Episode discussion for Exile on Main Street. I know most of you will have already posted reviews in the Megathread, but this is here for your enjoyment.

It also means that you don't have to white anything out xp
PostPosted: Sat Sep 25, 2010 11:36 am

Already posted this, but I'm making use:

Wow! What to say about this episode? Well I watched it while I should have been packing so that says ONE thing about it anyway (more important that moving house!)

Character by character I think:

Dean: DOMESTIC!DEAN!!!! He makes me go all squishy inside! And it's great to see him with Ben too, he would make such an amazing father. It's nice to see that even though he's rusty, he cares. I get the feeling that he's kinda going to be in season 1!Sam's position much of this season. Out of the game and slowly working it out again. Hopefully without the tragedy though. Also, nice touch with Dean admitting that of course he couldn't leave Sam in the pit alone. Much more believable than him just getting on with his life.

Lisa: I have super love for this woman right now. She's so understanding of Dean and his past. I love that she just called him an idiot and that even with the mess that Dean was in when he arrived she still though that the last year had been the best of her life. She's very switched on, a good woman too and I think a great potential hunter's wife. Please, Gamble, don't let anything happen to her!

Ben: Didn't do much did he? But there wasn't much for him to do. Hopefully later...

Sam: Sam's different, really different. He's colder now for a start, less inclined towards HELPING people as he is towards making sure that the evil thing gets good and dead. I also think that it's a very thin facade. He's cooping, just about, and he's not talking about Hell, but I think it's a close thing. There's also something about him that I don't trust.

The Campbells: I don't trust a single one of them (and this has nothing to do with Corin "Jonas Quinn" Nemic). Grandpa is up to something fishy by taking the Djinn and the cousins are in on it. I also hated the way that they all picked at Dean's normal life. Dean got out! He got to have that chance and I think that's fantastic. Samuel's off, though, and the others are just mean.

Bobby: I could smack him, really, I'm not surprised that he didn't tell Dean about Sam, because he doesn't always do what's best for them even though he cares, but I'm disappointed in him for not. That's all I have to say.

YED: Dawwwww, I was really hoping that he was back for good. Really!

Impala: Poor baby, shoved under a tarp, Dean trying to give her away, Sam not wanting her! What the hell is wrong with Sam to not want her??? But yeah, the car is as much of a character and she deserved better.

That's me. Now I need previews of next week if someone can find them.

It's like Sam and Dean switched places.
Then:
Dean--Got back from hell, doesn't want to talk about it, barely coping. Also he is cold and not as compassionate, more eager to get the job done rather than help people.
Sam--He got out of the life, then dragged back in to protect his family. He's the sensitive one, that worries about helping people.

Well, I wrote a LOT on this episode in the Megathread, but I figured, mine as well post it here too just to help get this subforum kick-started!

YED: I'm both sad and happy he was a hallucination. I'm sad because he's a great villain and I always want to see more of him, but I'm happy because, well, quite frankly, there really was no way I could think of to legitimately bring him back into the series.

Lisa: Have I mentioned that I love Lisa? This episode made me like her even more. That moment at Bobby's where Lisa's just like, "Dean, you're an idiot." was fantastic. She loves him, she's proud of him, and she's not an idiot and realizes that he's going to have issues he has to work through. But that shouldn't stop them from being a family. Also, I get the feeling she'll be ok with Dean going off to hunt and do his thing. When she caught him with the gun in the garage, she wasn't pissed at him for hunting. She was just concerned about him. See? Perfect hunter's wife right there. Who knows? Maybe he'll even teach her a thing or two about hunting. She's like an Ellen in the making!

Ben: Well, he didn't really do much this episode, did he? But still, the shot of him working on the truck with Dean was just adorable.

Cid: Ok, kind of glad that guy is dead. Not that I hated him or anything, but he was just too nosey to be around while Dean's getting back into hunting. Though I did find the scene where he catches Dean almost shooting the neighbor's yorkie to be hilarious. (also, was anyone else flashing back to Yellow Fever on that scene? Dean just does not like yorkies!)

Grandpa Campbell: Hmmm, so he was pulled down from heaven for some reason too. At first, I thought it might be the angels putting all the hunters back on earth because they didn't have time to deal with the crap that was going on down there, but it sounds like they're pretty sure the two Sams were the only ones brought back. Still, wouldn't it be great if Papa and Ma Winchester showed up at the end of the season and were like, "Hey, we're back too!" I mean, sure it would be a bit cheesy, but at least we'd get to see JDM again. ninja Anyway, back to Grandpa . . . (side note: how weird is it to hear Dean calling someone Grandpa?) He's got something planned. I don't know what, but he's keeping secrets, and that's never a good thing.

The other Campbells: I like the quiet guy. Don't have much to say about the formerly Jonas Quin from Stargate SG1 guy. And I do not like the woman. She's just mean and prickly. I mean, ok, I get that she's a hunter, but Ellen, Jo, Mary, and Deanna were not that bitchy and they made great hunters.

Bobby: He knew Sam was back too!!!! Yeah, ok, I did kind of expect that. The boys always go see Bobby when they get out of Hell. It's just the cool thing to do, I guess. At first I was mad at him for not telling Dean that Sam was back, but then I realized, you know, Bobby doesn't always do what's ACTUALLY best for the boys. Remember him wanting to let Sam go on drinking demon blood? I think he wants the boys to be safe more than he wants them to be good hunters, and whether he wants to admit it or not, Dean really was safer in suburbia, especially seeing as Sam and the fam were still looking out for him without his knowing.

Cas: Where are you Cas? Why aren't you answering Sam's prayers? Sad day.

the Impala: Poor baby, nobody wants her, she can't go out hunting, and she has that ugly tarp covering her all the time. I love you Impala, and I miss you. I thought the scene at the end with Dean offering Sam the car was both touching and heartbreaking. I mean, on the one hand, Dean is trying to mend the bond by giving Sam something he loves, but on the other hand, he's also trying to give away the last thing connecting him to hunting. Similarly, Sam's refusal of the car shows his affection for Dean and not wanting to take the car away from him, but it also shows the distance. He has moved on, is hunting in his own way, and doesn't want to go back to how things were before. So yeah. Touching and heartbreaking. Poor Impala. Nobody loves her right now. Hope that changes soon.

the Jinns (or however you spell it): Not positive how I felt about them at first, but the more I think about it, the more I like it. I was confused about their powers at first (because I was like, what? That's not a Jinn's M.O. they just catch people, make them have nice dreams, and eat them.), but I guess it makes sense that, if they can make you dream about good stuff, they can also make you dream about bad stuff. I also really liked their tattoos and how they could appear and disappear.

Sam: Oh boy. Sam. Where do I begin? First off, he is different. Very very different. He's much more . . . . . Dean like. He seems laid back and open, but all that is just a mask to cover everything he doesn't want to share with the world. And yet, as different as he is, I think they pulled it off well. He was in hell, he doesn't want to talk about it, and that's it. He's been out for a year hunting with, well, other hunters. And as much as he claims they're family, they're definitely not close. They're a group of hunters that feels a responsibility towards each other, and that seems to be about it. It makes sense that he's gotten harder and that he doesn't want to talk about those things. He hasn't had anyone close enough to talk about those things with for a year, so why would he open up about them now? I think it was well played and I'm interested to see what more we learn about Sam and where his story goes from here.

Dean: Oh Dean. What can I say? Honestly, I think that opening montage of scenes from Dean's old and new life says most of it. His life is the same in some ways, but also completely different. And yet, he can't completely let go of what has happened to him. Again, the character is very very different, but I think it works. He has spent a year trying to be normal and do normal things, and that has softened him up a bit. He's rusty and he's not making the tough decisions like he used to because he's attached to people now. And yet, he's still the same guy. When he heard that woman screaming, he went to help her, didn't even think twice about it. When he saw his friends in danger, again, he rushed in to save them. He's still willing to sacrifice himself and willing to go hunting and look into mysterious things. I think he'll fall back into hunting fairly easily, though as he said, he is still a bit rusty. I am glad he decided to stay with Lisa and Ben in the end, because they are still in danger. The monsters know where he has been, and if those who don't ever found out, Lisa and Ben would be dead. He has to protect them because he loves them and that's just Dean. Also, the story about how much trouble Dean went to to try to figure out how to bring Sam back was great. I knew he wouldn't just give up completely, and it would be impossible for him to ever leave that responsibility of looking out for Sammy completely in his past.

Additional things:

- I felt so bad for Dean when the hunters were walking around his house, looking at all the normal stuff and insulting him for it! It was like, hey! Lay off!

- The pictures of Lisa, Dean, and Ben were so cute. ^^

- No opening song for the recap? Sad day! But we did get a good song during the montage, so at least there's that.

- Pretty new spn opening! I love the shattered glass thing.

- Sara and Kripke were right about this season. It is feeling very much like a sequel. But it's feeling like a good sequel so far, so yay!

- I was in such a good mood when the episode ended that, when the tv said, "stay tuned for scenes from next week's all new Supernatural," I replied with a rather chipper, "OK!"

And . . . . I think that's it. . . . . I'll probably think of more stuff later, but for now that is it. ^.^

Haha! That is so true. I can see why Jared and Jensen said this season is so much harder to play. It's like they're playing each other's characters from past seasons, but with all the extra emotional baggage they've already accumulated.

Also:

The YED in Dean's head said that Cas was sugar!

As soon as I knew it was an hallucination my destiel fangirl brain went Oh REALLY??? Even Dean's subconscious recognises the hot that is Destiel!

Of course, the fangirl thought was "well, DUH! Of course he is!"

Also, nice touch with Dean admitting that of course he couldn't leave Sam in the pit alone. Much more believable than him just getting on with his life.

I really just loved that whole scene where he's complaining to Bobby about everything. It was so . . . . just true to Dean's character. He's pissed off that they let him go to Lisa and Ben and be a burden on him when he didn't have to, even though he does love being with them, and the reason he was such a burden was because he was so obsessed with what happened with Sam and trying to get him back.

artemisdesari
Lisa: I have super love for this woman right now. She's so understanding of Dean and his past. I love that she just called him an idiot and that even with the mess that Dean was in when he arrived she still though that the last year had been the best of her life. She's very switched on, a good woman too and I think a great potential hunter's wife. Please, Gamble, don't let anything happen to her!

Me too!!! Pretty much everything you said there. Ditto.
I think Lisa could become kind of an Ellen type character. Hunter's wife, learns to take care of herself, tough as nails, worried the whole time her husband is away, but totally willing to let him go out and save some lives.

artemisdesari
Sam: Sam's different, really different. He's colder now for a start, less inclined towards HELPING people as he is towards making sure that the evil thing gets good and dead. I also think that it's a very thin facade. He's cooping, just about, and he's not talking about Hell, but I think it's a close thing.

I really love what they did with Sam, and I think you're right about it all being a coping mechanism. I love the conversation he and Dean have in the end when Sam admits that he wouldn't even think about going to help those people anymore. He's very honest about it, and he doesn't seem completely comfortable with it either. His line, "It's just better with you around," makes me think that he wants to be like he used to be, to care about people like he used to, but doesn't think he's capable of that anymore. I'm really interested to see where Sam's story goes throughout the season.

artemisdesari

The Campbells: I don't trust a single one of them (and this has nothing to do with Corin "Jonas Quinn" Nemic). Grandpa is up to something fishy by taking the Djinn and the cousins are in on it. I also hated the way that they all picked at Dean's normal life. Dean got out! He got to have that chance and I think that's fantastic. Samuel's off, though, and the others are just mean.

Could not agree with you more on this one. Although, actually, I do like the something something twice removed Campbell, the one who doesn't say much. The reason might be because he doesn't say much, but somehow, he seems at least a bit more trustworthy than the other Campbells. Still pretty shady though.

artemisdesari

Impala: Poor baby, shoved under a tarp, Dean trying to give her away, Sam not wanting her! What the hell is wrong with Sam to not want her??? But yeah, the car is as much of a character and she deserved better.

She better be back next episode! That is the one regret that I had about this episode. Without the boys driving around in the Impala, it just doesn't feel like Supernatural. And I don't care if Sam has his car all pretty and just the way he likes it. The whole reason he was able to save the world was because of the Impala, and he needs to suck it up, let go of his OCD, and spend some time hunting with her and Dean.

artemisdesari

That's me. Now I need previews of next week if someone can find them.

Haha! I think that really was the Destiel fan in you coming up with that. I was just like, Oh yeah, makes sense. Cas is an angel, which is sweet and nice (in theory) and YED is a demon, which certainly adds a little bit of spice and excitement to your life.

My brain didn't even go anywhere near Destial. lol.

OOOOOOOKAY.....
Craziness aside, here's ratonal thinking:
~I wonder how Dean managed to get a job without any backround info... he prolly forged some stuff but still.....

~I don't understand why people bashed Lisa to death on twitter last night. I really like her. She's so understanding and patient with Dean, and she clearly loved him. I just don't get it. The fangirls need to realize Dean is never gonna get with them so STFU confused
Until she does something to piss me off, she's fine in my books.

~I HATE THE CAMPBELLS. I really do. Grandpa is alright, but the others... especially that little douche Harlod Lauder Christian and Gwen. Mark the silent one is alright, but I might dislike him once he opens his mouth confused

~ OMFG I LOVE SAM'S CAR, IT'S SEXY OH GAWD *fans self*WTF kinda car was that anyway? It looks like the one my father was seriously considering buying (and he NEVER buys new cars EVER) EDIT: Yep it's the one, the dodge charger, OH ******** SEXY CAR. I want it. I WANT IT MORE THAN THE SEXPALA. ....Is that bad? sweatdrop

Ok I can't concentrate after thinkiing about the charger LOL. Too bad it's gonna die in 2 episodes. Sadness. I'd say that and the Impala should make some epic car babies or something LMFAO.

-What the hell is wrong with you??-

sweatdrop That is the only new car other than the new mustang and challenger that I've ever wanted ..... sweatdrop Shut up.....

CONFETTI! ITS A PARADE! Cause spn is back biggrin

-REPOSTING-

Where to start..

1. So it was a hallucination, instead of a dream. Well, that makes sense, but I thought I'd heard that Fredric would be returning for more than one episode...

2. Sigh.. Even though I still think Dean/Cas is the OTP, I'm glad to see Dean happy. I still find it hard to see the transitions from "Gumby girl weekend stand" to "MILF that hated me for a few days until I saved her kid" to "hi, i'm on your doorstep to tell you I love you and i'm gonna go kill myself" to "Hi, i'm broken and my brother said to come here" to "best year of my life, I love you hon." neutral

3. I think Sam should have sent a card to Dean telling him he was alive and fine, but to stay with his new family. If Dean didn't know where to look and he wasn't grieving over Sam's death, he probably would have stayed where he was and been happier.

4. Djiinns that don't feed off blood and give their victims long peaceful fantasies? Hmmm.. And wth do the Campbells want with the left over Djiinn?? Shady... stare

5. I'm fairly surprised that Lisa isn't afraid that Dean's past is going to bite her in the a**. I'm sure it will, sometime after the first half of the season.

6. Ugh.. Creepy babies. Just how do they hope to get away with killing babies? Kripke himself said they'd always shied away from that because it was too horrible. This is the same episode where Dean is holding that little dark boy, right? So not all the babies are evil?

Overall, I thought that, though there were a lot of surprises bombshells for Dean, we knew all of them. This season premiere was a little bit dull compared to the others, i'd say. It was good, don't get me wrong, but I was waiting for an OMG moment that never came for me.

Also:

I hate the Campbells, too. I don't trust or like any of them and I feel like they're unnecessary. And really, where the hell were they during the END OF THE WORLD??

Also, Punky, Don't get too attached to Sam's new ride because Cas and Balty are gonna land on it in episode 3. twisted

YAY! *does a little dance*
I mean, don't get me wrong, it's a great car and I honestly do think it fits Sam (doubly so for the new Sam), but it's just not Supernatural without Sam and Dean riding around in the Impala. End of story.

OMFG I didn't even realize that! Wasn't it last year they had 'Thunderstruck' by ACDC? And now nothing?? Damn what the hell, the budget was that low? *wibble*
