Just this Wednesday, I had to compete in my taekwondo's school sparring tournament. I went against another person around my weight. We both love to attack more than defend but, we do good in both. In doing so, we got many warnings because we would end up kicking each other's butt, literally and hitting too hard to the head. We ended up getting 2-1. Not good. We get many warnings and penalties in sparring. Could any of you tell of your experiences and the sort of warnings/penalties, if there are any.

In judo you now get penalized for grabbing the legs. This is because of competitors at the olympic level demonstrating a wrestler type fighting style uncommon to judo. The olympic comitte banned it. If you initiate an attack by grabbing the leg its a "hansukomake" or disqualification. Ive seen a few guys who had the match in the bag give way to old habits and do a leg pick, which was textbook judo! and then get disqualified. Since then they've reformed the rule with a tad more lenciancy but it still stands... ive been disqualified for it at a local competition...but i fought 2 divisions and did not make that mistake again! twisted

While I don't practice competitive martial arts, my brother (a traditional TKD fighter) loves to. He was in a competition recently and was doing rather well, but in his third bout a case of bad judging got him penalized and disqualified. He was in the sparring competition, fighting an old friend from his previous dojang. They are both very good (I've been on the receiving end of butt-kickings from both of them) and the match was skewing only slightly toward my brother. On the final point, they sallied back and forth, and then he threw a reverse spinning hook kick (yeah, flashy but effective) which was spot on. However, instead of reacting as an untrained mook might on the street, his opponent stepped into it in anticipation of a takedown. My brother's foot hooked around and caught his opponent in the back. The judges (two of whom have cause to seriously dislike my brother who is, for all his skill, sometimes cocky) decided that this was an illegal strike, and he was disqualified for it. Further proof, as if we needed it, that the judges can sometimes be wrong or can misjudge things since they are not always in immediate proximity to the action.

For MMA ... sparring is not a competitive part ... more in the sense of a training exercise ... we use sparring to get ready for the fight ... genarally we make sure it is controlled ... meaning reduce power, not throwing elbos or knees to certain locations ... this is done primarily for safety ...

I believe In full contact sparring, full head gear and shin guards and full power and ill intent. your both still friends after and you learn from putting yourself in the danger it also gets you use to what real competitive scene is like. when i was In TKD I gave less about points and more on knocking my opponents head off which is legal and a viable way to win xP

given alot of my tournaments have had different rule settings and what not i have a wonderful record of penalties. not so much my fault though. one of those i felt should not have been pinned on me though but should have been pinned on my opponent. it was a tough match and he kept doing these jumping spin kicks for awile i was avoiding them but when i got pushed to the edge of the arena i moved in on him and cought his legg in a cross block and thrusted up to keep his foot from coming down on me and the force threw him down onto the floor. given some of the judges were leaned more on his side in the favorite bunch they penalized me for "Inappropriate aggressiveness" <---whatever the hell that is i could say this much though alot of people were unhappy about that call. but it did not stop there once again he did another one and i repeated the same thing to punish him they made the call again. then he changed up his game and started doing various other techniques each one i kept reversing on him and striking him. the judges called break on us and when i turned around to go back to my spot my opponent came after me and attempted to grab me. i defended myself and threw him over my shoulder and joint locked him to calm him down. the judges decided to disqualify me and that set off a fuse on alot of masters and even the grand master who hosted the tournament even though yes i was disqualified from that match the grandmaster rewarded me with his apologies for having morons for judges and invited me to the masters dinner after the tournament.
