xxxxxWelcome to Ҁ a l y p s o Ș u n d o w n ! xxxxx

Calypso Sundown is a ranch- but there's a twist. This is a famous ranch, and by famous, I mean the participants are famous. Does Seabiscuit ring a bell? Dreamer? Flicka? Black Beauty? The Black Stallion? Ah, yes. Famous horse movies. Remember older ones? Like National Velvet? What about action? Like Hidalgo? We all admire these characters. The heros of their stories. Their own legends. We all enjoy these movies, but have you ever wondered what it would be like to be in the character's place? Feel what they felt? Make the story your own? Guess what. You can have these characters, you can be these characters.

These people are coming together on one ranch, called Calypso Sundown. They are here for counesling and peace from the outer world, knowing no one. The only people they know are their horses, and they are sent to this ranch for a reason unbeknowst to them. The characters think that they were sent for couseling- but nooo. They are all competing unknowingly for a position at the prestigous Gold Medal Ridge, an Olympic ranked ranch. This stable has it all- arenas, jumping courses, lush pastures, roomy stalls, a heated barn and tack room, and three heated indoor arenas. It trains all disciplines- Western, English, and even driving. There are three gold medal winners training at the stable, willing to work with the newcomers. The stable has won many honors awards for it's heaviness in competition, and it's vigilance in it's training. No wonder they're competing for it!

The ranch is located in Oklahoma, on the border between Oklahoma and Texas in a small town. The ranch is three miles out of town, and the ranch is easily 10 miles square, with 300 acres of pastureland and grazing land. There are very few fences, but most horses are let to roam the land, monitored by daily riders. The hands go out on either their horses or the ranch trucks, two Dodge Ram 3500 pickups, in the ranch colors, dark orange and gold. One is a deep gold, the other a neon orange. The colors are easy to see in case anything happens, so others can see the truck. There is a large ranch house near the barns, and the ranch house includes twenty rooms, each equipped with two shelving units, a large dresser chest, and a queen sized bed. There is also a nightstand and a desk in each room, and participants are encouraged to bring their cellular phones or laptops, but the electronics time is limited to one hour a day, and that's in the evening.

There are two barns, with at least twenty heated stalls in each. There are two very large outdoor rings, and one 400 by 500 indoor arena. The feed room has almost all grains imaginable and the hay shed has timothy, pasture grass, and alfalfa grass hay in the shed. The grain room has a large whiteboard providing the rations and conversions of the measurements. There is also a cooler where the medications are held, and there's also different color coded buckets for each of the horses. The tack room is very large, with a few seats and an artificial straw bale as the table. The rest os the large room is designated for tack, and each participant is expected to bring their own tack. The ranch has provided racks and nameplates, but each participant is to clean and take care of their tack. Each station has a chest for grooming supplies and medical supplies, and there are two saddle racks- each participant is pushed to try both English and Western disciplines. There is also a refrigerator in the corner where sodas, carrots, apples, and varying snacks are held. There is a bathroom in the corner, and there is a coat rack near the door.

The family, the McLaughlins, run the ranch, and there are daily chores and riding to be done. Every participant is responsible for his or her own horse, chores, feeding, riding, cleaning tack, everything. The horses need to be worked every day for at least an hour, and there is a log where the owners keep track. This log is mailed into Gold Medal Ridge, showing the amount of dedication in the riders. Each rider is scheduled to ride out on a herd check with the hands, checking on the herd when they're grazing. It's a big responsibiilty, but hey- it's a huge opportunity!

Keep your eyes bright and your chin up, and stay alert. You never know when the McLaughlins are watching! Make sure you're getting your chores done and logging your riding! Keep your heels down and your back straight. Keep up the good work, and good luck to all!

We share one dream and there ain't anyone that can stop us

╔══════════════════════╗

Stevie Rae was in the back seat of her car, her head leaning against her hand as she looked out the window. Her father was driving and listening to some of his so called, old school tunes. She had her headphones in and flipped through her list as she picked one of her Taylor Swift songs. They were on their way to the Calypso Ranch to meet her brand new horse, Pumpkin. She couldn't wait to meet him. She was literally bouncing off the walls when she woke up this morning. She was feeling nothing but excitement as they drove down the long road. They were practically only a few minutes away from the ranch and she was only a few minutes from exploding in joy.

Even though her parents have been having a bunch of financial issues, they were able to buy her everything she might need for her new life of horse riding. And her best friend had let her borrow a few things as well. She was going to miss her old home and her best friend, but sacrifices had to be made. She rolled down her window and slipped off the blue hoodie she was wearing so she could cool off. She was wearing a simple white tanktop and her favorite pair of ripped jeans. She had straightened her hair so she could look her best when she met the owners of the ranch. She was a bit nervous about that part. She was always such a shy person when it came to first meetings and such.

She leaned her head out the window just a bit as she saw Calypso Ranch right in front of her. She shrieked in excitement which made her parents laugh. She sat back down and tried to keep herself calm. She looked down at her wrist as she saw the silver charm bracelet that was there. Her best friend had given her a horse charm as another little trinket for good luck. She found the horse charm and twirled it in her fingers as she smiled brightly. I'm going to miss you dear friend. Thanks for the luck. she thought to herself as she wiped away a stray tear and waited for her parents to stop the car.

╔═══════════════ ═══╗

A fiery redhead stood by the fence, blindingly white rails enclosing the horses' pastures. The girl wore a "Cowgirl" tanktop and torn jeans, and worn and scuffed Ariat cowboy boots. She had a wheat colored cowboy hat on, but the flame of her gorgeous red hair shone beneath the hat. The girl was tall, strong, and slender. Her muscles were nicely toned, but she was definitely NOT one to be tussled with. She had a scar on her left arm from when she had been taming her mustang, Spirit, and he'd bitten her, and drew blood- a fair amount of it. But she'd come to be proud of it now- it showed her work.

The eighteen year old girl, Lani, basically ran the ranch. She knew a brief amount about the participants that were coming, and she already had some of their horses that had come out here early. She expected respect from the participants and expected hard work; she hadn't put it all together to watch it fall apart. She had Pumpkin- a girl named Stevie Rae's horse- in a seperate pasture, to make every horse easy to catch. She watched silently as her mustang stallion and his mate, Rain, played in the pasture, and she smiled. She didn't trust anyone else to ride him but her, because he had been hard to tame and ride in the first place. But now he was a great horse.

The teenager turned, hearing a car roll up the drive. She looked around the large ranch house, that was designed to house many people. Her gaze traveled to the two large barns, and the indoor and outdoor arenas. Since it snowed out there, Lani had pressed her parents to build an indoor ring, and they finally agreed. Her parents let her run the ranch, but her dad did the heavy hauling, like hay and such, her mother cooked and figured the expenses, and her brother was like a ranch hand. They had grown to respect Lani, and she'd earned it.

Lani took a step forward, her old boots crunching on the gravel. She began to jog across the manicured lawn and dodged the pine trees, which her mother insisted they keep trimmed. Lani rolled her piercing emerald eyes, and kept jogging down the drive until she met the car. She pointed up the drive, directing the driver to park up near the house. She backed off and let them through, smiling brightly. But no one should be fooled by her bright smile- she was not an easy keeper. She was very warmhearted and generous, but when it came to lessons it was crunch time all the time. Gold Medal Ridge- the stable she trained for- had made sure she didn't take any nonsense when it came to the riders that she trained. And so, she expected the best from the Sundowners- her pet name for the participants.

Lani waved as one of the hands came rolling up in an orange Dodge truck, and he rolled down the window, shooting Lani a sly smile. Lani grinned and leaned through the window, checking in the back of the truck. "I got the stuff you needed. Grain, hay, new leadropes, new tack, buckets," the hand rattled, listing all Lani's items. She nodded approvingly, then pointed down towards the first barn. "You know where they go! Have Dad help you if you need anything," Lani directed, and the hand nodded and rolled away, leaving his window down.

Lani turned back towards the cream colored house, where she had directed the driver of the van. She started for it, pulling her hat down over her eyes to block the sun. She looked at the house and it's many windows, meaning many rooms. It had a cozy feel to it, and it was decorated with potted plants and lasso style ropes, along with a Texas star here and there. After all, they were on the border of Texas!

Stevie Rae shrieked again as her dad parked the care where the girl had directed them too. As soon as the car stopped, she hopped out and took a look at the ranch house. It seemed cozy and like it had a lot of rooms. She liked the way it looked though. It felt like home even though she knew it wasn't. She pulled out her cellphone and took a quick picture of it to send to her friend later. She slipped the phone into her back pocket before she turned to see the girl heading down towards them.

She smiled brightly as she rushed her parents to get out of the car. She wanted to make a good first impression and she knew how embarassing her parents could be. She just hoped they'd be on their best behavior today. She looked around and saw all the different rings and places around here. Everything looked amazing, and she wondered if this was all a dream. She pinched herself to make sure she was clearly awake. She just couldn't believe she actually had her own horse now and she knew it would take her a while to get used to everything.

Her best friend had taught her about as much as she knew about horse riding and showing. She even gave her a few good luck charms just in case. Her best friend was always so superstitious. Though she loved her best friend just the way she was. Especially since she was always there to help her out. She shook off the thoughts of her friend and her old home since she was begining to feel a little homesick.

The teen redhead smiled brightly at the new girl, then pulled her hat off, revealing fiery flame colored hair. Her emerald eyes looked the girl up and down as Lani seemed to analyze how the girl would hold up. She looked sturdy, yet sensitive; hard-working yet caring. She smiled, nodding her head. "Lani McLaughlin. I pretty much run the place," Lani greeted, and smiled. She smiled sweetly at the parents, then signaled for them to follow her as she started the rundown.

Lani held the door open to the house, revealing a cozy kitchen and dining area. The table was large and had a lasso and horse tabecloth draped across it, with a bowl of apples and different fruits in it, sitting on a light brown tablerunner. "This is the dining room. You'll be eating brakfast and dinner here, and lunch will be out in the barn, usually. It's a pretty loose schedule, but you're expected to do your morning chores early, and your evening chores before dinner. Breakfast is at eight, and dinner's at six. The phone's over there if you need it," Lani explained, then pointed to a cordless AT&T phone sitting in it's holder, charging. Next to it was a wooden holder with pens, pencils, highlighters, and stationary in it, all sitting on a light birch half wall. Lani smiled, then continued into the living room.

The living room was a spacious family area, with two beige sectional couches surrounding a fairly large coffe table, the same shade as the couches with a beige table runner and a small pot of white daisies. Across from the couches was a large entertainment unit, with a large LCD flatscreen TV and many, many movies, mostly horse orientated. There were three large bookshelves in the back, filled with a mixture of fiction, training manuals, and your genuine truck fix it manuals that Lani's dad kept in there. The rug was a brown deerskin, and mustangs line the tops of the walls. There were paintings of mustangs and horses everywhere, giving it a cozy ranch feeling. "This is the family room. We have Dish, so we have a ton of channels. The TV is only open for when you're done with your chores and your riding, so it's really rarely used. We have movies on every Friday night," Lani added with a wink, then started up the elegant light pine stairs.

Upstairs, doors lined the hall. There were pictures of the family and paintings lining the walls, and all the doors were open except the three nearest to the stairs. The one to the left was Lani's, the right her brother's, and at the end of the hall her parents' room. There were also two on the other end where the hands stayed. Lani smiled at the girl, and pushed open one of the doors. "Pick whichever room you want. They're all pretty much the same size; it just depends on what view you want!" Lani added jokingly, and she stepped back so the girl could drop her stuff in her room, and they could continue the tour of the ranch.

╔══════════════════════╗

Stevie Rae smiled brightly at Lani and she couldn't stop smiling as she began to give them a tour. She was amazed by the TV and the stack of movies. Even if she knew she'd rarely get to use it. She thought the dining room was exquisite and it had a little cozy feeling to it. She was actually surprised by how much this place felt like home to her. And the girl seemed so nice. It was a shock to Stevie when she found out that this girl practically ran the place! She took quick glances at every painting and memorized every detail. Taking pictures with her cellphone ever now and then. She looked around at how many rooms there were and smiled shyly at Lani when she told her she could pick any one she wanted. "This is a really lovely place. It's so awesome!" she said in her Okie accent and giggled.

Sometimes she hated her Okie accent, but she was slowly begining to love it. She looked around at all the open doors and she grabbed her things from her mom and dad. She walked down the hallway, peering into each room to see which one she liked best. She finally found one that seemed perfect and she set her things down. She slowly moved in a circle so she could get a good view of her room. I love it here already! she thought to herself as she bit her lip to hold back her laughter. She then ran back out to her parents and Lani. "Oh! I completely forgot! Um, my name's Stevie Rae. And pardon the accent." she added on with an apologetic smile.

She then felt stupid for saying that, but knew it was already said and done. She motioned for her to continued on with the tour. She really hoped that she'd fit in here when the others came. She would hate it if she made any enemies. Especially since they'd be living together. She knew that when she began to show Pumpkin in different competitions, that she would make a few rivals. But Stevie liked to ride for the fun of it. Not for the trophies, fame, and glory. It was good to win, that she would admit. It just wasn't all she wanted. She just liked the thrill of completing a jump or learning something new and mastering it. She could tell it would be hard work since she used to help her friend take care of her horses all the time. And it wasn't as simple and easy as it looked.

Stevie was determined though and she knew that if she just worked hard enough, she might actually be good enough. Her determination and persistance were the only two things that kept her from backing down from any challenge. Yet her stubbornness could be part of that as well. All she knew was that there was no way anything could make her give up. Whether it be some petty jealous girl trying to ruin her, or being unable to master a new skill. She'd never let anyone or anything get in her way.

The redheaded ranch girl smiled, and nodded. "Nice to meet ya, Stevie Rae. No worries about te accent, I've got it here too," Lani answered, her emerald eyes glittering. She pushed her fiery hair over her shoulder, then pointed down the hall, gesturing to the right. "The bathroom's down the hall and to the right. There's two downstairs and two upstairs, so four people can be showering or whatnot at the same time. Anywhoo, I'm going to give a full on tour once all the Sundowners get here, and we'll have our meeting down at the stable." Lani gestured down the stairs, signaling over her shoulder. "Follow me; I'll show you where you need to be next."

Lani started down the creamish beige carpeted stairs, sliding her hand down the oaken banister. She stepped off the final stair onto a cowprint and horseshoe rug, weaving her way around the sectional couches, and finally through the halfwall of the kitchen. She grabbed a couple apples and tucked them into her hat, then turned and gestured toward the counter and fruit bowl. "You're welcome to any of the foor we have here. We feed you plenty well, no worries. Mom does most of the cooking, and she buys in bulk. So when she makes it to the city, we all pitch in to unload. You can grab anything you want," Lani explained with a wink. She smiled again, leaning against a barstool.

"So. What style of riding do you do? What do you want to learn while you're here? Any plans?" Lani asked with a genuine Southern smile. Her cheekbones were laced with freckles, and her eyebrows were only a shade darker than her hair. Her red locks fell down by her shoulders, swaying down by her back as well. She was tall and slender, her body perfectly curved, yet her muscles toned. She always wore her Ariats and Wrangler jeans, no matter the occasion. That's just who Lani was.

The moon on the mountain
The whisper through the trees
The waves on the water
Let nothing come between this and me

Stevie Rae followed Lani as she gave a quick little tour of the house. She shook her head when Lani said she could grab anything she wanted. She wasn't hungry or thirsty at the moment. Just excited to meet the others. She sat down beside Lani and crossed one leg over the other before giving her a bright smile. "Well, I ride Western. And the only thing I want to learn right now is the basics. But eventually I want to learn everything there is to know!"' she said as she laughed joyously. She shook her head before letting her straightened natural blonde hair fall in her face. She gently tucked the hair behind her ear so it wasn't in her way as she talked. "I guess you can tell I'm really excited. I truly just want to bond with my horse and take small steps at a time until we're the best. I just have to keep myself hopeful, determined, and as patient as I possibly can. Which my mom says is hard for me to do since I tend to be stubborn." she said as she glanced at her mom who was trying to hide her laughter.

She rolled her eyes before she straightened out her white tanktop. Her fingers fiddled with one of the holes on her ripped jeans as she tried not to be so shy and nervous like she always was. To her, Lani was way prettier and probably a lot stronger than she was. Though Stevie knew she was sort of pretty. She was just incredibly self-concious which of course was not good if she was going to be around so many different new people. She just had to learn to not worry about what others think.

"What about you? What do you know about horse riding? I can tell you probably know a lot more than me. Hell, I'm pretty sure everyone knows a lot more than me." she said as she gave a faint laugh. She always had her moments of doubt, but she would always pick herself back up and remind herself of the story about the Little Train that Could. She bit her lip to hide her laughter as she replayed the story in her head. To be honest, it was one of her favorite stories when she was little.

Stevie Rae shook her head to erase those thoughts and tried to keep herself focus on the conversation. Her fingers tapped against her knee out of habit as she waited for Lani's answer. She thought Lani was nice and she knew she would get along with her. She also felt that if something went horribly wrong, Lani would be the first person she would tell. Then again, Stevie always had some problems with trusting people. Her best friend used to tell her that she trusted people way too easily. Though in Stevie's mind, everyone deserved to be trusted until they prove themselves untrustworthy. Everyone deserved to have a chance to prove themselves, right?
