I was curious about others opinions and views on working with organic materials such blood, bones, feathers, pelts, hair, and things of the sort in ritual, spellwork, crafting of tools or accessories, or even decoration.
Some questions I have off the top of my head to get things started would be...
- Have you ever worked with any of these types of materials and if you don't mind sharing, what for? If you have, how did you come across them?
- Are there any organic materials you would not work with and for what reasons?
- Would you believe any such materials to be more or less powerful than say herbs, stones, candles, rope, and other frequently used items in one's craft and rites?
- If you were out and about and happened to come across such available organic items, would you think it a waste not to use them? Or, that it would be disrespectful to use them or perhaps you could possibly go either way depending on the situation and vibes from said items that are involved?
These are just some questions I could ponder up pertaining to the subject but if you would like to discuss something else related feel free!

I will be answering these questions as they came up ^_^ GREAT IDEA MATRON!! There are only a few materials I have worked with. I have worked with my own blood, and bones,specifically fish bones, chicken bones, and feathers. I used my blood in a binding. My Book Of Shadows. I used the bones in a spell on Samhain. I did not kill aything for them, the animals were used for food, so i took the bones from the discard pile cleaned them really well and used them as an offering to the spirits... It was a ritural me and my friend were doing. I use feathers to rep.. Air on my alter, and also I made a fan of feathers for ritual use. The book binding was amazing, and the ritural was just fantastic. when we were done we threw the bones into the bon fire we had.. I will not work with anothers blood, UNLESS they gave it willingly, and if the appropriate precaution was taken, I mean latex gloves, sterile items use dto obtain the blood, and if the meaning was clear and the intent is not to harm another person... I had to really think on that one. I do not believe they are any more or less powerful then the herbs, stones, candles, ect. I believe each item has a spirit, if you will, and that they are both useful and both have their purpose. I think that is really a personal belife held as to if they are or are not, so i say they are not more or less powerful...hopefully that makes sence. Hm..Now that is a good question. I would have to think about it when it actually happens... There are many things to think about when getting things out of the wild lol. I mean, there are plenty of diseases that can be spread from bird feathers, bones, and the such. it woudl have to depend on the circumstances for me ^_^ OH Sorry if things are hard to read, I just got my wisdom teeth cut out and the pain meds are making me a little loopy, and dispite me trying to pay attention, I know mistakes will happen XD

celticfaith when we were done we threw the bones into the bon fire we had.. Burning things is a particular favorite of mine for offerings. There's a well that I will occasionally offer to as well as a few trees, but there's just something very formal, in my opinion about casting an offering into a fire. celticfaith I will not work with anothers blood, UNLESS they gave it willingly, and if the appropriate precaution was taken, I mean latex gloves, sterile items use dto obtain the blood, and if the meaning was clear and the intent is not to harm another person... I had to really think on that one. I agree on that, and furthermore, it would have to be almost a necessity as a result of a very serious situation for me to work with another persons blood. But, I generally don't work with others anyway and with the exception of a few very close friends, I would probably tell someone to do whatever working they were wanting done themselves for something so 'heavy' or find someone else to do it. celticfaith I do not believe they are any more or less powerful then the herbs, stones, candles, ect. It does, and I agree yet slightly disagree lol I too feel that everything has it's own energies and really any physical item one works with is tool. It's there to help grasp a hold of the desired energies so that the practitioner can then manipulate and work with them. I tend to not use a whole lot of tools of any sort when spellworking (a lot of it's done in my mind and in the spiritual realm) but the ones I do I make count. So, on some occasions when I've worked with organic materials it's been because, they are not necessarily more or less powerful, but have a stronger connection or representation to how I'm using them if they are available. In other words, if I have such things at my disposal, and it's suits the situation, I feel they might have more of a 'kick' to them than alternative materials. If That made any sense lol celticfaith Hm..Now that is a good question. I would have to think about it when it actually happens... Especially sense it would all depend on how I came about it, if there was this feeling telling me I found it for a reason or was even lead to it, but also on the other hand some things just emit this sense of 'leave it be' My family would deer hunt every year so there would always be random deer parts hanging around and that I always felt was just a waste so I have a lot of decorations I've made from bones, jewelry from teeth, and even a few tools fashioned from bones and hide.

Hm. I think that using blood in any ritual, in my mind should be forbidden. I do not think that blood is in any way superior or should be a prime choice when doing rituals. I can understand the use- to connect you very deeply with a tool or object, or what have you, but I do disagree with it's usage. I understand that in antiquity it has been used very often but I try to stay away from it, for several reasons. #1- the world we life in is a scary one and we do not need to contract an illness from others #2- we don't need to be labeled satanic because we have a reputation of using blood.
I may work with bone as decoration, maybe as a type of garb for older wiccans in their crone or ancient one aspects. I can understand the use of bones in samhain rituals, but at the same time my understanding is that the gods demand no sacrifice, and bones are in some ways a byproduct of said sacrifice, that it is kind of anti- Wiccan. I understand the bones may have been taken from a food product, and if one is going to hunt I definitely believe in using everything of the animal, but for offerings, I do not think that bones should be used as offering.
I understand that every being builds off of the previous ones and I could see using pelts and bones and feathers and claws and what have you for jewelry or decoration to help maybe align ourselves to that particular animal, but used as anything else I think would be against our religious morals.
And to make a correction- although it is often said you can get "diseases" or "sick" from bones, it is not true. Dead tissue cannot cause you harm. The bones are not harmful and can't make you sick.

i've only worked with deer antlers as a repesentation of the god. I just found them in my yard one day....I think my dogs took them from someones yard...lol

Probebly blood because I just don't like it. I might use it if I had to but I would try to find a way to use something elts.

I think it would depend on what you wanted to use them for. In some cases I'm sure that one would be more usefull then the other.

It would depend on the item and how it felt to me.
