately the two Goblins went silent.

"Now tell me," the Warboss began, "why'd I don have no Unycorn today?"

The Goblins were about to both start talking again, but the Warboss interrupted them by pointing at the Shaman. "'Well," the Shaman began, "it was goin' good, we were 'bout to catch da Unycorn, but then out o' no'ere this man comed at us with da arrows and da sword, and he cut our boyz down in split and fore I knew it it 'as jus me 'n' the few 'ucky boyz who 'idn't die."

"Yeh!," the Bully chimed in, "it 'as a man, a reeal good shot too. Kill a boy with 'un arrow, and 'n he hackin' and slashin' all our boyz with his shmancy, curvy, sword."

While the Goblins described what happened the Warboss sat up straighter and straighter in eager anticipation, and then he couldn't stop anymore and he yelled out, "what did dis man look like? 'as he a man? Or 'n elf!?!"

The Shaman stopped and scratched his chin, "oh yeh, he 'is 'n Elf. He had 'ong a'most white hair, and shiny armor, it look liked all pretty and sissy like 'em Elfs like it."

The Warboss roared in both rage and joy, "get me boyz, ur two takin' us to dis Elf."

"But... why boss," the Bully asked, not understanding.

The Warboss jumped out of his throne and grabbed the small Goblin by the collar, "cuss I say so!"

At that the Warboss stormed out of his hall. He walked out of his command area and as he marched through the camp every Orc he passed either saluted or bowed their heads to their Warboss. He finally came to his own personal stables and he addressed the Boss in charge of the Warboss' cavalry.

"What's it be to'day," the Boss said to the Big Warboss.

"To'day," the Big Warboss started, "to'day wesa goin' to hunt us 'n Elf." And then underhis breath the Big Warboss muttered with seething hatred, "an' get me eye back."

As the Warboss mounted his mighty charger he lifted a hand to the iron plate nailed to his face that covered the now empty eyesocket. "Orcs never forget, never forgive. 'venge 'ill be mine and I'll use dats Elf's skin to 'ecorate my hall!" At that Big Orc Warboss Grimgor Ironeye let out a mighty battle cry and he and his riders rode out of the encampment and back into the woods. Today the tables will turn and the hunter will become the hunted.

So why Nuada is so enamored by the Unicorn felt a little odd to me as I was writing. But, this is how I see it: Elves are creatures that pursue perfection in everything they do. Like in sailing, art, war, farming, building, and particularly emotional/moral perfection. Elves pursue perfection, but they will never achieve it (because achieving pure perfection is simply impossible for any mortal). And so a Unicorn to an Elf a Unicorn is sort of the embodiment of everything they want to be. Unicorns are perfectly beautiful, perfectly noble, perfectly graceful, and perfectly pure.

So, anyway, that is why Nuada is in such wonder of this Unicorn character.

I think it was fine. With the way unicorns are why wouldn't he be that fascinated?
PostPosted: Sun Nov 14, 2010 9:16 pm

I dunno... it just kinda seemed odd to me. I guess I thought he was sounding a little too obsessed with an animal...

So, what do you think of the story thus far? (also, don't read the character profiles I posted yet, there are some spoilers)

I won't and its pretty good so far. I have an idea for a second charrie already and you'll love him. Well.... I will anyways but I think you will appreciate the idea some.

I like your stories, every time you post them I read them. I'm making one about Cody form the Asain rp. He is a very complex character and i wnated elaborate on him more. Ill likely post it when I am done with it.

Well thank you biggrin

Sometimes I like to post short stories as back stories for my main characters... this character inspired me to write something.

Oh, and the Orc and Goblin speak? Is intelligible? I have had trouble making them sound as dumb as rocks but still being able to understand them at the same time.

Now that I think about it Zark sort of sounds like a genius compared to these Orcs...

Maybe its because Zark has been around humans for so long. they get use to others accents and it starts to rub off. that happens to me when I'm down south to visit my family a lot.

I liked the speech. Its going to be difficult for me to write it if I ever write a creature like that speaking. Which I'm sure I will. I'm just not good at writing different accents like you are.

lol, yeah... I hate it when I speak improperly... it is my mom's fault >_> she keeps on say "drownded" srsly, no joke....

Well I actually did some research on Warhammer Ork characters, basically I tried copying their already established style of writing because it is quite hilarious at times. I also compiled a list of "Orkish" terms

Big Warboss - Is so powerful that he not only commands many Tribes, he can also have other tribes join him just by telling them too. He is able to lead Waaghs!
Warboss - Commands several Tribes
Big Boss - Commands a Tribe
Boss - Commander over several Mobs
Big 'Un - A larger than normal Orc, sometimes they hold Bully positions, or sometimes they just hold a higher social status in a tribe.
Bully - Commands a Mob
Lobber - Artillery crewman
Arrer Boy - Archer
Boyz - Warriors
Snotling - Goblin of extremely low status, a cross between slave and extremely poor (he still has freedom, but his social status is beyond poor)
Mob - Unit of Soldiers (generally from 10-50)
Tribe - a congregation of at least a 100 Orcs and/or Goblins and up to several thousand. Everyone in the tribe fights in battles, and when they are not in a battle and just living then they tend to separate into smaller groups for mutual protection and to help forage for food. Orcs do not provide food for their citizens, you have to find it yourself.
Waagh! - a cross between invasion, immigration, and a crusade. It is a religious move of many different tribes into a new region, and on the way they attack and destroy any non Orcs. Also it is another term for an army that is on a Waagh!
Gobbo - Goblin
Ork - Orc
Sissie - Elf
Stunty - Dwarf
Humie - Human
Piggy - Boar

Here is also a site that you might get some inspiration from (they also have backgrounds on the Empire, High Elves, Dwarfs, and Dark Elves which have heavily influenced what I have put into the rps) http://www.warhammeronline.com/armiesofWAR/greenskins/Greenskins.php

If for no other reason read some of the quotes from the characters, they are quite funny.
