.png has always been my favorite image save type due to the support of transparency, but when I save, Photoshop asks if I want to optimize by "interlacing". What does this mean? This has been bugging me for a while now.

You know how some images load in rows while others, when the load, start out blurry and then get sharper?
Interlacing means that the .png will load blurry at first and when it continues to load it will become sharper. Non-interlaced .png's will load in rows. o 3o

Can I ask a Question? What is the difference between .png and .jpeg, and can you save a file as .png in gimp?

In graphic design png is the most used, due to the transparency it offers. Next up would be gif, it has a lower quality, but supports animation and transparency.

jpeg is more popular in photography because of the high quality it allows, but does not support transparency or animation, both of which are not needed when saving edited photographs.

bit of advice:

Never save as bmp (bitmap) everything is compressed to save size, by far the worst format you can save (just saying)

Ok I get it. I will have to try the other two be cause before the only ones I knew of where .cxf (Gimp) and .Jpeg

I never tried the Interlaced cuz I didn't know what it did. xD I'm glad I know now. o: I hate images that are blurry at first then clear up. x__X
I don't even bother with .jpegs with my graphics anymore. .Pngs look so much cleaner, clearer, and the colors come out better.

Oh! I never knew what it was either. Thanks terrytini for explaining. I had always clicked OKAY whenever they ask to save as Interlaced or None.

I never knew that. I always wondered how people did that! Thanks terrytini!
And I only use JPEG when I'm making wallpapers because customers told me that on win. vista, it only accepts jpg/jpeg files for wallpapers.
