Noble 6 is a replacement of Thom a spartan who was killed 2 weeks before the battle of Reach, Carter blames himself for Thoms death for not doing anything. Noble 6 is the "lone wolf" of the group he is quite and effective.

Bungie stated that the fans were upset that Master Cheif won't be in any games coming out soon, so they decided to dedicate one of the main characters to be like him and they chose the character you're gonna play. So if you're in love with MC, you got a mini version of him in Halo: Reach
