Okay. "7 Deadly Sins"
We all know them, yeah?

Pride
Greed
Envy
Anger
Lust
Gluttony
Sloth

What i'm curious about is why does Christianity say these are the tickets to hell, when those 7 words seem to be the 7 most basic of human emotions?
People can't help feeling lazy (sloth) jealous (envy) horny (lust) or wanting everything they see in a shop (greed) even feeling good and boasting about certain acheivements (pride) or over eating (gluttony) And let's not forget those things that just piss you off..(anger).

It makes me wonder, what is a Christian's opinion of someone who is pure at heart? Is it an emotionless zombie? Someone who has perfect control over themselves and is only EVER happy or sad?

Also what's the deal with this Virgin Mary? They say an angel came down from heaven and declared her pregnant so she was.
I mean come on people. She had a ******** baby.
Why do they continue to refuse that their idol had sex?!
Why is sex so bad? Do they not know that they would not exist if it weren't for sex? I agree that a lot of people get carried away and abuse sex, but so what? We have laws to punish people for that. Why make it an overall law ruling out sex completely?

It seems Christians strive to disassociate themselves with being human. They seem to want to be some pure, divine beings...

It just pisses me off. They constantly try and deny raw human-ness.

I agree completely, I think the sex rules where a way to control people, either that or the person in charge was cheated on and became very bitter. The thing that gets me the most though, is how many of those are the Christian God guilty of. Certainly Pride and Anger at the least. damn hypo-chrystians.

Well...you have to admit, it's a pretty damn good excuse. "You're pregnant, and you're not married!" "No, no, it's okay! An angel did it, I'm still a virgin!" "Well...that's too crazy for us not to believe it!" Jesus was about 30 when he died, yes? So...wouldn't Mary have been stoned to death or had some equally terrible way of being killed? I mean...the people who put Jesus on the cross would have been around when Mary was pregnant, and they would have wanted to punish her for having a baby out of wedlock. It's a generation gap, not a generation lightyears away. Oh! Another thing! Why was it ok for MARY to have a baby out of wedlock, but not for anyone else...the woman who basically started Christianity is allowed to, but we're not....the whole Christianity thing...full of damned hypocrites!

Technically she was married, so it wasn't out of wedlock, she just wasn't married to the baby daddy

The fact that adam came to earth from god and eve came from his rib and they had a child out of love and she one day she took a bite out of the apple of knolage and killed him. Ok, I'm about to get into goddess worship. i'll start a thing thats a digusion.

Yeah, Knowledge. Something my friend has been telling me quite a lot lately. I'm not sure I understand 100% what he was saying, but I did get that he said Adam and Eve were kicked out because they ate an apple of knowledge, and soon learned good from bad and weren't supposed to know. So god hated them then because he didn't want them to be able to choose their own paths...

Also with that Pride would go Jealousy and Gluttony. Perhaps even Sloth.

He gets jealous if anyone worhships a certain idol other than him, yet he doesn't want to be idolised. I guess he hates Catholics as they have Mary as an idol, yeah? Also Sloth, he must be lazy or simply not quite fast enough to keep up with the chaos in the world. It must be like playing the Sims with a billion characters. You'd lose control of most of them. And Gluttony, he wants everyone for himself and if you don't want to follow him then "Well, screw you human, you can go to hell!"

Actually the only thing that most Catholics believe will definitely send you to hell is not believing in Jesus/God. The sins are not just minor things. (I am not Catholic, but I was raised that way and forced to sit through plenty of religion classes and masses.)

Sloth - Being so content with your own faults that you do absolutely nothing to change them and don't even care or feel bad about it. Basically being dead to the world, apathetic.

Pride - Obsession with the self, that other people are not worth your time because they're not as perfect as you.

Lust - Not just sex, it means craving as much pleasure as possible and not worrying about consequences, basically having no self restraint.

Gluttony - It is like lust, but instead of just craving it is the actual indulgence of as many pleasures as possible, material and abstract things like requiring other people to entertain you constantly.

Wrath - Anger, impatience, wanting to hurt others, I think most can see this as being fairly appropriate for a secular life..no one wants to be hurt so don't do it to others.

Envy - Basically wanting what others have and convincing yourself that the people did not deserve it, that it should be yours because you're a better person in your mind.

Greed - Never sharing with others, not just money but it means you can never give credit where it's due or let anyone else be in the spotlight.

The point of these is that if you let your life be controlled by what others have, let your urges dictate what you do, you will never be happy. They are not about God being disappointed in you, they're about how to live a benign, happy and fulfilling life. These often come across as being harsh because the old teachings were commonly used to instill fear, and that is a shame because they should just be encouragement to be happy with yourself and others. Like I said, I'm not Catholic, I'm agnostic and I still think these are things that one should try to avoid or keep in control of. They make perfect sense with a secular point of view.

Thanks for shedding some light on it, Usagi. But still, they seem to all be extremes. It makes me wonder why christianity and catholicism can't stay in the rational 'playing field.'

Hoho, I think that they want people to be at an emotional balance... But it truly is bad to supress your emotions in that manner... >.>

But it seems they want a balance of happiness, charity and love. They seem to want to block out everything else.

They don't want to because that is for humans, they try to be like Jesus/God/Holy Spirit who are divine. They hope that by living as morally right as possible that they'll be able to please God and go to heaven. They tend to forget not to judge and look down on others who do not adhere to their guidelines.
