I believe that anyone interested discussing these novels knows the plot details. biggrin

Twilight has been coming up a lot in other threads, so share your opinions.

Edit: Please be respectful, even if you disagree with someone.

I like Stephenie Meyer's storytelling abilities, while I respectfully disagree with her portrayal of relationships. I'm not on either extreme end of the spectrum.

I liked her books before everyone started using her as a standard for either best book ever or all YA is trash. When these two standards came out, I distanced myself from the franchise.

What I would like to see--which isn't exactly relevant to the series, but the author--is something new. I'd like to see her move on, perhaps create a new franchise, or publish the ghost story she teased fans with two years ago.

There are so many things I find wrong with the Twilight series. Sure, if you're just looking for some fanfiction-esque romance, then go ahead. But really? Sparkling vampires? NO.

My first problem: Bella. She is your quintessential Mary-Sue. She's smart, she's humble, she's a good cook, she's slender, everyone wants to be with her. What's her flaw? She's a klutz. NO. That is not a personality flaw. If she were selfish or dumb or bitchy, then I wouldn't want to carve her into small pieces. And let's not forget that she's trying to set the feminist argument back several decades. When Edward leaves her in the second book, she goes to pieces and swears she can't live without him. What happened to being independent? What happened to living a fulfilling life without a man?

And the rest of the characters are just as bad. I mean, they never develop; their personalities are dry and boring.

Then there's the story itself, or lack of story, actually. What is this about? I don't even know. Every time the book had potential to get interesting, Stephenie Meyer killed it. Like in the fourth book, where I thought that maybe she could redeem herself a little by throwing in an epic fight scene. But no. It ended peacefully.

THESE ARE VAMPIRES. THEY SUCK YOUR BLOOD.

Oh wait. I forgot. These aren't vampires. These are some strange creatures that sparkle in the sun and walk around during the day and drink animal blood. Um, excuse me? Why don't we just take everything that's ever been written about vampires and just throw it away? Oh, right, that's exactly what she did.

And don't even get me started on the "romance" aspect. Please. It is not romantic when your "boyfriend" sneaks into your room and watches you sleep. If my boyfriend did that, I'd kick him in the face. If you're going to be in my room, cuddle me. Don't be a creep about it.

Okay. I just got myself all worked up so I'm gonna stop there. haha

No, I lied. One more thing. I really don't think Stephenie Meyer can write at all. It seems like she just uses a thesaurus to throw in big words so she seems smarter than she really is. Honestly, to me, the series just seems like the wet dream of a fifteen year old girl who can't score a guy. So she writes about herself being perfect with a guy who is also perfect.

That's my opinion, as respectfully as I can present it. I am definitely on the extreme end of the spectrum. The end that despises the series.

I wonder how she even thought of the idea to make vampire sparkle.

Personally I go back and forth with this series. I really liked it when I read it in middle school but as I've gotten older I understand how developed these characters are from real people. It is very fake the way Bella and Edward are kind of perfect, even the process of becoming a vampire in her books is perfecting you but this was a book meant for pre-teens who aren't going to know much about love and relationships and who are going to picture someone absolutely perfect for them, who takes them on the perfect first date, which ends - of course - perfectly.

Now the vampires sparkling in the sunlight and such did suck in my opinion (lame pun intended xp ) but that is her right as an author to do that. Why should she have to conform to the norm just because vampires have been burning alive in the sun for years now? Why should we say this is wrong and stiffle her creativity? Oh, right. We shouldn't.

Now onto the things I liked about her books: I liked her descriptions and her history of the La Push wolves in the last book and, hey, at least people who read these books, actually read something. All the hype got people excited about reading and these are all nicely sized books. So, there you go. That's my opinion on this 'pop culture phenomenon' called Twilight. (Her sci-fi romance called The Host was way better though with only one Mary-Sue who actually pulled it off in a not as annoying way. Just sayin'. wink )

I suppose that is a valid point you make. But my issue is that since she's influencing a younger age group, they're not going to reach out for more vampire series; I have a feeling they're mostly interested in the Bella/Edward aspect. Maybe I'm totally off the mark here, maybe they though, "Ooh, this is a vampire story, let me give it a shot." But if you're interested in a vampire book, you're not going to read Twilight, you'll look for Dracula, or even that True Blood series instead. (I've never watched or read True Blood, so I don't actually know anything about it. I just know that there are vampires. I'm assuming they don't sparkle.)

I totally forgot to mention this in my other rant, but I am just perpetually annoyed by the fans. Not the ones that are here, in this thread, because you are all literate and present good arguments. I'm talking about the ones who obsess to the point of no return, the ones who think twice about their boyfriends/husbands because they want someone like Edward, the ones who think this is the greatest work of literature LIEK EVAR. I want to bash all them over my head with my hockey stick and just tell them to go read some real books with substantial content.

So I'm going to apologize and just say that pretty much no matter what anyone says, I will always despise Twilight and Stephenie Meyer, but as long as your argument is literate and whatnot, then I'll respectfully disagree, instead of smacking you and disagreeing.

Just to put in my two cents worth, Twilight wasn't all that bad...until the fans came. With the fans went the book for me. I'm constantly reading junk literature because I have nothing better to do (and it makes me laugh), but when Twilight became popular I stopped finding the series pleasantly amusing and began finding it horrifically annoying.

Of the books in the series, I liked New Moon best because: a) It is to date, everyone's least favorite book, b) It made me laugh. Bella was so pathetic in that book that my friend and I literally laughed our heads off at the jokes we made at her expense. (Then when the movie came out, we laughed are heads off and people got mad at us.)

It's not that great of a book, but it isn't too horrible. It's not like I had to put it down because it was sooo horrendous that I felt like vomitting.

Now that i finished that up... awkward ending to my shpiel shall ensue.
Gosh I stink at ending what I write.

Haha. Thanks. biggrin I like not being smacked in the head with hockey sticks. There really is no reason to apologize though. That's just your opinion (an opinion that's fun to hear - or rather - read by the way xd ) and at least has real reasoning behind it, like the rest of the people in this thread.

But WRITING, WRITING, WRITING makes all the difference! If it's not a good writer they can't get their point across.

Next I agreed. Again Look back to my cuddly zombie comment. Case in point.

everyone has their own idea of romance, that my friend is called mid-aged women romance. or Role-playing, not attractive to the younger audience but to not so much.

As myself? I do NOT like this book, time and time again we see this tween romance crap. That doesn't happen. I understand this is a book, but at least give girls a HEALTHY understanding of love and loss. Not a stalker.

"Whoever is reading the book they can put there personality into her so to speak."

That's actually an interesting concept that I've never thought about before. Kudos to that.

But I'm going to have to respectfully disagree. When I go to read a book, I don't want to be the main character, I want to follow the main character. And I want them to be interesting, you know? When I read Twilight, I just wanted to slap some sense into Bella. Seriously. Especially in the second book. Urgh. That whole "oh my god Edward left me I can't go on I'm going to die waaaahh" part reaaallllyyy made me want to punch a baby.

Anyway, if I wanted my own personality in a character, I'd write my own book and insert it there. Though actually, when I'm writing, I try to leave myself out of it. You know what I mean?

I guess I wasn't very clear on the lack-of-a-story part. Conflict or not, I think the story still sucks. What is this book about? It's about Bella and Edward and their desperate attempt to be together. Okay, so that could make a decent storyline, if, you know, the author didn't suck and this wasn't some twisted ***** romance.

Yeah.
