The rattlesnake awkwardly dragged a large brown suitcase behind her towards what would be her new home. A home shared with someone still unknown. Her parents had recently dropped her off and wished their daughter good luck. If it was not for her stubborn pride they would have helped her with the luggage. However she wanted to manage the luggage on her own. It was not a tearful or dramatic goodbye since they all had agreed to stay in contact with each other frequently. Rattle understood that they wouldn't be gone forever.
Finding the building wasn't too hard. Their numbers were clearly posted. Once she reached the right building Rattle searched the bag she was wearing for an envelope her family had been sent from the school. It was filled with various fliers, maps, and a key. The key the campus had issued worked so this must be the right place. Once she was inside the snake inspected the space. All the rooms looked to be empty still. It seems she has arrived first. Rattle had been nervous about meeting her new room mate. She was terrified of being stuck with someone that would be needlessly cruel. If they didn't get along would they be stuck together the whole time? That would be a nightmare. Worrying about it would not help the situation. Rattle tried to focus on unpacking instead. Without putting much thought in comparing rooms she set the suitcase on one of the beds and began the task of unpacking. Clothing was taken out and carefully folded. Books were stacked on a nearby desk.

Firefly hopped in place in an attempt to stop her duffel bag from digging into her wing. She silently hoped she didn't look like bully bait. Her dorm was close, just two buildings away from the one she stood in front of, if they were arranged chronologically. But in which direction? Her left antenna flicked to the right and she looked off in the direction it pointed. "Okay Herbert," she muttered. It was a fifty-fifty chance either way.
She had thought to bring as little as possible with her, but that initially small amount had quickly expanded into more than Ref could comfortably carry. Still, the insect girl had insisted on bringing only one proper bag, so she was left with no choice but to lug everything that wasn't clothing in her arms. In addition to the duffel, she had her telescope and spyglass cases slung over a shoulder, and she dragged a black garbage bag full of books behind her. Forget bully bait, she probably looked homeless.
Thankfully, her mother had thought to thread Ref's key through a piece of string and tie it around her neck, so it was fairly accessible once she got to the door. She stepped inside and promptly dropped all of her things right inside the dorm. Someone was here. Ref kicked off her shoes and began checking out the house. When she rounded the corner and looked into the room Rattle had chosen, she stopped in her tracks. A snake! The firefly smiled faintly, her eyes lighting up with interest, but most of her expression was impossible to see behind her goggles. Ref raised a hand and waved shyly, waiting for the other girl to notice her.

Rattle nearly jumped out of her skin when she heard an out of place thud and clattering sound out in her new home. She looked around quickly and signed in relief. At least the source of the sound had not seen her react in such a startled manner. Being jumpy would too be a bad impression since that might inspire the other kid to try to purposely startle her in the future.
Thinking the intruder had to be this mysterious room mate thing Rattle returned to her unpacking. She was almost done and hopeful to finish so she could focus on trying to make a good impression. The firefly had reached the door in time to see the snake trying to balance a stack of books on her desk. After fussing over the books for a moment Rattle finally noticed that she had an audience. "Um.... Hi." She waved back hesitantly. It was hard to read the other kid due to those weird huge glasses she was wearing. Well she assumed it was a girl. It seemed like a bad idea to pair the opposing genders together.

"Books!" Ref said with a great deal more enthusiasm than she reserved for most people. She lifted a foot and hovered it out in front of her, over the threshold of Rattle's room, before thinking better of it and dropping it back to the ground. It was probably rude to wander into the room someone else had chosen for themselves, although she did it to her parents all the time. Better to stay put here in the hall until she was invited in or her new roommate came out. Like a vampire.
"What kinds do you like?" Ref asked, slightly bouncing on the balls of her feet but otherwise not moving at all. "Oh, and I'm Firefly, if you couldn't tell."
