I prefer the classics like the regency romance novels of Jane Austen and Jane Eyre and Wuthering Hights by the Bronte sisters. If I want an no-need-to-think escape I read Jill Mansell, her books are light-hearted and funny.

I can read about elves and magicians with no problem but find most romances hard to swallow. Yeah, it's weird, I know. The modern romances I like are all light reads and have a little mystery, history and/or humor thrown in. The ones I can think of now are MC Beaton's Hamish Macbeth series and Elizabeth Peters's Amelia Peabody series. I loved Gone With the Wind. Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice was a wonderful romance and funny in parts, too.

A lot of people don't know this, but Anne Rice wrote a romance/erotica series under the pen name A.N. Roquelaure. The first is The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty. It is beautifully written and pretty intense. The whole thing takes place in medieval Europe and Arabia, in a culture that exploits sex and BDSM in everyday life. It is a really interesting concept if you are open-minded. Definately worth reading.
1. The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty 2. Beauty's Punishment 3. Beauty's Release

I love Jane Austen novels Pride and Prejudice is my favorite of hers I adore Mr. Darcy. I love the part when Elizabeth is visiting Pemberly and she runs into Mr. Darcy. That is like the best part out of the whole novel.

I love the Celtan books by Robin D. Owens, HeartMate, Heart Thief, Heart Duel, Heart Choice, Heart Quest, Heart Dance, Heart Fate, Heart Change, and Heart Journey.
The Books take place on the Plaint of Celta 400 years after colonization, of families with Flair, or magic powers, after they left earth. In the books a different couple goes through struggles as the learn they are heartmates, or soul mates.

I sometimes pick up romance novels when I want something a bit lighter to read. Here are a few of my favorite authors in this category:
Betty Neels writes what she knows: Nearly all her stories are about a nurse and a doctor (who is often a consultant surgeon), paralleling her real-life romance. whee She was also very prolific; there are tons of these, and Harlequin is currently re-releasing them.
Emilie Loring also wrote a ton of books. Hers tend to focus on well-off Easterners of her time.
Rosamund Pilcher's books have great, believable characters and situations. My favorite is Winter Solstice, which is about renewal after hardship.
I mentioned Elizabeth Peters' Amelia Peabody books in the Mysteries thread, but they fit well here, too. They are fun and engaging reads which will teach you about early Egyptology along the way.

I stumbled upon supernatural romance novels with Karen Marie Moning's Fever series. I thought it was just urban fantasy, but it has a really great, fast paced story and an amazing twist of an ending. I highly recommend it. heart
Has anyone read any Sherrylin Kenyon books? I keep seeing books in the Dark Hunter series in the bookstore...that series seems to go on forever, and I was trying to decide if it was worth getting into. I've read mixed reviews so far.

I have not read any of that series myself, but my trick when wanting to test-drive an author is to go to my local library and check out the first couple books.

Does anyone know any good yuri (non-pornographic) romance books, preferably of the sci-fi fantasy setting?

I am a big fan of Kenyons Dark Hunters and the books that spin off from it. I also love Christine Feehan's books her ghost walkerseries is huge and her sea haven series is what I am rereading right now. I have a book shelf dedicated to supernatural romance so if you don't like those two I have lots of other authors I can recommend.
