Daedalus Fitch. Clever. Calculating. Kind?
Daedalus was born in Tralee, Ireland to as normal a family could be. Except his mother was an Chess champion and his father a police investigator. The boy was brought up homeschooled, gaining an uneven education from his mother that seemed to focus more on logical progress through life than it did on a thorough base of knowledge. Advanced math was basically ignored, geography glossed over, and Daedalus saw these shortcomings as a sleight. In his freetime he found himself expanding his studies, using allowances to buy textbooks rather than toys. When Daedalus was practically teaching himself he began to turn inwards, only coming out to play games with his mother or solve crimes with his father (Usually from the safety of the squad car). When he turned thirteen he met the spirit Pretender… although at the time he’d thought she was a Londoner with the unlikely name of Rio. They spent plenty of time together, began to learn each other’s rhythms. Rio was shy, and avoided people. It was after he’d fallen in love with her that he realized she wasn’t human. In fact, he was the only one who could see her. While others might’ve thought themselves crazy Daedalus accepted that it meant he had power and that Rio had lied. Daedalus challenged Rio to a series of logic challenges; the clever demon underestimated Daedalus and lost. After all was said and done Pretender revealed her identity and purpose, forging a bond with Daedalus. Since then they were introverts together, training alone, although Daedalus did not always understand why. Daedalus harbored feelings of affection and resentment for Pretender, even as she walks beside him with impish delight for the fact. The girl Rio had a profound effect on Daedalus, he began once more listening to his heart, keeping it warm so that it didn’t freeze under Pretender’s cruelty. Daedalus was not surprised when the Shaman Academy summoned him and, despite—and possibly because of—Pretender’s arguments, he decided to attend. If nothing else to learn who might be trying to kill him sooner or later.
