When you enter the classroom, you note that it is both well-aged and well-kept. There is wood paneling on the walls and the lighting is warm, but plenty bright enough to illuminate the hardwood desks. Mrs. Eagle Owl, the teacher for this class, placidly blinks her large, round eyes at you from across her great desk, and smiles serenely as everyone takes their places. Moments later, class begins:

Quote:
The children will be split into pair for this class, and each pair will be given a poem or piece of prose to discuss. Each student is to write down their own feelings and thoughts on the poem, and then discuss with one another. Together, they must write down what they feel the piece is trying to convey and hand it in to the teacher before the end of class.

Passing by your pair, the teacher hands your children a slip of paper with the poem There is Another Sky by Emily Dickinson.

Firefly wasn't a fan of school. First of all, there were always so many kids, kids that usually smelled like Play Doh or B.O. or bacon. Socializing was overrated. Then there was the cramped classroom. Ref preferred reading about molecules and dinosaurs in the comfort of her treehouse during a light drizzle. Lastly, there was this. English.

The bug girl made a face as Mrs. Owl shuffled past. She eyed the piece of paper the poem was printed on as if it had cooties, then shifted her begoggled gaze to her partner. "Hello, I'm Firefly," she said. "I'll read this now, I guess."

Panda didn't particularly dislike school, he just disliked having to move from place to place. English class was one of his favorites, then, because it involved mostly sitting on your rump and reading things - he was good at that. The interpretation parts was where he got a little hazy on how much he liked the subject, however. Some things were just weird.

"Oh, um, hi. Yeah." he blinked over at the goggle wearing girl seated next to him. He should probably introduce himself to her, right? "I'm Panda."

Looking around nervously, the boy decided to ask another question, "Can I read it when you're done?" Well of course he could. What a dumb question that'd been, he thought, looking at his nose for a second to scold his own mind for his stupidity. He had to read that paper - he wouldn't be able to do the assignment otherwise. What a silly thing to ask of her!

Firefly, by now deeply engrossed in the short poem, failed to answer her partner for at least two minutes. Instead, she stuck the end of her pen between her teeth and muttered to herself, jotting down a couple of furious notes before looking up at Panda again.

"Uh huh," she confirmed, sliding the piece of paper over to the furry boy. She smiled. It somehow didn't reach her eyes, which were thankfully still hidden, although her intent was sincere enough.

She waited until he had finished reading before tapping a stiff finger on the desk between them. "Waddya think?"

Panda made a wonky face at the paper and stared at it a bit blankly, having to almost reread several lines because they didn't make sense. "Um...I think she's like talkin about a really really nice garden or something? But in an alternate universe?" the heck did that mean?

"And she wants this Austin dude to visit her there. I guess he's her brother or somethin?" Panda was not exactly one who had contemplated places like heaven or the afterlife before, and he wasn't too good with metaphors, so he was just taking things at face value till another idea struck him. Or till someone else figured it out. Either way.
