Dangerous Shapeshifter

Ok, this is the rough draft of my college essay, i already made the final draft, as soon as I find it I'll post that up here too. But I want to have all of your opinions on this so far.

Dreams. Many people have them, a goal they wish to reach. Some dream of becoming famous, some have dreams of being rich. What’s my dream? That’s an easy answer. My dream is to one day become a successful author. For as long as I can remember, that’s been the only goal that I’ve ever strived for. I want to make stories people will love as a living. Writing fiction is something that I enjoy doing and I’d love to do that as a career.

I’ve already started on the path to becoming an author by already starting to write novels. In fact, I’m currently working on several at once. Writer’s block is something I experience quite frequently, so this way if I get stuck on one book I can switch to another until I come up with a way around it. Whenever I have spare time I work on my stories and sometimes I end up writing late into the night. None of my books are finished as of yet, but this is mainly because I’m constantly revising and rewriting them. The genre’s I work with are mostly fantasy and supernatural, because these types of stories interest me the most. If I ever finish working on my novels and get them published, hopefully they’ll reach out to the people who share my interests.

I’ve always enjoyed writing stories and I’m fairly good at it. Though at the risk of tooting my own horn, I’ll admit that I still have much to learn. I first started writing in second grade. One of my teachers had asked the class to write our own stories. The ones I wrote, though they were only one or two pages long, were extremely imaginative. I decided to become an author because of that experience and I’ve worked enthusiastically on writing actual books ever since. I even started an independent class on creative writing in my senior year of high school in order to help me improve my abilities and unique writing style.

My determination to be a professional fiction writer has also been enforced by other authors. Stephen King was the first of many that lit the fire in me to carry out my dream. Then there’s Christopher Paolini, the author of the Inheritance Saga, who had finished his first novel before he even started college. He was the author that made me begin to work on my stories before I leave school and join the college crowd. But it was Barb and J.C. Hendee, coauthors of the Noble Dead series, that clinched my decision to work with fantasy and supernatural genres. The subjects that my favorite authors write will often give me some ideas on what I want to include in my own books. In fact, I often review those author’s books in order to help me learn ways to develop characters and plots.

If I manage to become a successful author, it’ll be a dream come true. I want to be just like the authors that I admire. To be likened to them and other great fiction writers is what I’m aiming for. Finishing my stories will bring me one step closer to achieving that goal, especially if they get published and become best sellers. Even if my books don’t become best sellers, just having them complete would make me to believe that I finally achieved my dream.

Here's the final draft of the essay. I'd really appreciate comments and criticisms on it.

Author’s Dream

Dreams. Many people have them, a goal they wish to reach. Some dream of becoming famous, some have dreams of being rich. What’s my dream? That’s easy to answer. My dream is to one day become a successful author. I want to make stories people will love. For as long as I can remember it’s been the only thing I’ve strived for. Writing fiction is something that I enjoy, so shouldn’t I do something I love as a career?

The path to becoming an author is sure to be a long and hard one, so I’ve made sure to get a head start. In order to do that I’m already writing several books. Not only is this a way to get me closer to achieving my dream, working on multiple books also helps me combat writer’s block. If I become stuck on one story I simply move on to the next. So far none of them are complete because I’m constantly editing and revising them. I write about all kinds of things, but what really gets me going is when I’m writing books on fantasy and the supernatural. When I have spare time I can usually be found sitting down somewhere typing away on my laptop, even if that means I have to stay up all night doing it.
At the risk of tooting my own horn, I’m pretty good with my work and I have been for quite some time. My passion with writing started in second grade when a teacher had my class create our own little stories. That single, seemingly insignificant, experience has stuck with me to this very day. I work hard on my writing every day, even going so far as to make an independent class for the sole purpose of improving my unique style. I will admit I have a lot to learn. My books are still in the works, and planning how the entire story will play out isn’t one of my strong suits. Despite these shortcomings, the one place where my true skills appear is on paper.

In fact, I often review their books to learn ways to develop characters and plots. To say the least, my favorite authors are the people that drive me closer to my dream.

The road to being an author may be long, but I’ll keep at it until my dream is fulfilled. I’ve come a long way since I first started and every day brings me closer to my dream. Some people say that dreams can’t come true. I say that dreams can happen if someone tries hard enough. What do you say?
