I found a book about how detectives go about a real murder....well a few but its about detectives solving them in LAPD...it was written by a journalist so it's sort of like a documentary.
The Killing Season: A Summer Inside An LAPD Homicide Division by Miles Corwin

It sounds like Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets. Only it's set in Boltimore instead of LA.
Currently reading Between Good and Evil, the autobiography of the former head of the FBI's profiling unit when it was still in it's infancy. Very interesting guy! However, he is very sure of his own achievements. Not that that is much of a criticism given what he has done, but you know. Humble pie brah! :p
