As I have seen many people entering this guild who are taking Psychology or AP Psychology at their High School, I got to wondering what topics are covered in their classes. I did not take a psychology class as a High School student so I'd like you all to let me know what principles you crazy High School kids are learning.
If you are currently in a High School Psychology course, please let us know what the major course topics are, and your general impressions of the class.
If your are a College or University Psych student who has taken a High School Psych program, I would be interested in your opinions on the class considering your increased knowledge.
Thanks everyone, hope to hear from all of our High School Psych Students!

I took AP psych and we covered general topics from behaviorist theology to abnormal psych to the psychology of sex (actually, we skipped that chapter, but it was in the book). We actually used a book intended for a college intro to psych class, so I imagine it was very much like taking that class except it centered around the AP test. (I got a five on the test)
When I took intro to sociology, abnormal psych, and then social psych it was all really easy. Every thing in abnormal psych was what we learned in my AP class + 10%, and every thing in social psych was my AP class + intro to sociology + 5%. These are all lower level courses but the point is that my AP class prepared me very, very well for them.

I feel I should state that my health class in High School had a section on psychology. It was more concerned with depression signs and some other basic abnormal psychology. It wasn't either very thorough or very accurate.

I was in a fairly small school, and the only psychology course was a half-year course that joined up with Sociology. They had the same man who taught history teach these two classes, and he had not studied either one of them except as integrative study credits in college. I thought that was a little odd, so I didn't end up taking the course. Glad to see that other high schools are at least attempting.

I'm in a highschool psych class now, although it is AP and we are using the same book and almost same curriculum as my boyfriend, who is currently taking it in college. xd
We cover psych disorders, treatment options, memory, learning, dreams, neuroscience, motivation, emotion, sensation/perception, and a bit of child development. I love that we have a wide variety of things that we cover, I think it really caters to everyone's personal interests. The only problem with that, however, is that we don't get too in depth on anything. sad

My Psych teacher doesn't teach much. He's introduced many different topics, but he ALWAYS sidetracks and tries to vaguely relate one of his life stories to the topic, but we always end up a little less intelligent after sitting through one of those.

I'm currently taking AP Psychology. We first studied a basic overview of the history of psychology. Then we moved on to a chapter about critical thinking in psychology, which mostly covered different methods psychologists used and the scientific method. We then proceeded into a chapter on neuroscience. Then we moved on into a unit on Nature and Nurture and Developmental Psychology, which included a project in which we interviewed four people of different age groups and compared and contrasted the answers, relating them to terms from the chapter. We just finished our unit on Sensation and Perception, and now we're about to start a chapter on States of Consciousness.

She lay down on the grass, Looking up at the sky, thinking, it’s all she can do. If she disappeared she would not be missed. She will be gone just like everyone else.
Getting up from the grass, she walks on the sand, looking outward towards the sea. She walks into the water high up above her knees.

I took a Psychology class in high school. This is a list of the curriculum from memory, so I might be missing some stuff [and I'm not sure if it is in the exact same order, but it's as close as I can remember].
Different Theories Biological factors & Neuroscience: - Brain & parts of the brain. - Sight/Eye - Hearing/Ears - Smell/Nose - Taste Developmental Psychology [we stayed on this one for a month or more.] Motivation/Emotion Memory Clinical Psychology Sleep/Dreams Abnormal Psychology Therapies/Treatments [And we covered Social Psychology via end of the year projects.]
Even though I didn't take the AP course, I took AP review lessons, with my psych teacher, every Monday after school. I don't know what I scored on the test, but I guess I'll find out soon. These are quite a lot of topics to cover, but we've covered them all and in good depth. Perhaps is we spent one whole year on a specific topic, we would learn more in depth, but for having learned all of these topics, I think we've more than skimmed the surface. Luckily, my other classes were simple classes so that I could focus on my Psychology class. I loved my senior year of high school. It was so easy going, and so fun.
Speaking of Neurosciences, I also attended my high school's Neurobiology class. I didn't sign up for the class, nor did I take any of the tests, but I did attend as many classes as possible, which has increased my knowledge of the science, and aided me with my psychology learning. I wouldn't mind actually taking a class like that in college, and I hope to.
I really love the subject, if you couldn't tell.. =3 And I am so glad to have had the teacher I did. She taught half of AP psych last year, she was a long term substitute for a teacher who went on maternal leave. She taught no AP classes this year, but next year she's going to be teaching only AP. She is really smart and kind. The only people who hated her were the people who were failing, and those people were the slackers. She wasn't mean to them, she was just strict, which is one thing that I like about her. She's strict when she needs to be.
P.S. If you couldn't tell, I really like talking, and I'm really excited to talk to the people in this guild... I may seem like a smart-a**, but I don't try to be, so sorry if it seems that way. I'm really not a bad person. 4laugh
~~~♥~~~♥ Narc Lit ♥~~~♥~~~ The waves softly hit her legs. She looks at the sunset and its yellow-red hues she walks into the sea, farther and farther, opening her arms towards the wave. The water is high up to her hips. The wave comes towards her. She looks at the wave with her arms stretched out; the water starts to rage, the wave hits her body hard. Then the water calms down. The water recedes, then darkness falls, and all goes dark. The sun goes down and the day is done.
When I took the AP class back in Highschool, we covered the entire book in one semester, starting with developmental psych... now that I'm taking the Psych II in college, it's pretty much repeating the whole course over again.
I suppose it depends on the instructor as well...
