So at the moment I'm in a dilemma; my family is all christian some of them are overly christian and "Christmas" is coming up and they're all talking and stuff and I really don't want to celebrate it and I believe most of them don't know I'm atheist...
When should I come out?
I can easily pull my sister (The one who understands me the most) and talk to her and tell her and such...
OR i could do it during Thanksgiving...
Ect..
I have no idea when to do it without ******** "Everyones lives because they have a atheist in their family!"

well, ive honestly never had that problem. i never understood religion, and i was very young when i realized. (although, my parents tried to brainwash me into believing.) so i personally have always been open about it, but i highly doubt CHRISTMAS would be a good time. i would go with thanksgiving. atheism is thanksworthy, right?

Well yeah that is pretty obvious I don't want them to all buy me gifts and such I see no point in them really plus I'm not even really that materialistic anymore I mean i do get a few things I want every now and then but usually with my own money.
Never really was good at making lists of things I wanted.
Anyways ya I suppose I'll try it during Thanksgiving but I really don't want to do it infront of everyone at the same time though ;

Well, your profile states that you're 16. If I were you, I wouldn't completely out myself yet. If your family are as fundamentalistic as I'm understanding, consequences could result as a result of "punishment" from your parents. One could be that they'd never trust you the again, but I could think of much more harsh consequences. Really, I wouldn't come out until I've left my parents' home and after college; I'm 18, 19 in April, and I still haven't taken my left-foot out of the closet; my parents are the only people who do not know of my religious views or lack of them.
Really though, I'd suggest emailing tv@atheist-community.org with your problem. If you do, be sure to put in AETV as the subject to pass their spam filter.

No they aren't exactly fundamentalists hell we haven't been to a church in over 10 years now.
And if they do "punish me" or send me to some christian classes, I'll litteraly go straight to my shool counselor and tell them I'd like to meet with someone to discuss where I'm living and see if I can get out of my house and such.
I will not go to christian classes or any of that.
If my parents can't respect me being atheist when I tell them than why should I respect them at all?

If you guys haven't been to church in 10 years, I don't think there's going to be a lot of trouble. They're not practicing Christians, after all; they're basically just scrolling down and clicking the "I Agree" on the Terms of Use. They'll just wonder why you don't believe anymore, but there most likely won't be much trouble.

Tried telling my sister and my mom that I'm atheist today when they said "Oh and he's got money on his debit card for christmas" (He being me) I replied "Uh, I'm not celebrating christmas this year..." "Why not?" "Because i'm atheist?" (I said it like a question as if saying didn't they know that) They both were like "OH ya that's just a stage kids go through..."
I was gettingl unch so I just went back to what i was doing completely aggravated that they think I'm just kidding and s**t.
I was litteraly about to yell out "Jesus isn't even ******** real and you want to celebrate it? You know your own ******** church said he wasn't!"
So yeah.
No shitstorm yet.
Hopefuly (Like lord Balmung said) There won't be because they don't practice...
Though my one sister (Amy) will more then likely hate me or not accept me being atheist and such since she is a full on "HOLYSHITICANTMISSCHURCHFORASINGLEDAYEVENIFITSSOMEONESBIRTHDAY!" (Don't bother reading that basicly I was being sarcastic)

Remind your parents that gift-giving comes from a pagan practice that also came with celebrating the birth of Christ on the Winter Solstice (December 25). Remind them that Christmas is no different than Sunday; you're supposed to go to Church and listen to the same boring story all 80 years of your life.
Their church said that Jesus wasn't real? Care to elaborate that for me a little bit?

I mean, I know it's been speculated by historians that Jesus was an over-exaggeration of a Roman Prince, but that's all that's been said. And if the Vatican had said that Jesus was a made up savior-god, then the entire core of Christianity will have fallen.

I'd say, if it comes up again, just calmly and logically explain why you don't believe. If you get angry and yell I think it might make you seem more like you're trying to be rebellious, rather than having made a thoughtful decision.
If they still can't see that you're not just going through an angry stage, well, then I'm not sure what you can do. Some people are just stubborn like that. I guess they'll see in a few years, when you haven't magically turned into a faithful Christian 3nodding
