I don't really know how many of you are greek myth fans and all that, but me and my real life friend, BlackMagic, one of the VC's, are both fairly obsessed about stuff like that. (Well, not obsessed obsessed. We just... Well let me put it this way. If you gave us any random word you could think of, we can easily put it into a category dealing with the Greek Gods. That's some hardcore dedication right there!) Anyways, has anyone actually seen the Percy Jackson/ Lightning Theif movie? It came out in February of this year, and I personally think it was pretty kick-a**.
As for the five book series, I finished them all many moons ago. I am now in the process of reading the first book of the second percy jackson series that came out October 12th.
Any other fans out there?

I like Greek myth a lot, too, but I don't think I can put a random word into a category about Greek gods, though . . . I'm lucky if I can figure out which minor gods are which! : P
And I LOVE RICK RIORDAN! I've read all of the PJO series (except for The Lost Hero . . .) and the first book of the Kane Chronicles. But I didn't really like the movie. The characters didn't fit the character description very much, and the plot was only barely like the plot in The Lightning Thief. But I guess that the people who cast them had poetic license on who to choose, and the plot wasn't very similar because they weren't sure whether or not there would be a sequel, but still . . . I didn't like it that much.

I love the whole Greek myth / Percy Jackson thing... but not dedicated enough to fit any word into a category on Greek gods. What can I say? I have a short attention span. it's hard for me to dedicate myself to anything. But I do seriously love Rick Riordan's stuff. IT MAKES ME SO JEALOUS OF MY FRIEND! He went to some bookstore to get The Lost Hero, like the day it came out. At the time, Rick was autographing those "signed copies" you'll sometimes see on the shelves, and my friend actually saw him there autographing the books and eventually leaving the store. HE'S SO LUCKY!
Anyways, the movie: the plot for it wasn't really like it, so I was disappointed. Usually when you read a book that's going to be put into a movie, you expect it to at least be similar. But when I saw the PJO movie, it was like the only similarities were the names of the characters. I was a little depressed.

I wanted to buy The Lost Hero, so my parents said if I "behaved," they would take me to a bookstore. But apparently I didn't behave enough, because they're not buying it for me yet. : ( So I have to reserve it from the library. 30 holds to go . . .

Is it alright if we can discuss the various versions of Aphrodite's existence, or speak of Harmonia for one thing, in Greco-Roman Lore?
As for the Camp Half-Blood meta-series, i love that series, in all honesty. biggrin
Also, i thought the movie was good, but not great.

The people in the first book are supposed to be all 12 years old, and they get one year older for each book. So if Percy's 16 and Annabeth's 24, then in the 5th movie (the books goes up to 5, I think) Percy would be 20 and Annabeth would be 28 when they're supposed to be 16. Scary . . .

If you wanna know what I am here: Christian Roman Catholic or Eastern Orthodoxian? Admittedly i'm Catholic myself, but i don't trust myself very much in that case. That would not be the most scariest part about the movies if they go with the sequels, but i just hope that they can go all-out on Hades' depression when the 5th movie came out and not before. Also, they need to bring in the idea of resurrecting Kronos, or something along those lines, since the novels brought him back in a weakened state.

I love the Percy Jackson books and they are so awesome but I think the movie ripped them off. The movie was just wrong! I can go on forever saying all of the things that the movie did wrong but it won't because it will take up too much space and time.. stupid movie -.-

I haven't read the series but I did see the movie, and I thought it was decent. I think I enjoyed it more because I already had read some Greek plays from my high school English classes (like The Odyssey) and I saw the documentary Clash of the Gods a few weeks beforehand. My favorite parts were the Lotus Eaters and Medusa, although translating hers and Poseidon's relationship to "dating" seems like disneytizing in retrospect. Still, pretty clever one how they made everything more modern, although it makes me wonder why the setting is in America and not Greece. Maybe because our forefathers wanted a society based on Greek ideals? Then the Free Masons might have went to Greece, looted the Greek's stuff and kidnapped Medusa, then sailed back to America...
And I won't read the series. I don't have the free time, I'm not too interested in a "Greek Harry Potter" (sorry if that offends any PJ fans, it's just my cynicism talking), and everyone's comments about it not being like the book is steering me away. I hate it when movies are not faithful to the book/legend if I have already read it, such as the recent Clash of the Titans. It's the same reason why I won't read the book series of How to Train Your Dragon; I already liked the movie and now I don't want to ruin the illusion by reading what it was supposed to be like.

Actually, in some versions of the matter with Poseidon and Medusa, they really went out and all that jazz, but apparently Poseidon and Medusa tried mating with one another at Athena's holy place, which is frowned on to mate in places like that, in most societies.
Its hard to fully explain all that and more, but if its of use, i heard some of the members of the Round Table, in some interpretations of the various versions, may have been descended from the Gods of Olympus, or at least from Aphrodite's golden womb.
I have an entire thread where we discuss things like that in the Books section, and if i am permitted to do so, i'll bring in the link.
That in mind, i thought it was the greco-roman equivalent to The Dark Is Rising + The Underland Chronicles, really.

Interesting, because I also heard a version where Poseidon had forced himself upon Medusa, and even then Athena punished her because it was a male-dominated society where women were more likely to be blamed than men were. It also happened in a temple dedicated to Athena, and Medusa was supposed to be one of her chaste priestesses, so her "doing it" was a major crime.
Hmm, I haven't heard of The Dark Is Rising or The Underland Chronicles before. I'll have to look those up.
