I finally got a car about a month ago and it has been nothing but a big headache. In order to put the car in my name it has to pass smog, which is REALLY stupid. I have until the end of November to deal with it.
First it wouldn't pass because the check engine light was on. What that has to do with emissions I have no Idea. So I got the wire that was causing the light to come on fixed. And guess, what. Almost immediately it came back on! Now it is a valve malfunction or something like that. Luckily I was able to mask the problem so the computer wouldn't pick it up.
So my mechanic hooks the car up so smog it. The stupid computer said that I have to take the car to a smog only station. WHY! What difference does it make who does it as long as is passes, right?
I took the car to the stupid smog only station (which charges $10 more than my mechanic) and it failed because their computer can't communicate with my car's computer. They said the the sensor was broken. I called my mechanic so he could fix it and he said there is noting to fix. His computer works with my car just fine. So basically there is nothing wrong with the sensor.
I don't know what the hell I'm supposed to do here. This is a no win situation. My car can't pass smog because the only place I can take it won't work with my car. I don't see why I should be completely ******** because of a problem that can't be fixed. And all because DMV decided that I have to go to a smog only station for some ridiculous reason.

It is in pretty decent shape for what I got it for. It was only $400 and it needs maybe $300 worth of work. I think basically paying $700 for a decent car is worth it. Plus I have a mechanic friend who can do most of the work for me so I don't have to pay someone else $75 an hour.

I looked the car up on kelly bluebook and with the repairs done it is worth $1,200. Basically paying $700 for a $1,200 car is definitely worth it.

Try applying to a government program, they usually pay the fees for you.

I've got all the fees paid. And I've got an appointment with a new mechanic who is willing to spend the time to get the problem fixed. Actually fixed, not just masking it so I will shut up.
