The air was hot, humid, and heavy with a host of sounds. Humming, buzzing, shrill, distant cries that could be heard high above head. It was one of the lushest places Vel had ever visited. Gradually the young male had drifted around, into areas that were more thick and lush than any he had ever set foot in before. It was intriguing to him, and he reveled in his quiet exploration of the unfamiliar jungle.

Vel quickly found that there were few places he could stretch his wings out comfortably or even completely. The large trees grew too close together, and there were very few clearings. He had quickly resorted to sliding through the brush on foot, wings tucked in close as he slid through the thick foliage.

The golden dreich had been going along like this for about three days, hunkering down in the massive tangled roots of trees to rest and hunting what he could. But now, as he picked his way through the vegetation, he stumbled upon something that amazed him. Emerald eyes gazed upon a massive piece of stone architecture, covered in glyphs and carvings. Vel had never seen anything like it, and he circled around it slowly, only able to speculate on what might have made it.

Honovi sighed as she focused on yet another aging tome of ancient tribal witchcraft. The pages were small, meant for the inferior hands of the uncivilized Humenchen, and too worn be be turned by a large dragon's claw. So, as she finished one page, she motioned to the young human man at her side to flip the fragile paper to the next set of words. The boy was mute, as she discovered soon after rescuing him. But it didn't matter, for she couldn't understand him, nor could she speak to him. But she was smart enough to have trained him the past nineteen years of his life, and he knew well how to serve and to please her. It was a strained relationship--she didn't really care for him, but needed him for her delicate work with the ancient Humenchen artifacts. So, just as she had spared his life after slaying his parents, she spared his life every single day proceeding.

But the heat within the dense temple was crawling to unbearable measures, and the pages held her interest less and less as she grew uncomfortable. So, as the boy stepped forward to turn the page once again, she rose to her feet and shooed him back into the corner, where he sank down and stared at her with large eyes. Smirking, she turned and took a running leap out of a section of collapsed wall, soaring out into the clear space between the jungle and the temple.

She sighed as the wind hit her wings. Ah! Fresh air!
