The sound of the morning drizzle gently tapped on the windows of Washington's room, almost as if it was trying to wake her up. It was something she was used to. Rain was never a new thing to the northwest state. It was the only kind of weather she knew how to deal with actually. Her long blonde hair was matted and tangled from the long night of restless sleeping. Ever since the war had started, she had been worried. She wasn't one to be in wars at all. She barely had a military force. All she had ever done to help out Alfred was build bombers during WWII. Now she just produced airliners. With this war, she had remained neutral and refused to make or send any airplanes to any other state. Thankfully Idaho had no quarrel with her and Oregon wasn't in the war yet...

Finally the young state rose from her large bed and headed to the bathroom to get someone ready for the day. After a quick shower, Skylar tried to comb her hair but it was to no avail. It had been tangled for days. She had spent most of the week thinking and worrying about this whole war. Starting from the bottom of her hair, she took the time to get all the knots out, letting her slightly damp hair rest on her shoulders. The towel was wrapped around her chest, covering her body as she combed her hair back and made herself look somewhat presentable to the world. Her boss was starting to get worried that she hadn't left the house in days and he forced her to leave and move around town. It was so hard for her not to worry. Her carefree lifestyle was starting to break now that the stress was starting to fill her life. Fantastic. It was the last thing she needed in her life. Walking to the closet, she opened up the doors and looked at the old cardboard cut out of Kurt Cobain and sighed. "I have no idea what to do..." Even though she knew he wasn't really there, it seemed to help a bit. Grabbing a green hoodie and jeans, she quickly got dressed and headed back downstairs.

Skylar's boss said to leave the house, but he didn't say where. She had no idea where to go. She didn't want any coffee or go out and read a book. She needed to desperately talk to someone who was in the same situation as her. The jar of nutella in the cupboard seemed to know what she was thinking. Walking by the kitchen island on the way to the door, the jar mysteriously fell out of the cupboard and onto the counter with a large 'smack'. It caught her attention immediately. Picking it up, it went with her to the car.

The drive to Oregon's house was never boring. Just long. It didn't bother her a bit as Skylar was quite used to it by now It was much easier to get to his house now than it had been in the past. She enjoyed visiting her brother and forcing him to fill up her gas. As she crossed the bridge over the Columbia River to get across into Oregon, she was stopped and forced to show ID. The guard in Oregon was starting to get paranoid. though no threats against the state had been made so far, they still had to keep their guard up. It seemed like this whole war was such a stupid idea. She would have to kick whomever's a** had started it. Douche. It was probably Texas...

Pulling up to Oregon's driveway, she slowly stepped out of her car into the rain. It felt darker and heavier here than back at her place. Was this an ominous sign? She didn't like to think like that. With the jar of nutella in hand, she walked to the door and gently knocked a few times. The hood covered her freshly dried hair from getting wet again as she waited for him to answer. "Come on Oregon! It's me!" Hopefully he would answer. Hopefully.

Thankfully Oregon hadn't been bothered much by the other states taking part in this silly war. Both Ethan and his boss wanted as little to do with it as possible. He stayed in the background, trying to keep his economy from being hurt too much by this. He already had budgeting issues, and didn't need any more financial problems right now. Determined to keep himself going without taking sides, he made sure the airports were still functioning, still bringing in money. His boss cared more about the economics than he did. Oregon just didn't want to cause Alfred as much trouble as the others were. He was sure it must be a stressful time for the states' guardian. Ethan would rather share a coffee with the nation than give him reason to worry.

Yet, despite all the efforts he was making to keep his economy up, his people were still hit hard. They weren't spending as much, and were staying in their homes. The normally busy and bustling coffee shops were now empty and quiet. He'd gone into one of them a few days before, and the silence that greeted him had been eerie. Seeing himself how slow everything was was bad enough, but he didn't have to be in those places to know things were bad. He could feel his people's anxiety. The fear that the fighting happening in other states might start here as well permeated through the entire state. That alone was taking a toll on Ethan's attitude and energy level. For the past couple of weeks he'd spent most of his time indoors. He tried to get outside, to hike, bike, and run as usual. He /could/ do those things, and did to keep his boss from noticing how run down he was, but it only burned him out more.

Just this morning Oregon had tried to go biking, but could only go for about a mile -only a fraction of what he could normally do- before becoming exhausted. He'd had to take a break before heading back to the house. It was embarrassing and frustrating how much less he could do now. If it weren't for this ridiculous civil war he'd still be healthy and energetic. After the short bike ride, Ethan had done almost nothing but sleep or read.

Oregon paused his reading to look out the window at the garden. It was sill blooming and thriving when most everything else around him, like his people and economy, were shriveling and wilting. He was shaken out of his sleepy mind-wandering when someone knocked on the door. He frowned and set the book down, hesitantly walking through the hallway and stopping at the entrance to the living room. Looking warily at the door, he pondered over whether to open it or just pretend he wasn't home. It was most likely one of the other states requesting aid or demanding he take a side, and he wanted nothing to do with it. Muffled through the door, a voice called out for him. Washington. A wash of relief spread through Ethan as he hurried to open the door. He had nothing to worry about with her. She wouldn't nag him into fighting the other states.

He hadn't been expecting company, and he wasn't feeling his best, so he hadn't bothered to change out of the sweat pants and cosy, worn out sweatshirt that he'd slept in after he got back from the bike ride and taken a nap. He was taking a lot of those lately, it seemed. "Sorry, Skylar. Come in." He held the door open for the neighboring state and ushered her in, not wanting her to be caught out in the rain any longer than she had to be. The nutella in her hand caught his eye and he smiled. That would definitely help cheer him up.

Skylar told herself to ignore the rain but it was hard to do so right now. It felt like so heavy and horrid. It could just be the fact that she had spent the night before watching crime shows so her mind was in a state of paranoia. What if California had come over and forced him in help her? What if we was beaten and unable to get up... or worse!? It was taking him forever to get to the door. She bit her lip and pounded on the door again. "Ethan! Please open it!" If he wasn't going to answer it soon she would have to break in and check.

It wasn't until the door finally answered that Skylar finally began to relax. He looked perfectly fine, and that set her at ease. Instead of walking past him, she quickly hugged him and didn't let go. She saw the state as an older brother to her. After all, they had pretty much grown up together and she saw him as her older brother. She would never be able to think of him as less. "I'm glad you're ok." After a long hug, she let go and smiled at him. "Oh, I brought some nutella. We could make some sandwiches with peanut butter or something?"

Skylar didn't want to admit it, but she was craving coffee. Her economy had been suffering as well and now after several budget cuts, she was down to only lunch and dinner. No breakfast. And no coffee. No longer could she afford it. If Ethan had even just a cup she would probably fight him to the death to get it. Walking in, she sat down on the couch and sighed. "How are you doing? Anyone pestering you to join their side yet?"

Ethan blinked in surprise at the sudden hug, but didn't hesitate in returning it. He hadn't talked to Skylar in a while, and it was nice to see her again. Concerned at the relief in her voice, he brought her closer and hugged her more tightly. She must have really been worried. Ethan knew he'd been a bit more withdrawn than usual once this civil war had started, but apparently he'd isolated himself too much if he hadn't been keeping in touch with Washington. Even if he shut everyone else out, it just felt wrong to do that to her. She didn't deserve that.

Even though he wouldn't have minded hugging her for a bit longer, he let her go when she stepped back from the hug. Oregon smiled at the mention of the nutella. "A nutella and peanut butter sandwich sounds great.". And it did. He hadn't had nutella in a while. He'd had to do with cheap meals and snacks. Thankfully the coffee he practically lived off of wasn't much different. He'd had to choose a cheaper flavor, but as long as he was willing to grind up his own coffee beans it wasn't that expensive. That was fine by him. Coffee always tasted best when the beans were freshly ground at home anyway.

He stood by the couch and sighed. "Not really. They've mostly left me alone, thank goodness. What about you? Have you been harassed?" Ethan frowned at the thought. He felt protective for her like he would a little sister. He didn't like fighting, but if someone hurt or bothered Washington, he'd do something about it... maybe pour hot coffee on them or run them over with a bike. It wasn't the same as fighting, but it would work.

"Come on let's go make those sandwiches,"Ethan said as he held out his hand to her. Noticing how damp she was from the rain, he figured she could use a hot drink to help her warm up. "And it's not the usual good stuff I have, but I have some coffee I was going to brew. Do you want some?"
