So, did anyone else out there have as much fun with this episode as I did? This is the kind of story I started watching Sanctuary for. It may not have advanced the season plot, but it was the classic abnormal hunt, not to mention there were a few nods to Stargate SG-1 in there. We got appearances by Gary Jones, who played Chief Walter Herriman on SG-1 and if you remember the episode Window of Opportunity, Robin Mossley, the actor who played the alien archaeologist Malakai, was in this episode of Sanctuary, too (seriously, if you don't remember Window of Opportunity you either haven't seen much of SG-1 or should consult a physician).
I've got only two major criticisms this week. First was the return of the weird editing. Editors, if you think it generates some kind of dramatic effect, you are sorely mistaken. It just makes the screen busy. Second, we have the set design for the bank vault. What small town bank looks like that on the inside? Also, how often is the vault accessed by such a fancy-looking elevator? I can't understand what possessed the set designers (pun intended) to make it look like that. Sure, you don't want a drab set all the time, but it only made sense to make that particular set be drab. It's a bank vault!
Also, speaking of Stargate, I have a bone to pick with Syfy over cutting the opening sequence. They did that to Stargate, too. Sure, the reworking of the theme music was a bit odd to me, but now we have next to nothing at all and I'd much prefer the weird-sounding new theme to that. Apparently cutting the opening isn't to make room for more show, either. It's to make room for more commercials. When they did this to Stargate, the fans petitioned to bring the theme songs back. I don't think Sanctuary has as big a following, sad to say.
And now back to Gary Jones. He was great in this, just like back in the day with SG-1. They really played up his connection to the production team, too, given what character he was playing and what he got to say. Also, since Amanda Tapping has gotten better with her Magnus voice, it sounded so strange to hear her talk without it, not to mention I think she was over-enunciating most of what she said so it sounded like her real accent was fake. Of course, it had to be old-pal Gary who spoke the line "I knew that British accent was fake."
Again, we got a pretty good performance out of everybody (though random psycho pink-dress girl was an odd addition to the bunch) and the story was great. Nice character interaction, character development and again with the CGI. The parasitic creature coming out of the host's mouth had Rainmaker Studios written all over it, whether or not it was actually them. I thoroughly enjoyed Bank Job, but feel free to say whatever you want about it in here.
