As you all may know. They have been banning books from schools and other places. What do you think of this? How many banned books have you read? Me I probaly read them all XD Are school hasn't banned any books. They think were grown up enough for them. (We are a high school)
I think the whole idea of banning books though is stupid because seriously if were not going to read it now will pry just end up reading it later.

I hate book banning. I know that some libraries ban Looking For Alaska. I'm not sure why, really. Maybe because there is smoking and sex? Anyone who's read that book knows that the sex is not explicit at all.

When I was in 9th grade, there were all these parents saying that I Know Why The Caged Bird sings was inappropriate for freshman. I don't know if they banned it though. I hope they didn't.

At my old school (it was a while ago), they banned the Harry Potter books because it apparently promoted paganistic beliefs or something of the sort.

I think it's just silly to ban most books. When I see the reasons some people use for banning books I want to ask them what rock they've been living under. People try banning books for language when I've heard way worse language used in a high school hallway on a daily basis. Hiding "unpleasant" things like sex/drugs/profanity from kids is not going to make them magically go away. They are going to encounter these things in life, and I think it would be much better to let them read a book with these things in them and explain it to them instead of trying to keep them in the dark. As for people who try to ban books because they hold opposing viewpoints, that's pretty ridiculous too. If your convictions are so weak that you think reading a work of fiction can shatter them, then I think you should be taking a second look at your own beliefs. If a set of children's books can turn your children away from the Lord, maybe they were never truly with him to begin with.

Oh, but I do love the delicious irony when people want to ban books like Fahrenheit 451.

It's all about sheltering, I guess. I agree with you Infinity Outlaw. I can't stand the fact that adults think they can keep kids from not hearing about sex and cussing. Most parents don't know that their kids are already having sex and they would be appalled to hear the language that their kid uses when talking with friends.

It's just pointless. I really hate it when conservative parents think that they can go to the school board and change the english class curriculum for every kid in the grade. To those parents: I know this is probably a big surprise to you, but the world doesn't revolve around your opinions.

haha with a statement like that, you're opening a whole other can of worms.

Peter Rabbit? That's really interesting, because I was under the impression that everyone was entitled to their own opinions/beliefs. Banning books for those reasons is just saying, "you're allowed to have your own point of view, as long as you're quiet about it and don't make a scene".

They ruin alot of things for people. It's like the other day on the bus. We had a subsitute bus driver and hes just geting used to the route and stuff, and this lady has the nerve to get on and b**ch at him about how because of driving slow. They are now late for oppintment or something and she asked him if he could take a faster route or something.
If I were him I would have been like "Get the hell off my bus!"
Seriously, if you were afraid of being late you could have gone and picked your kid up from school and no you can't change the route because some kids need to get home before yours and the way it was now is fastist and easiest.

(Sorry if this went off topic but I was just trying to put an example of Parents and there oppinion and how everything evolves around them. Which is true because really some of the books they want banned is books that should really be in schools and kids should read.)

I feel like banning books is a waste of energy. I'm the kind of person who, if I hear about a banned book, will go and find it and read it to see why it was banned.

It's just like alcohol. Because the law forbids you to drink until you're 21, massive amounts of underage people do it. Well. Maybe that's not why, but I think if the drinking age were lower, people wouldn't be as crazy. They would have learned to drink responsibly at a younger age.

Anyway. I hope that helped make my point a little more clear.

And half the time, the reasons for books being banned are dumb.

But I agree with you, Infinity Outlaw, about banning Fahrenheit 451. That makes me el oh el.

I can't believe they banned Fahrenheit 451.
Why? because they burned books?
I read a really good book that are school library has. I would be surprised if they hadn't banned it.
It's called 'The Book Theif'
It's during the time when Hitler would burn all the books. She would steal and take the books that survived the burnings. It's really good.

You guys make great points. It just seems like those who ban books are trying to avoid issues. Well, this is life, and it's very hard to actually avoid anything.

My friend also agrees. Banning causes censory. But its not like they ban it for a good reason they ban it because of something small and stupid.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower. It's banned in sooo many schools. They talk about rape, suicide, drugs, drinking, abuse, masturbation, etc. all the things that actual teens ACTUALLY go through. And yet they all find it too inappropriate. I think it should start being allowed by junior high. Like, why the hell not? Sometimes I think the adults in power (as well as parents) like to close their eyes, put their hands over their ears and go "Lalalala!" to the needs of today's youth.

My best friend was taking a Vampire Literature class (yes, I'm jealous too) and her teacher had banned the Twilight books; i though it was hilarious.

Yeah. I guess a lot of the themes in that book are pretty explicit.

Last year, it was assigned reading for one of my college classes. I found that interesting.
