I'm always looking for new books to read and on your own when you aren't looking for something particular it's hard to find a new one...Well for me it is, I'm impatient when it comes to browsing in a store.
I like sci-fis, fantasy, mysteries, love stories (not passion ones, more like ones based on a main plot with some romance in between or like pride and prejudice kind of thing), or something dark like phantom of the opera, but not horror.
Any suggestions like that are welcomed, or random suggestions if you think of something really good you think I'd like.
Oh and has anyone read "The Sad Thing About Lemon Cake"
I haven't but heard it is good and wondered if you have.

I don't really dig fantasy, but I read the Witch Season books by Jeff Mariotte and they were pretty good. He did a good job of mixing fantasy elements into a realistic world.

Great Expectations by Charles Dickens is kind of dark, but I also found it to be funny.

A Little Friendly Advice by Siobhan Vivian was really good. It's got a little bit of mystery with a little bit of romance and family drama thrown in.

Oh, and I just read How To Say Goodbye in Robot by Natalie Standiford, and it was really good. It doesn't really fit into any of your specifications, but I just thought I'd mention it. xp

I haven't read The Sad Thing About Lemon Cake, but I'll have to check that out. If I think of any other ideas I'll add those too.

For some sci-fi, I'd recommend Philip K. d**k if you haven't read any of his stuff before. I'd say most of his stuff leans towards being a bit darker than you average sci-fi. He does a lot of novels with a theme relating to some degree to the question of what is real. Ubik or Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? are both pretty good books to start with.

I'll also recommend City of Saints and Madmen by Jeff Vandermeer. It's sort of a dark fantasy, I think the author calls it part of the New Weird genre, but that's a kind of wibbly-wobbly new little genre that's hard to describe. Anyways it's a series of short stories and some faux histories and reports focusing mainly around the fictional city of Ambergris. It's dark and weird and wonderful.

You could try the Skulduggery Pleasant series. It's humorous sci-fi/fantasy spiked with adventure and mystery. No real romance though...

Infinity Outlaw
For some sci-fi, I'd recommend Philip K. d**k

Definitely this. As well as Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep read VALIS by him. They are both great books.

One of my favourite fantasy authors is David Gemmel, particularly his book Midnight Falcon.

Another good series is Trudi Canavans Magician trilogy.

As for my favourite romance of all time; Ernest Hemingway - Farewell to Arms.
