A lone ninja occupied a rocky field. He lay on the ground idly cleaning a kunai. Directly behind him, curled up so that the ninja was actually leaning on it, was a coyote the size of a rhinoceros. This, in addition to the fact that this ninja was so famous as to be recognizable on sight, made him easily identifiable. Syaoran Masamune had come to the village.
He was dressed differently this day. His customary grey attire had been discarded for similar garments in black. It wasn't a big change. An ANBU mask and his sword Rage were still affixed to opposite hips, his clothes hadn't changed much save for color, and he still wore his Gaioh headband, despite the collapse of that village. The black was for the mourning of that lost home.
There were changes, however. His cloak was replaced by a short black cape that barely reached down his back. A pair of daggers that typically adorned his thighs had been moved to a crisscross position on the back of his hips. They hung on separate belt that hadn't been part of Syaoran's usual outfit. His gloves too, were new, partially plated in steel at the back of the hand and between the first pair of knuckles. The soles and toes of his boots had been given similar plating, as had the shoulders of his ninja vest.
Still, there was no question that this was the infamous Ex-ANBU Captain Syaoran Masamune of Gaioh. No, the real question was, what was he doing here? Only one person in the village knew.

A spark of black flame shot up a small distance away from this man and when it is gone the only thing that is left is the form of Raistlyn. He looks like he always does wearing his black outfit with a black trench coat. The sword sheath on his hips hold his swords and he stands there tall and pale.
"Masa-sama, how nice to see you again. It has been quite some time since we had the chance to talk. I must admit that I am a little surprised that you are willing to make this big of a splash in this village knowing that I work with one that you hate with a passion." Rai says calmly referring to the fact that he works with Chaos on occasion.
Rai bows to the man that he acknowledges as a dangerous fire jutsu user. One that Rai is not sure if he can take in a fight but at the same time he will not betray his inner turmoil to another being no matter how dangerous he or she is.
"Shall we begin Masamune sama?" Rai says calmly and carefully not taking his eyes off of this man but not standing up yet either.

"Begin? Indeed. Come at me when you think you're ready. I'll show you how everything you ever thought you knew about fire is wrong" said Masamune, rising to his feet but not making any other moves to ready himself against an assault. Nothing physical, anyway. He did begin drawing chakra, as was evident by the way this made the air around him shimmer with the waste heat it dumped from his fireproofing seals. The coyote rose as well, its massive head level with Masamune's shoulder.
Ordinarily, Masamune wouldn't have even gotten up for a new opponent, but if this one was worthy enough to work with Chaos (and he doubted it, instead he imagined Chaos was using this poor man), then he'd be formidable enough to warrant his full attention. But it wouldn't do to allow this one to see him sweat. Thus the aloof, dismissive tone, the apparent lack of concern. Besides, he was counting on his reputation to psych his opponent out. Everyone had heard of the monstrous powers of one Syaoran Masamune.
"Anytime" he prodded with an amused smirk on his face.

"You do realize that I am a lava jutsu user?" Rai says with a slight smirk on his face. "Knowing that and standing in this dormant Volcano might not be the best thing to say." Rai says as he too draws chakra to himself. The very ground beneath them both begins to heat up.
Rai starts taking inventory of everything around them and then looks up at Masamune with a smirk. Rai makes a few hand seals and then lets loose his first attack. "Lava release: Eruption of lava no jutsu." Rai says as Lava begins to shoot out of the ground all around them making the very air thin. The small bunch of trees around them starts to dehydrate and the leaves start to go through the change in color as the water in the air and ground starts to evaporate.
Rai also looks at him and activates his eyes. Rai's eyes which are normally the color of charcoal now burst with red like a burning ember of magma. Rai likes his chances with this fight, and besides if he shows enough promise here maybe this man... no this legend will choose to teach him and make him yet stronger.
After all that is why Rai decided to work with Chaos in the first place, but now... well Rai knows what Chaos thinks about him. And while Rai still respects Chaos Rai wants to be stronger than him or his bloodline. Rai wants to take Chaos out of the picture if at all possible and if not Rai wants to be taken as a person to be respected and feared... And if Rai has to pick on or the other... He will take feared.

Lava jutsu. This got Masamune's brain working. What little he knew about the subject was that they took a shitload of chakra to enact, and even more to maintain, and the returns were generally small. Reasons being that unlike water, molten rock was heavy, and therefore took much more chakra to move, once (if) you got it out of the ground. Fire, by contrast, was both easier and less strenuous to use, and got similar results; to say nothing of the increased versatility. There was only so much you could do with lava. No wonder Raistlyn wanted to learn some new tricks. If Masamune played his cards right, he could wear this opponent out and finish him off with one big, flashy show of force, and still have energy to spare.
Masamune waited until the lava surrounded him and closed in on his feet, then jumped high into the air at the last second. He wasn't terribly worried about the heat. His fireproof protections were strong enough to let him actually walk on the lava for a short while, and he had a pretty good idea how to extend that time indefinitely. But he didn't want cooling lava clinging to his body and weighing him down as it reverted to igneous rock. Time for the first lesson he decided. "You do realize I'm a weapons jutsu user?" he said, mirroring that stupid grin of Rai's. He was hanging in the air where he'd hit the high point of his jump, his Ichijin heritage allowing him to tread the wind as easily as the ground. "Knowing that and surrounding yourself with lava so you've got fewer places to dodge might not be the best idea". With that, he flung the kunai he'd been cleaning at Rai's head, and with it, a little surprise for his would-be student.

Rai looks as the Lava attack misses Masamune by a few moments and realized right away the tactic that had been implemented countless times before. Rai also knew that he had to not fall into the playing and complicent attitude that he had been falling into as of late. While Lava is heaver than water and it does take a lot to start that is all Rai needed to do though. While it is in the ground lava stays in its molten form far easier than when it is in the open. Hence Rai's first attack was to test out the speed at which Masa could react to an attack that was for the most part a surprise.
Rai looks up and sees the kunai start to fly towards him, Rai knowing this mans reputation as a weapons master was not to take this Kunai as a normal one. Rai looks down and makes a gesture with his arms. From all around him shoots threads of some type of metallic looking substance. On closer inspection it would be shown that these threads came from his person. The threads wrap around him and create a dome around him to protect him from the kunai deflecting the initial impact and sending it rebounding harmlessly away... now to wait to see the real reason the Kunai had been thrown.

The kunai bounced off the sheild Raistlyn had put up.. and swung back around. Masamune had attached a near-invisible chakra thread to it in the hopes that Raistlyn would block with a weapon or catch the kunai, in which case he'd have reattached the chakra thread to the weapon or Rai's hand, and take control of it. An unexpected counter to an unexpected move. Maybe Rai was a more promising student than he'd assumed. The kunai stopped and hovered over Masamune's shoulder as he thought about his next move. Metal was a good counter to fire. Normally he'd just blast the shield until the metal started radiating so much heat it would make the dome unbearable. But there was no guarantee Rai wasn't too heat-resistant for this to work, and he didn't want to waste chakra. No, he needed a different tactic. And he had just the thing. Masamune drew Rage from its sheath. The blade started assailing his thoughts as soon as he gripped it, but he shut it out with practised discipline. No threads, metal or no, could withstand the unnaturally keen edge of Rage. He Leapt in for the attack...

The threads start to recede from the defensive shield that was constructed from them. The threads go down behind the form of Rai and towards his feet. The man looks up at Masamune and just smiles as he comes at him with the sword drawn. Rai had heard tale of the sword Rage. It was said that the sword was one of three such special blades that were supposed to hold all forms of special abilities. But Rai also knew a secret that not many other people knew about that. There was more than just the three blades... in fact Rai's own sword was of such strength. But Rai also had heard that the sword Rage had a side effect where it would assail its wielders thoughts.

Masamune dropped low and slashed at Raistlyn's legs with Rage, one-handed. But that wasn't his only move. With his free hand, he flicked his index finger, tugging at the chakra string that still held the kunai. It responded by flying in high at Raistlyn, coming around in an arc to harry him from an odd angle, almost behind him. It wasn't likely that Raistlyn would be able to block both attacks, unless those threads were a lot quicker this time, and it would be tough to dodge because of the opposing angles of attack. But not impossible. Quick thinking would allow Raistlyn to stop one attack and evade the other. This was a test to see if Raistlyn could operate effectively with no time to think. Masamune himself fought mostly by instinct, his ability to analyze and counter attacks in a split-second allowed him to hold his own against the fastest opponents. It made Rage a perfect fit for him, the naked fury of the sword enhanced his fighting strength rather than impairing it, as it would a more calculating ninja. When there was no room for thinking, his thoughts couldn't be violated by the sword. Instead, he merged with Rage's personality, the two minds working as one. The only drawback was that it was difficult to recover from such a mindset, though that was small comfort to an opponent who was kept so off-balance by the pace of the offensive that they themselves had no time to think their way out of it.

Upon the touch of the sword known far and wide as Rage the man known as Rai exploded in a shower of Lava and Diamonds and at the same time two hands reach out of the ground at Masamune's feet to grab a hold of him and hold him to the spot. As a result of this the Kunai would not harm the thing that was up there.
In truth the figure that Masa had attacked was a clone that Rai had made when he was inside of the threaded barrier. The clone was made to be a distraction for Masa who had already unsheathed the sword Rage. Rai knew that he needed to be smart about the attacks in this fight and also knew that if it came down to a sword fight that he would more than likely lose to this man who had forged himself a name in the weapon fighting skills that he knew.

Masamune recognised the tactic right away, but it didn't save him. The explosion washed over him. And it became apparent why his clothing was different. The metal plates affixed to his flak vest were breifly illuminated by a multitude of etched seals. Masamune felt the vest draw chakra forcibly from his body, which was pulled into a latticework of protective jutsu he'd placed on the item. The force of the blast itself was also pulled into the vest, and negated in large part. What actually hit Masamune was still enough to wind him though, and his face bled from a couple of cuts by diamond shards.
"That's one of Chaos' old tricks." he said after catching his breath, more to himself than Rai. "I should have known." His empty hand flashed through a string of one-handed seals. It was another of the tricks that made Masamune unique. Most ninja from Gaioh needed both hands to make seals, but Masamune got his basic knowledge from a different village. To drop your weapon before drawing blood in his home village was a sign of disrespect. Thus you had to learn to make handseals with one hand full. The chakra string vanished as Masamune cut off the flow of chakra to it, and ran that flow to his attack. That kunai was ruined anyway. Masamune pointed at the hand gripping his right foot and smiled. "Here's another of Chaos' tricks."
"Chakara cannon no jutsu"
Pure chakra flashed from his fingertips with the speed and force of a bullet. Masamune had made sure to aim for the wrist, so as not to accidentally hit his own foot.

The hands which were nothing more than a earth clones hands crumbled at the force of the entire blast from the Chakra Cannon. Rai which had theorized that Masamune knew that jutsu was a good bit away from him now and starting a new jutsu. when the blast hit the ground the ground would blow away with the force of a small volcanic eruption as he started his very next attack and jutsu. Rai had also been semi prepared for the very real threat that this man would see his attack pattern as a copy of Chaos' and as a result try to write him off as a petty copycat of Chaos' style. Rai though was going to try his best to show that he was a threat.
The ground around Masamune's feet would start to glow and then explode with the strength of a small volcanic eruption. The glow would be shown as a heated faction of rock which to an inexperienced ninja as the fallout of the Chakra cannon. Rai also knew of this jutsu and in fact knew the jutsu as well... He was testing now to see if this man... this legendthat he wanted to be trained by would be worthy that the man would be able to see what Rai would seem an obvious point of attack from a very high heated jutsu. As a result Rai who was safely hidden from sight of Masamune and from the scent of the Wolf had enacted yet another jutsu to exploded out from the spot where the chakra cannon had hit... The Explosion would also send Lava and Diamonds shards shooting out of the ground towards Masamune.
Rai is seen to start to form for the ground a little bit away from this whole scene of attack and response. The only major question that needed to be answered now that the show of how Rai preferred to attack would be is this actually him or would this be another clone?
The only thought that Rai had is also something that is similar to the match that is here. 'Does Masamune think that Rai is still too weak to be taught or is he worthy enough now?' Rai had figured that he would have to prove himself but was really hoping that he could stop his attacks here so that he could be taught. If he had not impressed Masamune enough he would continue without remorse but if he had he would stop the attack now and just become his student. Rai was hoping that Masamune would now take Rai seriously as Rai had noticed that Masamune was seemingly relying on his reputation to cause a type of apprehension on Rai's part. Rai was hopping that the theory that he was easily intimidated would be put to rest and buried and burned.

Masamune wasn't dumb, but he had, in fact already assumed that Rai was copycatting Chaos. So when he destroyed the earth clone, he fully expected it to explode under him, and was already in the process of leaping away; a task made easier since he was already crouched after his last ill-fated attack. He was therefore surprised when not only did the clone simply crumble, but the whole area beneath where he'd just been erupted like Vesuvius. Too close. I can only absorb a couple more blasts like that last one, and something tells me the next one will be bigger. Time for a change of pace. he thought to himself. He muttered something to himself as he thought, and his hand flitted through a short series of seals, and just as he hit the ground, his body exploded into a plume of thick grey smoke. The cloud of smoke rose into the air faster than would be expected, and came to hover a good thirty feet up. As it rose, it formed a ring that rotated clockwise parallel to the ground. And finally, from this ring of smoke, several smaller plumes of smoke came forth. The smaller forms grew bigger and shaped themselves into likenesses of Masamune. If Rai knew as much about Masamune as he professed to, he'd know this as Masamune's smoke clone jutsu, and that the clones reformed when struck. Capable of doing damage, but difficult to destroy.

Rai Appears from the far side of the ring and a long metal looking thread was out from his hand. The thread started to glow with his forsaken Chakra. The man started to swing the arm around in a circular motion and he moves to attack the clones and keeps going to look around for Masamune. "Come out Masa... Why do you hide from me?" Rai sneers trying to bring out the man while his threads kick up some winds trying to disperse the globs of heated air.

It seemed Raistlyn had done his homework. Strong winds could indeed disperse not only Masamune's smoke clones, but his smoke body jutsu, as well. The clones were blown away, the vaporous bodies unable to hold together under the windstorm. The larger cloud of smoke that was Masamune likewise blew apart, and the former ANBU dropped out of the sky like a rock, his jutsu disrupted and his body re-formed. He righted himself and stopped his fall with his bloodline just a couple feet from the ground, then landed gingerly and considered his opponent. He stood there silently for a moment, then spoke.
"....Well, You definitely seem to be as tough as you say you are. I suppose you stand a good enough chance to survive what I have to teach. It won't be easy, but then, I suppose you knew that already" he said. He walked over to the rock he'd been leaning against when Raistlyn had shown up and sat down on it. Then he took off his gloves and vest, and set them on the ground with his other belongings. "So. What is it you want to learn?"
