Kori was actually quite enjoying the sandwiches that had been laid out before her by her contacts butler. Though that could be because she hadn’t bothered to eat anything solid since the night before; sleeping in a strange bed tended to upset both her sleep patterns and her appetite. She still loved the fact that she got to travel as part of her job, though the fact that she didn’t have to attend school certainly helped. She still had online tutoring since she was expected to finish high school but it was fairly independent and actually a little fun without having to deal with the teachers or other students. Not to mention her assignments were often tailored to her most recent job as a representative for the elementals on earth.

Currently she was enjoying lunch at the rather posh abode of a Mister I. M. Portent. He was a fairly major supplier of several types of general-use medical devices. The “healie-thingies” (as she preferred to refer to them) used to fix scratches, cuts, fractures and broken bones. It was like something out of a sci-fi, though most of her life had become like that and worked using some type of radiation that would redirect and enhance the patients’ healing energies or something else that sounded vaguely spiritual.

Mr. Portent was polite and business-like, to her relief. He didn’t try to sweet-talk himself into her favour, although he must be aware of her political power… or power in general. Truthfully, even when they weren’t aware of her status she often had to put up with a certain amount of flirting thanks to her youth and appearance. He also hadn’t started hinting at something about her parentage like an annoying large number of her other contacts had. They’d get this look in their eyes like she was missing some great joke, it drove her nuts.

Kori was just taking a sip of tea when the butler came back in (when he left, she didn’t know) and announced the arrival of a representative of Mr. Honcho. Following him was a rather tall, rather muscled/broad shouldered man appearing to be in his twenties. He was rather stylishly dressed, and had his dark brown hair sweeping into his eyes and around his face. Looking closer, Kori re-estimated his age to mid-twenties, though his skin appeared young his eyes looked older, his expression and manner more mature.

Mr. Portent stood up to welcome him “Ah, Wes I wasn’t expecting the delivery until tomorrow, but thank you for coming. Korina, this is Wes Elegos. Wes, this is Korina Parker, we were just discussing ---.”

Wes gave a small bow as he was introduced.

“Nice to meet you” Kori said as she offered her hand to shake but he bent over it and kissed her knuckle instead. She found it odd, considering most people didn’t do that unless they were aware of whom she was, which was impossible for him, but he didn’t seem to be flirting either. A blushed stained her cheeks still blushed, to her frustration; she felt she really should be used to this chivalry crap. Wes didn’t say anything as he watched her skin change but the look in his eyes changed to one of amusement, Mr. Portent was also rather amused, his polite smile widening slightly. Kori rather resented all of it.
Mr. Portent gained her attention again by saying “Wes is a representative of Mr. Honcho whose group develops and manufactures the TS-147. He’s brought the latest shipment with him, I believe. I know you’ve been asking for them.”

“Ah, yes.” A small smile on his face, Wes presented Mr. Portent with a digital signature device and politely asked for a confirmation signature.

Kori smiled at the taller man “Then I guess it’s been nice doing business with you as well. Do you mind if I check them out?”
As they traveled to the room where the delivery had been placed, Kori watched Wes with some confusion. He was different, not human. But he wasn’t elemental either.
Wes tensed slightly, feeling the prickle of her stare on the back of his neck, he wondered if he had somehow offended her. Mr. Portent, no doubt, thought she was merely admiring Wes’ physique from behind.

Wes stood to the side once they’d reached the room watching attentively but saying nothing.

Kori stepped forward to inspect the merchandise herself; taking a knife from her sleeve she quickly slashed her arm before using the device to heal the wound.

Seeing the blood, Wes’ eyes widened before he turned his head away and brought a hand up to rub at his nose.

She smiled apologetically and asked Wes “How many more of these do you think we could make a deal for?”

“I’m not certain, but I heard that we currently have 480 of this model that haven’t been spoken for,” was his immediate reply.

“I’ll take them, at the same price that these come in. Is that possible?” Kori grinned, she quite liked this part.

In an apologetic tone he replied, “I’m afraid I’m not authorized to make this sort of transaction, you’ll have to speak with one of my superiors.” In a slightly brighter tone “but I don’t see why not”

She grinned “Perfect”, almost, “let’s make it work then. How can I speak with whoever I need to speak with?”

Kori had to admit, she was getting pretty excited about this whole thing. She’d made the calls and scheduled the meeting. And then she’d found out where she was going. A castle, they were based in a medieval castle. She’d gotten so excited she’d googled the damn thing and its history. Then she’d gone on to memorize at least half of it. If only she was able to do the same for her school work. Course, as much Emie would insist that she could, Kori doubted any of it would stay in her head. It’s not like she needed highschool geography, anyway.

After getting out of her hired car (and awkwardly apologizing to her driver for not waiting for him to open the door for her) Kori finally had a chance to get a good look at the castle she’d been obsessing over. There was a rather familiar man waiting for her at the bottom of the steps as well. Dragging her eyes away she retrieved the rest of her things from the vehicle and confirmed a pickup time with her driver.

This done she made her way over to her host, admiring him on the way. Once again, he was dressed stylishly, though, happily, his outfit showed off his physique more than the last. Wes also seemed more relaxed standing at the base of the stairs waiting for her.

“Hello”

He smiled “Good afternoon”

“It is, isn’t it? Glad to see the rain stay away for a change” dear god we were talking about the weather.

Her comment got a shrug out of him “The rain is nicer out here than in the city, at least” his tone was almost apologetic.

“I would imagine so. I haven’t had a whole lot of time to be out in the country. I was excited to be able to come out here.” I took a few steps back to admire the (ramparts or part of castle) “Not to mention this beautiful castle.”

As if on cue he started telling me basic facts like age and architecture. As a matter of course, Kori had to interrupt him. She knew these things and she was going to show her knowledge off! It definitely did not hurt that he gave her an appreciative smile in response. She even went a little bit into one of the old lords of the place. Wes gently asked her for some more details before filling in the rest. He had this stuff memorized, did they give tours? Not that he sounded like a tour guide. She’d almost say he sounded like a teacher except none of her teachers sounded quite that patient with her.

After they went inside, Wes seemed to fall into the whole tour guide role again. At least he was the type of tour guide that cared about the stuff he was talking about.

They passed a very few people in the halls, all dressed stylishly. Until a small group of kids ran past, well, they tried to run past. Wes caught the leader by the shoulder and told them to go outside if they were going to run. There were eyes rolled, and Kori had to smile.

“Hey” Wes retorted defensively “If I’m not allowed to run in here, neither are you.”

He got a muttered “Fine” from one of the kids and they walked sedately to the end of the hall before tearing around the corner. A few moments later Kori heard the sound of something crashing to the floor. “We’re okay!” came a yell as well as the sound of something being put to rights.

Wes just snorted and shook his head in response.

Kori continued smiling.

Eventually, they got to Mr.Honcho’s office. Kori squared her shoulders and straightened her spine. It was time for some business.
