Someone brought up a good point in a recent discussion - what are the consequences of not talking about sex ed and relationships? Between parents and their children/teens, between teachers and students, etc.
I said that the consequences of not talking about sex are the ones we see a lot in this guild - the spread of misinformation, the sometimes complete lack of information, mistakes stemming from both of the aforementioned points, life-changing decisions, etc.
As for the consequences of not talking about relationships, they're summed up really well in this book, "Frog or Prince?: The Smart Girl's Guide to Boyfriends."
Some of the points mentioned in her book:
- Girls model their own romantic relationships on what they've learned from their parents.
- Girls who haven't been shown how to have healthy relationships can end up in a cycle of abusive relationships, because they don't know how to pick/work towards a healthy relationship.
- Self-respect is a big issue - girls can't make healthy decisions if they don't have respect for themselves (there's other factors to this too).
Other thoughts and points? Discuss! blaugh
