I dunno, Most roleplayers I've met were gamers. I know none of my friends could write for beans.
That said, I've never even heard of NNWM.

I didn't know about it either until Wednesday really when I came across this 99th page test. It was an interesting concept.
"Open the book to page ninety-nine, and the quality of the whole will be revealed to you."
In other words take a book, just about any book and turn to page 99 if it has that many pages. Then just read that page. In most cases you'd find out if the book if worth reading more of based on that one page.
I gave it a try with the on closest to me 'Howl's Moving Castle'. The paragraph alone told me that I would have read the book if I hadn't before.
But at the same time it doesn't always work. The 99th page of 'Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell' was boring.

I find that Role Players are usually good storytellers, but not necessarily good writers. There's a major difference. I myself had not heard of this month, but I may just start working on for next year sometime. I'm finding that I'm getting much better at telling my stories just from this guild, and reading a few other RPG based books.
tvtropes.org is also a really good place for reading about various plot points, hooks, holes, loops, etc. But the site has been known to suck people in. For example:
Hey I know where I can find some information on Princess Bride, I'll just go check it out real quick. Won't take five minutes...
"2 hours later". Honey, you should probably get off the computer, your shift starts in just under an hour.
What?! Are you crazy? I only just got on the computer at 9. It can't already be morning... Can it? *looks at clock* OMG!! I Gotta run. YaaaHH!!! *goes in to panic mode*.
So be careful when looking through that site. I personally was stuck on the site for two months (with minimal food, sleep, motion, etc.) If it weren't for my work and classes, It would have only been a month and a half. But I needed the hours and stuff.

Oh oh oh oh I totally was and now I'm so far behind that I don't think I'm ever going to catch up.... stupid watcher in my head keeps telling me my idea is no good. *goes to hide and pout*
How is everyone else's writing going? I personally find the section on procrastination especially helpful.

I was going to, but by the time Nov 1st rolled around, I hadn't thought of anything, and most of my writing buddies had decided not to do it. I've been writing anyway, but it's all a fan-fiction made specifically for one friend.

I had thought up an idea after my friend and I were discussing the subject of some movies and stories. We realized a pattern in things and was talking about it when an idea for a story popped into my head; as always I just started telling him about the idea a sort of skeleton to the plot.
He said that it was an awesome and would make a great short story. But I had to turn the idea down thanks to the fact that I'm always doing that. I'm writing one thing and then suddenly an idea for something else pops into mind and I start on that putting my current work on the back burner and then the cycle starts all over again.
So he suggested a joint project, he'd write out the story and see how it goes after I bounce off more ideas off him and the like.
That was a few months ago and now I'm starting to find myself in the same situation that Wyn-Kitty was a little whiles back. He keeps doing things and making it a bit more difficult straying from the original idea or at least the basic idea and the main point of it being symbolic. I keep reminding him of it so much I sound like a broken record or scratched/dirty CD or a corrupted MP3 file take your pick.
For instant towards the climax of the story (I can't tell you what it's about because I'm sure he'd want to get it published) he said he was wondering if he should have the main character attack his friend or in a moment of um...well loss of his mind rape her.
When I got the IM I shouted "What the ******** is he thinking?!" at my computer then had to go back and tell him again "SYMBOLISM" don't try to be dark with this, it's a turn off to the story when it wasn't dark like that throughout.
I mean if you read a story that was moderately sweet and romantic and then boom say someone comes up from behind and kidnaps and torture the hell out of someone for a reason just slightly hinted upon then leave them for dead in the gutter it doesn't really flow right. Right?

The whole point of Nanowrimo is literary abandon so even if it doesn't make sense in the story write it anyway, go back the next month and organize it.

Sorry I can't do that. Besides I can see that he's trying to be like Stephen King and one other author I can't recall at the moment rather than develop his style on his own. And that annoys me to some degree. Before he tried to draw but he was always trying to be as good as some manga artist and got discouraged and quit only getting his ideas out through buying commissions.
I feel that if he doesn't develop his own style and get rid of some of his arrogance (really it's not arrogance but something akin to it given his poor self-esteem) he'll be stuck where he is.

Back in my writers club at high school we read this article called the watcher at the gate, and it's all about how you mind is like a dam and there's a watcher looking over it and only letting slow trickles of water (being your ideas) out. So in order to help get over the writers block we created watchers and personofied them, than we created champions to defeat them.
It sounds like your friend's watcher is simply whispering in his ear that he has to be as good as someone else, and that's a problem a lot of writers face, so how about you be his champion? Tell him all the things you like about his own style, follow the general rule P-C-P, Praise correct praise and than maybe you might be able to get him on a better path. But just correcting him all the time isn't going to get him or you anywhere. Let him write like the other writers but than tell him that you think his writing is better when he doesn't include things that are similar to other stories.

I used to write jointly alot, actually.
It was pretty easy to keep track, if you handled it a little like an RP, together to agree on setting and details of the world, but you write for your own set of interconnected main and supporting characters, trading off when you need input from your partner's set of characters.

I've been encouraging him to write for a few years now. He finally got something accepted on this site. I forgot the name of it but I did help him with one idea in it when he was trying to figure out how a stolen item could be returned given that the thief was dead.
But really this is my brainchild so I'm being a bit rougher with him. He made up a list of friends in the story and gave them all these odd nicknames and it just didn't feel right/natural. So I sort of called him on that. In a group of five really only one or two should have such nicknames the rest should just have a sort of shortened form of their given name sort of nickname. That was he wouldn't waste space explaining how they got it.
