I've noticed there's a lot of hatred for Hetalia fans online. Some of it is just annoyance based on the actions of a small number of fans. But quite a lot of people presume all the fans are hyperactive squealing pre-pubescent girls who love Yaoi and ship everyone and everything (OK, some of us are, but not everybody!)

Has anyone experienced negative reactions from mentioning they are a fan?

I apologize in advance for this long rant. I'd appreciate it if you took the time to read it, though. <33

*raises hand* I've gotten a handful of negative reactions. And I've seen this topic discussed a lot.

I think a lot of people presume that because the fandom is so...HUGE. Seriously. Almost as big as Naruto or Bleach. The reason why this fandom is so huge? It's mostly because of the Yaoi. As much as I hate to admit it, it is. Not the history. Not the main plot itself. But allll the gay. (Let's face it. That's why most of the members of this guild are still into APH. ;D) Hetalia doesn't even have that much Yaoi/Shounen-Ai/BL/whatever in it (save for SuFin, GerIta and the other instances [like Japan having had sex with Greece in that one manga strip]), it's the fans that's making it seem like that.

...Which is why everyone seems to hate the fans. Because they're making Hetalia into a big fat Yaoi party that it wasn't supposed to be in the first place. xDD

They also seem to hate the fans because some of the fans are complete idiots after all, like you had said, Pandora. Some fans don't know how to type in proper English, always talk about how "kawaii sooper sexeh Amuriikah and Engurando are together!!1!one", and never know when to shut up about all those 'BECOME ONE KOLKOLKOLARU" jokes (granted, it's pretty funny, but only when it's used at the right time.)

Also, the fans in real life. I've read about certain experiences people have had with cosplayers. Apparently, there was this Austria cosplayer that loved Austria/Prussia and absolutely HATED Hungary--so much that she had expressed her anger by taking out other Hungary cosplayers. And then she had said something about taking videos of her kissing everyone or some other creepy crap.

And then there was this Belarus who got pissed off at people who requested Russia/Liet because she absolutely hated the pairing.

Gosh, if there's one thing I don't like, it's pairing bashing. I'm one of the very few Russia/China lovers. I like other pairings with Russia and with China, but this one I love the most. I get comments about how much someone dislikes Russia with China and blahblahblah RussUS blahblahblah RussPruss blahblahblah why do I even like it. Um, excuse me. Who are you to tell me that I'm wrong for liking what I like? Anyway, that's another reason why people dislike the fandom--their ability to shove their own opinions down other people's throats.

*sighs* All of it is just a little too much. I had decided to take a break from Hetalia as soon as Kuroshitsuji II had come out. And I did. This, for the people that are wondering, is why I'm not roleplaying as often.

But...you know what?
Even with all the hate for the fans, I'm going to keep lovin' my Spamano, USUK, and RoChu. And I'm going to keep making up insane crack pairings--like Greece/Korea. WorldxWorld ftw, dammit! <3

Wow. That...was a very very very long rant. XD
My experience seems so tiny next to that...

One of my guy friends (the one who cosplay Death the Kid. U know him, Tix-chan) gave me funny looks and criticized Hetalia for, like, the entire school year. JUST because he couldn't read Japanese and had never seen another person being dragged away before. (HRE and Chibitalia). Now I can understand the fear of boyxboy elements because he's a guy. BUT! He even called me a Nazi because I said Germany was just misunderstood during WWII. IT'S CALLED A JOKE, PEOPLE! GOD! WAS THAT REALLY CALLED FOR?! I could go on all day on this but I won't.

So that's my experience.

Yup. I read it all.

I agree. I've met some fans who were lovely people, and only go crazy when they are sure of their audience. And I've come into contact with others who send the wrong message to other fans and innocent bystanders. I particularly dislike the ones that get into character and never once break that (expecially if they are being someone like Prussia or Belarus who have a "quirky" personality stare ). It makes it hard to talk to them, or arrange photoshoots.

As a Belarus coplayer its very difficult getting a photo with a Russia cosplayer if they shriek and run before I've even asked if they mind posing with me cry

I'm not sure about the yaoi content though. I think there's a lot of implied pairings. I'm sure Hidekaz Himaruya knows what he's doing and is deliberatly appealing to yaoi fans without actually having R-rated stuff in there.

I'd not considered the RusChina pairing before, but I like that its histroically relevant. I can even accept crack pairings if the fan has done some research and found a link.

Sweets is perfect. There's not much else to say other than how right you are.

I mean I BASH(only to myself) and LOATHE WITH SOOOOOOOOOO MUCH PASSION, anything that involves genderbending a couple and M-preg, but that's with any fandom. I'll even admit I can't stand hetero too much, but if I'm on FF.net and I see Hungary/Austria, it's not as if I can just strip the person of there rights to like it. Besides, Hungary's pretty awesome (I think so at least....) and it DOES make sense so I can't see why people have to hate so much...

Oh, wait.....
Switzerland/Liechtenstein.
I forgot about that, yeah, I don't care, I hate that couple in everything more than the sweetness for sibling love. Deep, deep hate... ^^;

Yeah, I have, ever since Hetalia became mainstream. People look down on it like they did when Naruto was super popular (though that seems to have died down some, since I don't see as many Naruto cosplayers at conventions anymore... Oh poor Sasuke, why did you run past the girls' bathroom?!). It makes me sad because we're all supposed to love anime, right? But this infighting is ridiculous.

There's still plenty of Naruto cosplayers here in the UK. And if it makes difference, I didn't like it before it was mainstream wink

I thought you said your friends all loved it or the one stopped when HRE and Italy kissed?

Are you saying straight guys cant like yaoi!?
PostPosted: Sun Sep 26, 2010 2:30 pm

It's totally normal for straight guys to like yaoi! ...In my mind, at least.

And, I am one of the Hetalia fans who totaly gets dissed for loving it! My friend assumed that because I like Hetalia, I'm TOTALLY obsessed with yaoi, and he totally ranted to me about it! And, he's, like, the fifth person to grouch at me for it.
