Across the rivers of Lethe and Nepenthe, right on the shore of the river Styx lies and old wooden building. It's front is faded and badly in need of repair, but a warm light emerges from withing. Welcome to the Last Blood Cafe. The first stop on your journey to the underworld, this cafe and inn is run by a small ghost girl known as Okiku. There is only one way to and from this lodging. I hope you have saved two pennies for the ferryman...

Okiku Name: Okiku Age: appears to be eight years old Race: once human, now a ghost Description: A small girl with ghostly blue hair, dressed in the traditional white kimono of the dead, complete with ghost headband. Cause of Death: Okiku lived happily with her family in the small village of Akihana. It was a peaceful village of famers and merchants. One summer night, a raid of bandits came and burned the village to the ground. Okiku ran as her mother and father were shot down with arrows. She made it to the river, but was discovered hiding in the reeds. The bandits threw her down a well where she eventually drowned. All was quiet in the dusty building as Okiku sat on the bar counter top. She sighed and peered out the window anxiously. Business had been slow for the past several days, and there had been no sign of Charon, the ferryman. After a few minutes, she hopped down to start dusting the tables.

Name: Arannis Desrani Age: Not really known, somewhere between 1800 and 2000 years, but he looks only in his low twenties. Race: Celestial Description: (Courtesy of the Kami, herself.) Cause of Death (Bio): A conflict with his brother, Derahci, ended strangely, and Arannis found himself caught very much between life and death, oddly there on both sides of it. This is the more... dead half. A golden light appeared near the center of the Cafe, twisting, forming into the body of a humanoid figure, young, yet frail. The light slowly faded, revealing Arannis, gazing at his hands in curious wonder. "What is this... where have I come to?" He looked around, spotting Okiku.

Seeing the newcomer, Okiku jumped up in joy.
"A customer! Welcome! Welcome!"
She glided over to the young man and bowed as was the traditional custom.
"Welcome to the Last Blood Cafe! I'm Okiku!"

Arannis looked genuinely confused.
"The... the what? Are you meaning to tell me that I no longer live? How...? I see life as clearly as ever, and yet the contrary evidence stares me in the face..."

The young ghost circled curiously around the man.
"Really? Wow, that's odd. Everyone here is usually deceased."
She reached out a hand trying to poke him.
"Are you sure that you're still among the living?"

Arannis held up a hand, palm facing upwards, as an image of himself run through by several dozen purple crystal spikes, still gasping for breath, appeared above.
"Barely alive, but yes. It seems I have come apart from myself, somehow."

Okiku watched the image, amazed.
"Wow! How do you do that?!"
She floated up to get a better view.

Arannis, noticing Okiku's curiosity, did not dispel the image, however much he wanted to.
"Suffice to say that with my natural lifespan... or lack thereof, as the case may be... I have been given far ample time to create outward images of alternative beings to my own."

She looked back at the man, and smiled.
"I'm guessing that you weren't human, were you?"

Arannis closed his hand, the image vanishing.
"Not at all.... You say the souls of the dead come here once dead, yes?"

"Yes, that is usually the case. Oh, but I'm not the ferryman. Charon is the one that takes all the souls to their final resting place. I guess you could call this place the last stop along the way."

Arannis held his hand away from him, image after image of several people not too unlike himself forming in the room, life-sized, then fading into the next.
"Perhaps you have met some of these, then. These were once my neighbors. My friends, my fellow traveling companions, many of my family - though one in particular I will not bring up..."

Okiku watched the images and placed her hand to her head, thinking.
"Some of them seem familiar. Especially the shiny looking ones. There were a lot of them here about a millenia or two ago."

The images stopped appearing.
"I can understand why. These were the inhabitants of my fallen homeworld at the time of its destruction."
Arannis looked into Okiku's eyes, reading them as if psychic.
"I trust you have heard a great many things about Celestia during that time?"
