I know that it seems rather weird to others to fall in love with character in a book, but if they are written and depicted well they are indeed almost real. A couple books I have read had induced me to fall in love with a couple of their characters, generally not the main protagonist. Though if a character is badly written, they come off flat, whiny, and completely Mary Sue. Characters who have no depth bug me to no end, they don't come off the page and speak to me. When I read, I sometimes pretend that the characters are real and standing around me. If I can't visualize them, then I usually dislike the book I am reading.
An example of such a character is Mattrim Cauthon from Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time. Deep down in my heart I wish that Mat was a real person, which I bet if I looked hard enough I could find him in the real world. Not the exact copy, but someone who resembles him. He is sarcastic, and has a gambling problem. In the story he generally tries to avoid fights, but trouble follows him around and he has some extreme luck.
On the other hand, Bella Swan from Stephanie Meyers Twilight series is horrendous. For a absolute basic character to wail on, Bella has no depth and will come off as a shallow girl. She doesn't seem to have any faults, and everyone is out to get her. It comes off as nonsense to me, and made me wish that she would die a horrible death.
My questions to you: Have you come across any characters that you wished were real? Do you have a book who's character that stands out above the rest? Have you ever fallen in love with a character?

I don't know if I've ever fallen in love with a character, but there are a few that I particularly like.
Jo from Little Women is a character I really look up to. I referenced her in my college admissions essay. haha
Father Ralph de Bricassart from The Thornbirds is kind of a dreamboat. I don't think there are any physical descriptions of him, but he's awesome. And a priest!

Haha I completely agree with what you said about Bella. I despise her and everything else about that series.
Let's see. Okay, when I was younger I was a huge fan of Maud Hart Lovelace's Betsy-Tacy series. I ate those books up. And at the time, I only owned four of them, the series in which the three girls are around 10 years old. I was about that age when I read that series, and I desperately wished they were real people because I would've loved to be friends with them.
And actually, I have two best friends that, plus me, are actually kind of like Betsy, Tacy and Tib. My one friend is kind of shy and quiet, like Tacy, the other is like Tib in that she's fearless and just does things, and then I'm kind of like Betsy, in that I make a lot of decisions and I write a lot.
But anyway, I recently discovered the rest of the series, where they go to high school and beyond and my wishes that they were real people came back. *wistful sigh*
As far as a book character that's really stood out, I can't pick just one. I read so many books and admire so many characters that it's hard to pick. A few are Umbridge, from Harry Potter, for being so positively evil. Robert Langdon, from The Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons, for being so absolutely normal. Well, as normal as one can get while going on these crazy adventures. Lyra, from His Dark Materials for not being perfect. She was wild and a little naive and very often needed help from other people. She couldn't just achieve everything on her own. Those are some among others.
I can't say that I've ever fallen in love with a character. Maybe I will in the future. Who knows?

I totaly wish Clair from The Morganvill Vampires was real. She could help me with my math (: I loved Imogen from the Trinity Saga: The Pocket Watch. She was brave, smart, amusing, and actually used her brain. I loved how even when their was no one really on her side she didn't let others push her around and not only asked questions, but went and tried to find them for herself. Yes I have fallen in love with a character, two actually. Dylan from Hush Money, and Alex from Destiny Binds. With Dylan he's smart and knows when to draw the line and dose what ever is needed for the people he cares about. Alex was so romantic and wasen't adverse to doing what ever he thought was the right thing to do.

I'll admit it. I've fallen in love or have become obsessed with a character from a book.
