Michael Ballack insisted that he remains to be the captain of the German squad, expecting to take the captaincy back after his return from injury. After Philipp Lahm, taking over Ballack as captain for the 2010 WC due to the latter's injury, declared his intentions of staying as the captain: "It is clear I would like to retain the captaincy. The job is a lot of fun for me. Why should I then voluntarily give up the role?" Ballack responded to the statements by stating, "A player can't request on what position he wants to play, and it is the same with the captaincy. One should respect this, there are hierarchies." Joakim Loew has kept mum about this, but Bastian Schweinsteiger sided with Ballack, saying, "He [Ballack] is the captain of the national team and, if he returns, he will also recover the armband." Personally, I think Lahm is a very able captain, judging by the success in the Cup and his overall play. Ballack isn't getting any younger, and he should have a slice of humble pie and give the blossoming youngsters a chance. I don't think he was much missed at the tournament, either, but his experience will still be valuable for the team. Biased opinion is biased =PAny thoughts? Sources:

Yeah, I agree with you there. In 4 years, Ballack will be 38, Lahm will be 30, so...:U

Well, seeing that I have never seen Ballack play nor see him in action as Captain (I know, blasphemous), I do not really know who 'deserves' it more which to me is how it is turning out to be.
To be honest, I think Schweinsteiger should be Captain. He proved it in this WC that he can be a team leader and keep everything together for the team.
But since it is between Ballack and Lahm, I choose the latter simply because he is younger, and that to me will accomodate well for the already young German NT. Not saying that Ballack is old for it, it is just that it would be nice seeing someone else who has been through what they have in this WC and lead them under their wings, oh-ho, and I think Lahm would be perfect for doing so. :/

I would like Lahm to stay, he has been a great leader so far. To me he deserves it.

As I said in the thread, I think Basti should be captain. He's the one arguing cards, giving the circle pep talk, shouting instructions on the field. Lahm's a good captain for sure, but he likes to run his mouth as much as Ballack likes losing his temper – and neither are good qualities in a leader, let's be honest.
I'm Team Capitan Basti through and through.
Seeing him don the captain's armband last Saturday made my heart explode with pride.

Ehh, this whole thing makes me so freaking upset :C
I really loved Ballack in '08 (when I started following Die Mannschaft) and he did wonders for the team back then. It's so heartbreaking for me to see some of the newer fans getting to know him now as all this wank is going on. He was a great captain, but he needs to ditch Becker now.
I love Lahm too, and I think he did a great job. I'm proud of him for speaking his mind, regardless of how the media twisted it.
But, when it boils down to it, I feel like Bastian at this point is the best suited for the job. I feel like he could be the only one who could captain the team without creating a rift between the young and experienced players.
But if it comes down to choosing between Ballack and Lahm, I'm gonna have to side with Lahm ( emo ), simply because he's got more longevity at this point and I'm extremely happy with how things went at this WC for the team as a whole.
Aaaagh, I wish this hadn't become such a public nightmare gonk

It's true, Basti wouldn't grab it from Ballack if the latter wasn't ready to let go – which is part of what makes him so awesome. I'm hoping Micha realizes his star has shone and it's time to wind down, but knowing him…well. we'll see.

Schweini did the job on the field, although Lahmy had the armband. In the last match, Schweini did even better. So I think, if Ballack gives up captaincy, then it should be Schweini.
