I haven't read any Japanese literature, as far as I know, but I've watched a lot of cartoons based off Japanese novels. For example: Howl's Moving Castle, Ai no Kusabi, Kyo Kara Maoh!, and Mirage of a Blaze.
I highly recommend Howl's Moving Castle and Kyo Kara Maoh! Don't watch Mirage of a Blaze. Ai no Kusabi was okay. smile

Howl's Moving castle was based off a British novel which I have yet to read, but I've heard is better than the movie. Kyo Kara Maoh is based off of light novels I think but the plot seemed too shounen ai-ish for me sweatdrop ... A lot of anime are based off light novels, the most well known being Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu. It's kind of sad they aren't more well known to English speakers.

XD Also, forgive me for loving yaoi. All in all, I'm not much of a reader, though when I do read a novel, it would be an English fantasy book like Spellsinger or Her Majesty's Wizard or the Belgariad. The closest I come to Japanese literature is the anime I watch and the manga I read. Shijuku the Ebony Oddity Hurm... I think it's safe to say that I think I've read the novel of Spirited Away... Was it better than the movie?

Was it better than the movie? I wasn't saying it's bad to like yaoi or anything. sweatdrop I have lots of friends who do (practically every female anime fan I know likes it). I'm just not into it, that's all. Huh, never heard of those two. Before I began following my self-imposed English book ban, most of what I read was classics. Oh yeah, and Harry Potter. xd Maybe I should ask Rikki if it's OK to make an Off-Topic sub-forum...

@ Bokusenou
No worries. I'm a proud yaoi fan, but unlike most yaoi fans, I try not to rub it in people's faces. Try. =D
And I love Harry Potter, though I only read the fanfiction now. The books are too... PG-13 for me. I need more violence. Sex doesn't hurt. XD I didn't like the seventh book at all, though.
We really do need an off topic thread. I like to ramble.

While there have been a few yaoi fans I've met who've tried to "convert" me, and some who thought it was weird that a female anime fan didn't like yaoi, most of them have been really nice people. Harry Potter's great. I read Japanese Harry/Ginny fics sometimes but otherwise I haven't read much HP fanfiction, and some of the English ones I've read have scared me enough to stick to Japanese ones...

Great story! Urashima Tarou gets referanced a lot in Japanese popular culture too. My favorite Japanese legend is probably Tsuru no Ongaeshi/The Crane's Repayment of Kindness ( English version and Japanese version here).

I haven't met anyone crazier than a squealer for yaoi fangirls. (that be my friend Jess) Apparently I have surpassed her in my yaoi obssession, despite my lack of squealing.
I love Alternate Universe or crossover HP fanfiction, but only when they're well written. They don't necessarily need a pairing either.

LOL I love fanfiction without pairings because pairings seem to be so overdone in fanfics. Not really a fan of Alternate Universe ones but crossovers can be amusing. I haven't seen any HP crossover fanfics but as I said, I haven't read much HP fanfiction in general. Who are your favorite HP pairings?

I'm going to begin reading the "Tale of Genji." **applause* It's a huge book! It'll take me a while to read.
