Ever trudged down the street, which was alive with children playing in the last rays of sunlight, before darkness fell and they were forced to go inside. Parents were sitting on porches, watching their children frolic on front lawns. A few of them waved pleasantly to Ever as she passed by. She returned their greetings with a slight nod and continued through the intersection, which was empty of cars. She was on her way to meet her friends in an abandoned mansion where they were spending the night, on a dare. She and her friends had never turned down a dare, or an opportunity for a prank.

Ever turned up the drive that led to the old house. A tall wrought iron fence separated the estate from the peaceful neighborhood below. She put her hands on the bars of the gate. A thick padlock prevented the gate from opening. Her cell phone vibrated in her pocket. Ever pulled it out and looked at the text from her friend Sabrina.
Where r u? We r all here
Im comin She replied.
Ever slipped her phone back into her pocket and shook the gates.
“Come on” she groaned.
“I wouldn’t go in there if I were you. They say the place is haunted” A stern voice behind her stated.
Ever whirled around to face an old man in a long black coat.
“I don’t believe in ghosts” She replied coldly, looking into his extremely dark eyes. They were almost black.
“As you wish” The old man replied, looking disappointed. There was a click and a small thud behind Ever. She turned her head toward the noise. The padlock was now laying in the dirt.
“How did-” Ever turned again to face the old man, only to find that he was gone. She rolled her eyes, wondering how much her friends had paid him to try to scare her.

She pushed open the gates and stepped into a large garden, which was filled with overgrown stinging nettles. Ever was careful to avoid them as she walked confidently up the path to the front door. She reached for the large brass doorknob, only to be distracted by a shadow to her right. She turned to see the old man watching her.
“This is your last chance to turn back. I cannot follow you inside.”
“Oh good” Ever said, turning the knob “I’m going inside then”
The old man’s shoulders sagged as Ever opened the door and stepped inside a dim living room, stopping as she heard a crunch under her foot. She stepped back and picked up the broken pieces of a cell phone. The door slammed behind her. Ever squinted in the darkness and recognized it to be Sabrina’s.
“Guys” She called “I’m here. And I just killed Sabrina’s phone!"

He had known it was a bad idea- known it from the very beginning. That didn't stop him from doing it, and it didn't change where he was now. Nick sighed to himself, walking down the street. Out of breath, after the recent events- running from the cops took a lot out of a guy. He hadn't done anything too bad- hold up a convenient store. Made off with a few hundred bucks, and nobody even got hurt. But he hung out a bit too long, and managed to slip away. Probably not for long, though... And with that thought, he began looking around. Only things in sight were trees- except that old condemned building, and a little further away the suburbs. "Damn... Looks like the choice was made for me," he muttered, patting his pockets quickly. One held his gun, a .357 Colt. The other, a switchblade, his wallet, and phone. Just making sure everything was in place... He was going into a condemned building. Probably one of the most cliche things a runaway could do- so cliche, in fact, it was the last place the cops would look. He smirked to himself, walking up and testing the door knob. Unlocked- perfect. Just to make sure he was truly alone, he called out. "Hey!" One quick shout, to spook anyone else in here. If need be, he could sufficiently keep others quiet until the cops passed. Guns tended to be very persuading. He wouldn't shoot anyone, unless they did something stupid like attack him. But, it would be enough incentive for them to stay still and quiet, until the coast was clear. If there was anyone even here... Nick had a long history of being paranoid.

Ever heard a shout from outside and turned toward the door, expecting one of her friends. When the door didn’t open immediately, she tried the knob, which refused to turn.
“What the…” She trailed off, trying once more. The knob still refused to move. Ever frowned at it and gave up. She turned, and made her way through the dimly-lit living room and into a long hallway. “Guys!” she called, walking slowly, her shoes scuffing quietly against the worn carpet. “Guys c’mon.” Ever rolled her eyes at her friends. They were always trying to scare her. She sighed, already bored with their games. They would pop out to scare her soon enough, and Ever relished the thought; getting uncomfortable with the seclusion. She brushed her hair out of her face as she reached an old-fashioned kitchen. Relief washed over her as she spotted another door on the other side of the room. Ever swiftly crossed the floor and with the expectation of meeting her friends outside, she grasped the doorknob. She attempted to turn the knob, while pressing her shoulder against the door. No luck.

Mimeco stepped out of the car her father drove. She looked at the old building in the distance and tilted her head. She pulled her bag out of the car and waved good-bye to her father. She was was here to spend time with her grandmother, but for some odd reason she couldn't stop looking at the old run-down house. She headed for her grandmothers door and thats when she saw a dog sitting on the porch of the house. "Dog..." She started to back up. "Daddy! Daddy! Come back here!" She turned around and started off in the direction her father left in. "You didn't tell me grandmother had a dog!" She started to cry.
Mimeco stopped running right infront of the old house. "This isn't cool! Come back here!" She feel to her butt crying her eyes out. She stopped and looked back the dog had followed her. All she could think about was her dead mother and the scars on her legs.
Mimeco Got to her feet and ran to up to the old house. "Please let the door be unlock. Please!" She cryed out as she looked back. Slaming up against the door, she put her hand on the knob and started to turn it. "Its unlocked... thank the heavens." She pushed on the door just as the dog stopped before reaching the steps of the old building. Once in she slam the door shut and prop herself against it.

The door slamming made Nick jump- he turned around suddenly, resisting the urge to pull out his gun. "Jesus!" he muttered, sighing in relief when he saw it was just a girl. "You scared the s**t outta me," he muttered, clutching his chest and inhaling. "What the hell are you doin' in here, anyway?"

“Hello?” Ever called out, hearing the door slam. She walked back through the kitchen and, again, into the lengthy hallway. Turns out her friends had showed up after all. The thought almost brought a smile to her face. Ever opened a door to her right and, thinking it was the living room, stepped inside. Realizing it was a large coat closet, she sighed and headed back for the hall. When she got to the doorway, the large, oak door slammed shut in her face. She rolled her eyes. This was really getting old. “Guys, seriously” she whined through the door “Let me out.” She knocked on the wood with the palm of her hand a few times. “Fine. I can wait.” Ever snapped, getting irritated. She laid her forehead against the cool wood, prepared to wait. The door swung open with a creek, and Ever stumbled forward into the hall. “About time” she muttered. Ever walked swiftly down the hallway to found a guy and a girl standing in the living room. She narrowed her eyes. "Who are you?"

Mimeco was breathing heavy as she looked up at a guy. "What the..." She looked around and got to her feet. She was trimbling as she answered. "Just looking for a safe place." She didn't want to give to much because most she has told laughed at her. She started to calm herself down. She looked past the guy and saw a girl coming twards them. She stayed silent for a little bit after the girl asked a question. She fixed her hair and tried smiling. "My name is Mimeco." She said as she wondered why there were others in this old house. "And who are you?" She asked as looked around for her bag. "Wheres my bag?" She then realized she had dropped it outside infron of her grandmothers house. "Oh great. Its outside with that bloody dog." She wined.

I’m Ever. She replied, studying the flustered girl in front of her. “Dog?” Ever asked, almost inaudibly. She looked past them; at the door through which she came. “How did you guys get in here?” she asked, her eyes focusing once more on the pair. “And even more importantly, why are you in here?” She blew a stray hair away from her face impatiently and crossed her arms; clearly uncomfortable.

"I'm Nick... Here on some stupid dare. A couple of my friends think this place is haunted or some ridiculous crud... I've got fifty bucks waiting for me tomorrow when I go home." He put on a very convincing smirk- it wasn't that far from the truth. He did have fifty bucks waiting at home... But not for sleeping in this crappy house. His friends had bet him he couldn't rob the convenient store. He did, so now he had that money, plus fifty bucks when he got home. And an excuse to hide out in the perfect place- with these other people. What a lovely alibi.

Mimeco put her hand on her head and rubbed her timple. She took a deep breath to calm herself down. She looked at Nick as he spoke. She said. "A dog was chasing me and for some reason or another I ran in here to get away from it." She lied partly, but she really couldn't tell that she had a fear of dogs. More or less she was worried to say that. "And what about you Ever? Why are you in here?" She crossed her arms as she was cursing her father in her head.

“I’m here on a dare too.“ Ever replied, uncrossing her arms and looking up at the ceiling. She decided not to mention the fact that her friends were supposed to be joining her. It would just be embarrassing to admit to being stood up. She looked over at Nick. “You’re lucky.” she stated emotionlessly “I get to waste a night of my life here for nothing.” She rolled her eyes. “And so dogs hate you?” Ever asked Mimeco, attempting humor.

"Lucky isn't the word I would use," Nick replied, then smirked at the other girl... Mimeco, or whatever. "Nah... She's just terrified of them. It's all over her face... She probably freaked out and ran, and that poor dog thought she was playing a game. Then it got a face full of door." He chuckled, shaking his head.
