so one of my non-christian friends and i got into a discussion the other day and religion came up... he had some questions i couldnt answer even after looking them up.... could anyone possibly help?

the difference b/w catholics and evangelical christians? is their one? should they be considered 2 totally seperate things or the same?

gnosticism?... is it really a christian branch? ive read that it was and that it was a cult.... the question i got was why the were basically iniallated by the catholics?.... then again i think all christian faiths were being killed at the time if im not mistaken....

and why are books omitted from the bible? like the catholics have extra books and the book judas came up specifically in the convo....

can anyone help me to help my friend?

They are two separate things. Catholics are a very traditional, structured church, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. Evangelicals tend to have more modern services, and are generally fairly independent from each other. My particular denomination has no central authority whatsoever, save Christ Himself. The Catholics have a very well defined chain o' command.
More differences between Catholics and Protestants

From what I have read of the Gnostic Bible, I can not consider them to be Christian. They are related to Christianity, sure, but there are huge differences in theology. The Catholics had a lot to do with the Bible, but they did not write it, and you can find lists of what was considered canon by the early church that is older than the Catholic church, or written early enough that they can be taken as reliable when they talk about the early church. Interestingly enough, you don't find the Apocrypha in this list, but we can go into that one later, if you'd like.

Because they weren't there originally, or considered canon by the early church fathers. I've found that even the Jews did not consider these books canonical. Jerome fought bitterly against even translating them into the Vulgate. They also have a tendency to deviate from or directly contradict what the Bible says. They can often be filed under "Useful, but not authoritative."

I know, he is awwssommee! XD

I was about to answer between catholic and evangelists...

simple: Catholics are up to TRADITION and doing things that are not really in the bible. They are SO INTO statues that are named mary, jesus, saint paul, joseph( jesus's daddy in human form) and... some other statues about angels...

While the evngelists... they believe jesus as the son of god and he died for us.... but the catholics... they have to go purgatory to cleanse their sins... ( I think I know more about expierence, I'm catholic before, but never found happiness there) ... which is not mentioned in the bible. Plus, worst part is, Catholicism is... somehow, a part of paganism... (correct me if Im wrong)

... all I can say is, Evangelists (protestants or born again's) are better christians... can't say best coz'' no one is perfect to be a best christian though...

Plus: Evangelists don't rely on tradition, but to the Bible.

I was raised a Southern Baptist and converted to Catholicism when I married my now ex-husband. There are many differnences between Protestants and Catholics. The Catholic mass is very formal and ritualistic. In my experience they don't do much witnessing. As to why there are extra books in the Catholic Bible I'm not sure. btw I am a Christian and claim no denomination now. When I attend church, it's a tiny,close-knit Methodist church. Our services mostly consist of praise and worship but we do have a lesson as well.
I've always understood gnosticism to mean that people don't not believe there's a God but they are also not sure that God exists. This probably hasn't helped much but it's all I have.
Peace and Blessings heart
