I hope you aren't offending by what i'm going to say ((i don't mean for it to be offensive)), but i know where he is right now and it's really not a happy place.
Though I can sypathize with his dependancy, he needs to know that you have other engagments --just make sure you don't tell him that they're more important than him; whether they really are, or aren't more important--
Slowly space yourself from him, but don't completely remove yourself unless you want to.
If you don't want to do that, introduce him to come new people. Chances are he won't cuddle up to them right away, but with the right people and enough given time, he'll make other friends and will become less dependant on you ^^
