The Eastern Air Temple is one of the four temples of the Air Nomads, and one of the two, the other being the Western Air Temple, which exclusively housed female Airbenders. However, its population was wiped out at the beginning of The War during the Air Nomad Genocide. Guru Pathik lived here for an extended period of time, where he eventually taught Aang how to use the Avatar State.

Upon the arrival of a new generation of airbenders, many rules were cast aside. One of which was gender discrimination.
How could they rebuild their people if yin and yang were seperate?
What made them so much better than everyone else that they could refuse a meal based on what was in it?
Why should they sit idly by when villiages were attacked?
This along with many other questions caused the Eastern temple to become something much more progressive. The Eastern temple embraces all life has to offer, including the nasty bits.
