What would you do for the short term survival? Talking from day one up to a year into the outbreak.
PostPosted: Fri Jul 23, 2010 12:46 pm

Attempt to avoid ALL contact with "Them" and gather all water and snack foods/non perishables and move from place to place in a city. I have NO knowledge of survival outside of civilization so I plan to make due in an area I am familiar with biggrin
This would not work for me if it was fast. running zombies though. I would take a car and drive around, away from the most populated areas such as the shopping centers or big city areas (Las Vegas' Strip for example). Only when I am in dire need of supplies and such, I will park my car in a nearby area and WALK(Run most likely razz ) into a shooping area, just for supplies.
Most likely to have a baseball bat or something blunt to take with me. And a gun. The noise wouldn't matter if you were no longer in the area right?
Idk how this would work out for me, so if there are some flaws tell meh lulz razz sweatdrop

you will not be able to avoid all contact especially as you plan to plan to stay withing a"civilized city'

I am on the opinion that majority of the zeds will follow their prey aka living humans from the big cities as all the living flee them. There will still be high numbers but not giant masses.

The shopping center will have been the first hit in the loot. You are best off with small mom and pop shops. Less costumers and less zeds, and less people who know of them thus less looting.

A gun shot an un-silenced one will attrack zeds from all the hearing radius. Then if the zed moan it will attract more and etc.

Well, attempt to avoid all contact when necessary biggrin What if not that many people actually mde it past their own homes and work spaces to even think of looting a shopping center?

Well, I think you would only get that if it was a situation with a large group of zeds attacking without warning. Or a very aggressive strain.

That is exactly why this guild exists, so we can hone our plans and use each others expertise to make our survival as absolute as possible.

Off of that, would wiring a building with a crap-ton of explosives, luring as many zeds into it as possible, and then flipping the switch be a very good idea?

Luckily I have a friend out there who's family owns a hunting lodge. They store alot of food for costumers as well as water. Also since it is a hunting lodge they conveniantly have alot of guns and sharpshooters. My friend is also a knife inthusiast for melee weapons. All that put together out in a more rural area gives me enough time to equip a vehicle and to pre-arm myself so that when suplies run low I'll be able to slip into town checking appartments, stores, and gas stations for foods that wont go bad easily, and slip back away from society once more until I need more supplies.

Priority one would be to fortify as best you can and make sure you have an escape route. Then have a back-up plan... Then have about 9 or 10 back-up plans for the back-up plan.

That is true but honestly I had thought of those planings long ago. The only true risk is going to the lodge in the first place, but as I said before this is a more rural area and we would notice the news reports from larger cities at least a week before it reached our area. As for fortification, the lodge has an upper balcony type platform with removable stairs (obviously no longer needed) these stairs would be turned into more basic pieces of wood that would be used to board up every window 2 times over. The balcony would serve as a way to minimize the number of infected near the household and is at a hight where it could reach the roof ( if needed) as well as being safe to jump off of. This would serve as an escape route from an imidiate threat within the living area. If infected in large numbers were to assemble and fall in line with our lodge than we could use the preprepared transport as a form of retreat.

For short term I would say take to the open dessert roads in a car that has quite a bit of space. I would want to be near towns NOT cities (To high of a chance for zeds) in order to be near supplies. I would always want to be on the move to make it hard for zeds to find me.

Build an armored SUV, and use that as travel. I don't see why it couldn't work. Also take as much resources as I need.

This is a topic much discussed: The pros and cons of having a big sturdy vehicle over going on foot. The overwhelming consensus is if you are gathering supplies or executing clearing operations a large sturdy vehicle may be a good choice. The problem is maintaining your vehicle and keeping it in all the fluids it needs, chief among them being gasoline.
Another thing you have to keep in mind is the basic fact that engines make noise. Lots of noise. That noise is pretty much just you ringing the dinner bell the whole time your driving. One more issue is the armoring of the vehicle. Putting armor on your vehicle is a tricky thing. More or less by putting armor on it you are making it more resilient to attack but also increasing it's weight. By increasing it's weight you are also decreasing the amount it can carry, it's top speed, overall wear and tear on the moving parts because of said added weight, and finally how far it can go before needing a refuel. I'm not saying it's a bad idea but I am saying it's good to think of everything.

Don't forget they can tip over your car.

Me well it depends. How many zombies are we talking about? Are we talking about "Night of the liveing dead" amount which I think wasen't much like mybe about ten. I fell asleep during the movie so I don't really know. Are we talking about "Resident Evil 2 and 3" amount of zombies is a whole town. Or "High School Of The Dead" amount which is the entire world.

I'd gather what supplires I can. My dad has a work shop in the basement hich has all the wood thats needed to board up the house, along with some makeshift weapons, such as a spear made out of a kitchen knife, a broom handle, and some rope can make one. It might not be very good but better than nothing. My dad also made wooden swords for christmas one year so we have some weapons (I don't know about durablitiy but he says there about as strong as the one in some of the martial arts schools he goes to), everyone in my family aside form one person has done some martail arts, so weve got basic hand-to-hand. Food would have to be bought though.
