Whip It stars Drew Barrymore, Ellen Page and Alia Shawkat

It is based off of the novel Whip It by Shauna Cross.

I really enjoyed this movie. I've never lived in a small town, but it seemed to be depicted very well. And of course it was fun to watch rollerskating. I've never been good at skating so it's enjoyable to read about it, or watch it.

Apparently it was Drew Barrymore's first movie as a director, and I thought it was very good.

I'll admit, I watched it purely based on the fact that Zoe Bell Was in it. It was a great movie though, made me want to go join a roller derby team. I never knew it was a book before, but I guess I shouldn't find that too surprising with the number of book to film adaptations they seem to be pumping out.

haha I watched it because Alia Shawkat was in it. I loved Arrested Development.

I agree. It seems like every time I watch a movie "based on _______" comes across the screen.

Haha, I just watched this movie last night! I love it. When I first saw it in theaters I saw that it was based on a book and thought to myself, "I should get it," but I didn't.

Finally, a few months ago, I got it. The story is the same, but the details are a bit different. I want to say that I like the movie better. Sports in books are hard to really portray; in the movie you get to see all the action and experience it differently.

I love Ellen Page, though.

And I skate, myself (I play ice hockey), but watching the movie made me want to go back to my hockey roots and start playing roller again.

You're right. Sometimes, it's easier to watch sports events than it is to read them.

Ice hockey? That sounds fun. I've gone to skating rinks before and they both seem pretty hard.

That doesn't necessarily apply to ALL books that have action or sports or whatever. If the author is good, then they should be able to paint a descriptive enough picture so that you can see what's going on.

And then there are things that are much easier to read about than watch. For exampe, The Da Vinci Code. I loved the book, and all the tangents and historical things in it. But making that into a movie is hard because how are you going to make all those facts known without a character just reciting them? You don't want the audience to get bored.

I heard that movie wasn't so great, anyway.

And ice hockey is fantastic. Skating is my drug; I can't get enough of it. If I could, I would live at an ice rink and skate all the time. I'm addicted.
