Please bear with me, as this is a little complex to explain! I'll try and make it as simple as possible.
Imagine two scenarios:
1. Two secretaries, of the same age and personal circumstances, do practically the same job. One finds out that the other earns considerably more than she does. The better paid secretary, however, is quicker, more efficient and more reliable at her job while the lower paid secretary is slow, inaccurate and unreliable.
2. Two janitors, of the same age and ability, do practically the same job and both do it equally well. One finds out that the other earns considerably more than he does. The better paid janitor, however, has a family that he supports from his income, while the lower paid janitor is single and has no dependants.
In both cases, assume that all the relevant facts have been stated.
Is the salary discrepancy, in each case, fair or unfair?
