I'm bored right now, so what am I doing? Making new threads.

Okay! Pride and Prejudice. This is more of a classic book that you might be made to read in school, but I actually never had to. I read it on my own. It's part of my attempt to read all these old, classic novels.

Anyway. I seriously hate having to summarize a book in one sentence so I'm going to be a rebel and just link you to the wikipedia page instead: here. this will be much more informative than any summary I could think of.

Favorite character: Again. I can't help it if the main character is my favorite, but I adore the character of Elizabeth. For the time period she lived in, she was incredibly independent and outspoken and I loved that about her.

I also loved how real the romance between her and Mr. Darcy was. It wasn't like that Twilight crap where she sees Edward and is all like "Oh, now I can't live without him. I'll die." Elizabeth Bennett would have been perfectly fine without a man in her life; she was a strong female character.

So. Questions to spark discussion. When did you read this book and did you do it of your own free will or did you have to read it for school? And did the circumstances under which you read it have an effect on your opinion?

And a question actually about the book: Who was your favorite character? Why? (I know, I'm so original.)

Oh! And what did you think of the movie? Was it an accurate representation of the book?

Read it of my own will because I loved the movie.
Under the circumstance it was perfect cause I was dealing with some arrogant guys myself.

Fave character is Elizabeth for same reasons as you, and also Darcy because I fell for him..lol

The new movie was good, best Darcy I thought out of all the movies..Best fitting the book would be the four hour BBC series that use to be on.

*flails* I am a big Jane Austen fan. *points to sig* I read Pride and Prejudice on my own and fell head over heels in love with it. My favourite character... well Mrs. Bennet is highly amusing with her "poor nerves". However, Elizabeth is probably my favourite.

As for the movie... I thought they both had there good features but I must say that for accuracy and casting I like the A&E version with Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth.

I've also read Ms. Austen's other novels and I loved them just as much. They all have the sparkling dialogue, the well paced and rich plot and characters that has made Jane Austen a literary great. I loved Persuasion, Mansfield Park, and Sense and Sensibility especially.

Actually, I think I was up late one night trying to find something to watch on TV and I stumbled upon Pride and Prejudice. It was the one with Keira Knightley and...other people. haha

After that, I really wanted to read the book, so I pulled it off my bookshelf and did just that. My mom asked if I was reading it for school and was surprised when I said no. I guess it is different from what I usually read. But I loved it.

Next on my reading list is Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.

Speaking of which, has anyone read that? Or Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters? What do you think of these books?

Have you read Emma? That one is my second Fave.

I haven't read any of her other books. I really want too though.

Is there any specific one you'd recommend over another? I'm going to read them all regardless, but I want to know what you guys think.

I think Emma is the second best, next to my fave Pride and Prejudice.

Oh, I need to read this. I keep hearing that it's a wonderful story but I never got around to it because the only copy my family has is in this massive Jane Austen Treasury. lol Maybe I should try the library.

I love Sense & Sensibility thought.

Pride and Prejudice is the one and only Austen book that I've read up to this point. I had it assigned in my senior year of high school in my British Literature class. I normally loathe your typical "girly" book so I went in with pretty low expectations... and then I absolutely loved it. I loved how she managed to make a strong female lead and have romance in her book without sacrificing the female's personality and character for it. So many times the women are complete idiots who can't live without a man, and here she is in a way making fun of this through Mrs. Bennet while Elizabeth does what she pleases. I keep meaning to read some more, Emma and Sense and Sensibility are currently sitting on my shelf, but I just haven't gotten to them yet. So many books to read, so little time.

Oh, and for anyone who likes Austen, I'd recommend checking out some of Elizabeth Gaskell's work.

British Literature? I wish I had a class like that in high school.

I was trying to think of something else to say but I kinda can't. I agree with everything you said. haha

I loved the book. This is the first book, that I went through and found different versions (children's version to the regular ones) because I liked it so much. I read it on my own, and Elizabeth is my favorite character.

As for the movie, which one are you asking about (I've hunted on amazon and other stores for different movies about this story)? The most recent one was alright, but the ending seemed a little off to me...

I'd also like to recommend a book called Darcy's Story by:Janet Aylmer. It's Pride and Prejudice told through Darcy's eyes and the writer did a good job in catching and maintaing the feel of the orginal story.

I had to read it my senior year in high school, and it became my favorite of the 'classic' novels. I'm actually currently rereading it (again...) so I can go back and reread Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (again...)

For anyone who has enjoyed the original, you HAVE to go and read the zombies version. I thought it was absolutly hilarious while still keeping the original story, with a few improvements on how characters end up.

i LOVE jane austen and have read almost all of the books. my favorite, i think, is persuasion. and emma. and lady susan was quite interesting too. i wish that jane austen had turnedit into an actual novel. i always imagined that lady susan would meet her match against a male adversary and that the two would end up together in the end. lady susan is such a devious woman twisted
