I can't.

Maybe it's just that I'm bad at multi-tasking, I don't know. The lyrics distract me. Even when I'm listening to classical I get distracted and then I'm like, "Wait, what were those last 5 pages about?"

How about you?

It's hard for me not to read without having music or something else going on around me. It helps with setting the mood for my reading. Silence while reading creeps me out for some reason, I think it has something to do with my imagination.

Too many scary stories? just kidding! xp

Some of my friends say that music actually helps them concentrate. Music can also be relaxing, so I see how it could help.

If I listen to music I want it to somehow match the mood or the feel of the book. Listening to upbeat anime themes just doesn't work when reading the suspenseful moment when the characters hang between life and death. Similarly heavy metal doesn't work for light comedic banter between the heroine and her love interest. As long as it's within some range of me being able to relate it to the book though I like music. (Although sometimes mismatched music can lead to interesting interpretations of scenes in my head. XD)

In general I'm one of those people who can't stand it being too quiet though. It's one reason I avoid the library like the plague. That place is quiet as the grave and it makes me so uncomfortable I can't read. Even just background noise of cars on the street will do, but not that horrifically sterile silence.

I have to have music while doing absolutely anything. It's nice having background noise. Any other background noise drives me insane (except for reading in class, I have gotten pretty good at drowning out my teachers and fellow classmates).

It depends on the song and the book.
I can read phantom of the opera to it's own sound track.

I also get distracted by tv dialog when reading. I find myself trying to follow both the book and the tv, and I usually end up confused.

I used to be able to listen to instrumental or foreign music when reading.

I never even thought of that!

I just found out that The Wizard of Oz is a book series. Maybe I should try that combination.

haha Sometimes if it's a really good book I can tune the tv out. But only if it's really good!

I will usually listen to something when I'm reading. Whether its the TV, my MP3 Player, the car radio, or my brother or sister practicing their instrument, there is always something going on in the background while I read.

I cant because the lyrics of the song distract me from the words in the book.

I love reading while listening to music. If I can find the absolute right song for a book, sometimes I can almost double my reading speed.

I can smile but I totally tune out the music. ^-^;;.;.

I can't read while listening to music or tv because the music distracts me (unless the book is so good I tune it out but even then I hear it sometimes) and the book distracts me from my tv show. sweatdrop Then I'm all, "Awww...I really wanted to see that epsiode. crying Darn it!" I've tried finding songs to match up to the mood of the book but that doesn't work for me for some reason. I prefer to read in total silence but that means I have to have intervals of activity and sound so I take a break every like every ten pages because I can't take it anymore and I spaz out to music like the weirdo I am. whee
