I'm really confused on what images we're allowed to use in graphics that we make.
Can we use images for free from those stock web pages, or do we have to ask?
And then there are people who want me to edit images for their role-play layouts.. are we allowed to do that?

If it's watermarked, then it requires purchasing, if not, it's free game (as far as editing goes) but claiming it as your own is still a no no. My teachers in the past have told me, once you make an edit to a picture, it becomes your own art, but I myself feel this is wrong. I guess at that point it's all about ethics...

Well, could I get banned for editing it, then selling it for gold? Because, I was doing things like this, but then was confused if I was allowed to or not, so I stopped.

I would recommend asking for permission from now on, that's the best advice I can give you. :T I don't know what will get you banned, but I'm sure you'll get a warning before that happens.

Your best bet, on my opinion, is to search for pictures that you can use under the creative commons search that can specifically be used in manipulations and the like. That way, it is licensed. You can always put the source somewhere in the manip afterwards, and state in your shop/profile the pictures you use are not your own, but are legal to use under the creative commons license.

I'm not sure if you mean the image usage overall or just on gaia. Cause I know you can't use anime images and any images that you don't have a license to on gaia. If I am offered a commision, I tend to only accept images chosen from stock websites, rather than they provide me an image I don't know where it came from.
Outside of gaia, I tend to just stick to free stock websites because it's safer. Images like celebrities, etc, I tend to stay away from because of the controversy it comes with copyright. :s

I never use images that aren't stock.
I always tell customers that I need the artist's permission if I am to use someone else's work.

Part of me just wants to find a loophole and go, "PAY FOR YOUR BANNER AND GET A FREE IMAGE ON IT!"
