It was a pleasant enough day when Baako had asked Fayrhen to take a walk with him. The sun had been shining and everything was fairly calm. Of course, Baako had spent plenty of time grooming himself to perfection before they could go anywhere. It wasn't a bad thing that he liked to look good. She was actually glad he did. Fayrhen was secretly quite proud to be seen with such a handsome fellow. She just wasn't going to tell him that.
She'd been listening to him talk, adding 'mmhmms' and 'ohs' every now and then as she thought. Fayrhen actually liked listening to him. More just listening to the sound of his voice. It made her feel comfortable and warm, like a nice blanket.
"Baako? Would you mind terribly if we stopped just over there to rest a bit?", she asked pointing towards a small patch of grass just off the path.

Baako strutted forward proudly. What was there to not be happy about? It was a fine day, he was groomed to perfection, and he had his lovely mate at his side. She was the one. How did he know? Well, he couldn't explain. Everyone else said he acted different around Fayrhen, the kindest words being 'goofy' and 'dramatic'.
Not that the opinions of others mattered; if Fayrhen was happy, that's what mattered. She was the only one the selfish Hollow cared for more than himself. Truly, was there a more beautiful female? Or one as kind, patient, or strong as his warrior queen? There was not!
Baako didn't give voice to any of these thoughts as they walked along. Fayrhen didn't like it when he got too flowerly in his compliments. She deserved the compliments, but he bowed out to the wishes of his mate and kept his chatter simple with a minimum of flouishes thrown in.
When Fayrhen asked if they could stop to rest for a bit he cried, "Certainly, my perilous princess," and changed course to go rest in the grassy patch. Now that he thought about it, his paws really could use some tending so they didn't become too rough with dirt and rock wear.

Fayrhen rolled her eyes and smirked as her called her one of his many pet names. She didn't like the girly things, but she did like it when he added in things like that. It made her feel special. No one had ever made her feel as she did with him. Baako made her calmer, gentler.
She dropped into the soft grass with a thud and rolled onto her back like a pup, closing her eyes. Fayrhen knew Baako wouldn't let something catch them off guard. Breathing deep, she could smell the wonderful scents of late spring and her mate as he sat next to her. She could feel his eyes on her momentarily before he stared to tend his paws. Baako never judged her for doing odd things or for snipping at him occasionally.
That's one of the many things that made her love him so much.

Baako had meticulously tended to each of his paws, delicately removing any plants or rocks stuck between the pads or in the fur using his razor sharp teeth. Once debris was cleared his washed the area with his long tongue, until the pads were as dark as night and the fur soft and fluffy.
"Would you like me to get your paws as well, my brave beauty?" Baako had learned early on in the relationship, before the two were mates, that he needed permission before attempting to groom Fayrhen. She didn't mind his nuzzling or the occasional lick to get a patch of dirt or smooth fur, but extensive grooming was something she had little patience for unless she was in the mood. She seemed relaxed enough....
The wind blew against Baako's back, trouseling the crimson fur. He could smell no dangerous scent being carried upon it, and since he faced the direction the wind was going to he was quiet sure he'd be able to see any trouble before it came upon them.

Fayrhen smiled gently as the wind blew and rolled onto her side to look at her mate. "If you want to", she replied. As she had been laying on her back, she had imagined their lives together. She wanted pups one day. Fayrhen was positive they would be strong like her and hopefully very beautiful as Baako was. Getting her feet under her, she crawled to him and laid on her side again so he could groom her paws.

Baako laid on his belly and scooched a little closer to better reach Fayrhen. Only for his warrior queen would he risk grass stains and snarls by crawling around on his belly.
He placed his front paws on either side of her right front paw, to steady it, then lowered his head and very gently began to n** out the small twigs, plant matter, and rocks. He didn't comment on the rough state of Fayrhen's pads. His warrior queen was just that, a warrior. Ink black, smooth, soft pads just wouldn't have been, well, her. Baako was pampered beauty, Fayrhen was wild beauty.
"Remember the time when I first did this," Baako muttered between a small twig, tossing it aside with a shake of his head and checking to make sure it was the last of the debris on that paw. "It took me weeks to get all the mud out of my fur, you made sure I was that thoroughly dumped in a mud pit." He chuckled at the memory, then bent his head again. After licked the paw clear he moved on to her front left paw.

Fayrhen let out a haughty laugh. "Of course I remember. I thought shoving you in would help rid you of some of your tedious grooming habits." She laughed again as he gently cared for her, this one softer. He was the only one she had ever allowed to touch her. He was also the only one she would ever feel safe with.
He had changed some. She knew before that Baako would have never risked messing up his fur. The small things made her smile and feel so warm. Fayrhen had actually been surprised when he asked her to become his mate. At first she was shocked, then she was joyous. The impossible had happened and Baako had seen the real her, no matter how insulting she had been.
"I also thought you looked cute covered in mud", she chuckled.

Baako's snort was half disbelief and half humor. He could say anything since he was currently detangling a snarl, which required careful nips and pulls to get it out without pulling the fur out. Finally it was free, and he could bathe the paw. Between licks he commented, "Maybe, but I look much better without the mud."
He ran through a dozen other senarios in his head as he scooted to get Fayrhen's back paws. Most ended in her favor, like that time she shoved him into a lake, the time he woke up covered in forest mast and green cockleburrs, and that absoluetly horrid time she had covered him in tree sap before covering him in forest mast and cocklefurrs.
That last punishment he had earned though, and the memory of how made him shake with laughter. By now he was finishing his grooming of Fayrhen's last paw. "Do you remember-," he started, and proceeded to launch into the reminicent tale of the time he had somehow managed to surround Fayrhen with a low wall of rocks and plants. He sat outside the structure and started howling for all he was worth. His warrior queen didn't take well to sudden wakeup calls. Finding herself surrounded, she had proceeded to tear down the wall with a viciousness that impressed him. It wasn't until most of it was gone that she realized she was "killing" rocks and branches, and that the "blood" in her mouth was actually mud. Ooooh, did he have to run for his life that night!

"Oh yes, I remember that well. And I remember how you shrieked when you woke up the next morning to the sap and cocklefurrs. You were mad at me for a week while you got it out", she laughed after he'd finished with her paws. Fayrhen rolled onto her belly and looked at her mate solemnly. Then burst into hysterical laughter as she remembered the first time he'd met her father.
"Do you remember what Dad said when I took you to meet him? 'No one is good enough for my little girl! Let alone some snide pretty boy who probably can't defend himself!'", she said in a deep mocking voice and then burst into laughter again. "I never cared what he said anyways. Dad was always wrong about so many things." Crawling closer, she nuzzled into Baako's neck and sighed.

Baako snorted, tilting his head just a bit so that he could rest his chin on his mate without distrubing her own position. Fayrhen's father had freaked him out just a tad. Not cause of any threats he made, or anything like that. It was because he was an addict. Baako knew there was always a good chance he would one day become one, and it was horrid to think he might become a twisted or neutral addict. They were just so less attractive.
"I would return the favor and introduce you to my parents, but I fear I have no clue where they are, or if they're even still alive."

"I know, my love. I don't mind", Fayrhen said lazily. The little gears in her mind were turning and turning. She remembered that Baako did have family, though. "Don't you have a brother?"
Fay had a sister that she never saw or spoke to. She never saw her mother, either. All she had was her crazy father. Fay did an internal eyeroll.

Baako paused. Now that Fayrhen mentioned it.... Baako never really saw his family, and once his mate had come into his life his brother and sisters slipped to the farthest corner of his mind.
"I do. A twin, actually. We share the same fur pattern, just not the same colors. I have little sisters as well, also twins." He shook his head. "I fear I haven't seen any of them in quite some time. Much like you and your sister."
Plus he was just a little scared of what would happen if Fayrhen ever met Frankie. His brother was loveable in that overenthusiastic way. Since Baako had barely survived his enthusiastic courting of his warrior queen, he shuddered to think of what would happen to Frankie. Poor little brother wouldn't know what hit him.

"That's too bad. Maybe we should visit them sometime. It would be nice." It was odd that Fay had actually thought of that. Normally she would find some sort of excuse not to, but Baako had changed her. Perhaps for the better.
"I would like to meet your brother some time", she told him, nuzzling his neck as she sat up. What was going on with her? Maybe the prospect of having pups in the future was calming her temper. Patience was key, after all.

((Did you see? Baako became an Addict :3 The cert is in my journal. Probably gonna leave him normal for the rest of this RP though.))
Baako chuckled. "It might take some searching. Goodness knows where Frankie is, he has enough energy to run even me ragged." Which Baako didn't mind. The only thing that irked him about his brother was he would be exceptionally handsome if he just took care of his looks. Frankie had none of Baako's love of grooming.
He was interrupted from his thoughts when the wind changed direction. It flung a powerful, musky scent into his face, like a slap. Baako actually sneezed from the strength of it. "What the-," he started to say, rising from the ground. Gracefully, of course. Many a battle could be avoided if one used a proper stance of power and beauty.
((I'll let you decide what comes charging up to ruin their peaceful walk lol.))

((I own Frankie, remember? XD))
Fay gave Baako a worried look. Then she smelled it. "What do you think it could be?" She wasn't too worried. Fay could handle herself fine. It was her mate she worried for. He was beautiful, but she wasn't sure how well he could handle something if it attacked them. She was the trained fighter, and he was the...beautician.
She stood with him, ready for anything. ((She loves him, but isn't too sure about his abilities. XD))
