Layout Forum layout is very simple, especially here on Gaia. There are posts, and there are buttons. Here on Gaia, each post is shown as a speech bubble next to the avatar and username of the user who submitted it. Above the post are the date and time (in YOUR time zone) it was submitted. The two buttons you need to know are the "Quote" button above each post and the "Post Reply" buttons at the top and bottom of each page. They are pretty self-explanatory, but I will cover them in the next few posts.

Posting Now that you've read some posts in the forum, it's time to submit one of your own. Simply click the "Post Reply" button at the top or bottom of the page and type what you want to say. You can then hit the "Preview" button to see what your post will look like or hit "Submit". This will submit your post to the forum for everyone to read. The "Preview" button is used when you use BBCode or emotes in your post and want to see what the finished product will look like. This is especially useful when you are changing the colour or alignment of text or posting an image or link.

Quotes & Quoting Remember that "Quote" button I mentioned in earlier? The one that hangs out above each post? Clicking that will quote the post directly below it. It will take you to the "new post" window, and the typing box will already have text in it. Simply type below that text after the "" tag and submit. This is good for keeping track of responses when several conversations are going on in one thread. Want to quote something that isn't a post? There is also a "Quote" button on the "new post" screen. Simply click the "Quote" button, type the quote and click the button again to close the tag. The two types of quotes mentioned above look like this: [quote="Tree Spirit Deora"]This is what it looks like when you quote another user.[/quote] Tree Spirit Deora This is what it looks like when you quote another user. If you quote another user, that person's username MUST be in quotes in the open quote tag. (More on open and close tags in the BBCode post.) [quote]This is what it looks like when you just post a quote.[/quote] Quote: This is what it looks like when you just post a quote.

Post Actions Post actions make things more interesting, and they are sometimes required in various threads, especially contests. Make sure you know what post actions you want ahead of time, though, because you cannot add/change them if you go back and edit your post. Here is a list of everything you can do with post actions: Change your post style Display items from your inventory Display people on your friends list Roll dice Generate a random number Change Your Post Style Tired of your posts all being speech bubbles? Want to differentiate between thought and speech in a roleplay or make something look like a document? Post styles have got you covered. Simply open the "Post Style" dropdown and select the style you want. The little purple box next to the dropdown menu will show you a preview of the post style. Display Items from Your Inventory If you are selling or giving away an item or items, or if you are hosting a contest and wish to display the various prizes, you can do that with the "Display Inventory" option in the "Post Style" menu. Clicking this option will show you a list of your inventory. Simply click on each item and then click "Add to Display". When you are done, just click in the text box to type your post like normal, if you haven't already. Display People on Your Friends List "Display Friends" is also located in the "Post Style" menu and is similar to the "Display Inventory" option. You can display up to 6 friends, which you simply select from each dropdown. You can also change the background of the display box. Roll Dice The "Roll Dice" option under the "Post Action" dropdown allows you to display a dice roll above your post. You can roll one kind of dice at a time and up to 20 of that kind at once. If you've ever played D&D or any other tabletop game, you probably recognise the various dice types. If not, they're pretty self-explanatory. Generate a Random Number This is in the same menu as the "Roll Dice" option. Simply select it then type the lowest possible number and the highest possible number. Your random number will show up above your post in the forum.

Polls Polls are useful for many reasons. If you have a TL;DR thread that you just want an opinion on, polls can do that. If you have a shop in the Minishops forum, you can make a visitor counter. You can just put up a random poll, too. It's up to you. You can create a poll when you start a thread. It is with the "Post Actions" option. Click the little arrow by "Add Poll" to get started. Next, type a question, or, if you're making a visitor counter, you can either type "Visitors" or something along that line or just leave it blank. Then, type your first option. (For a visitor counter, people usually put "+1") Don't worry about a length, if the poll isn't time sensitive (they usually aren't). After you've added your first option, click "add another poll option" just to make sure it takes it (I don't know if you need to do this anymore, but I think you used to.). As long as the last poll option is blank, it won't show up, so don't worry. You won't have an extra option. Then just make your first post like normal.

BBCode Basics Gaia makes BBCode easy. When you make a new post, there is a multitude of buttons across the top. All of those are pre-done BBCode. Personally, I like to put in the code myself. BBCode is very simple. It consists of opening tags and end tags. The opening tag goes at the beginning of whatever you're adding/formatting, and the end tag goes at the end. Simple, right? Here are the basic tags. TextChanging Text[u]Underlined Text[/u] [b]Bold Text[/b] [i]Italicised Text[/i] [strike]Strike-out Text[/strike]
Underlined TextBold TextItalicised TextStrike-out TextChanging Text Size[size=12]Normal Sized Text[/size] [size=8]Small Text[/size] [size=18]Large Text[/size]
Normal Sized TextSmall TextLarge TextIt's common sense. The smaller the size number, the smaller the text. The larger the number, the larger the text. Gaia has a maximum text size, I think, but you can mess around and find out for yourself.Coloured Text[color=steelblue]Steel Blue Text[/color] [color=green]Green Text[/color]
Steel Blue TextGreen TextThese are my two favourite text colours. To find more colour tags, go HERE.Aligning Text[align=left]Normal Alignment[/align] [align=center]Centered Text[/align] [align=right]Right-side Text[/align]
Normal Alignment Centered Text Right-side Text You probably won't ever need the first one, but the point is, you put the direction into the opening tag for where you want your text.Adding a URLhttp://www.gaiaonline.com [url=http://www.gaiaonline.com]A link to Gaia.[/url]
http://www.gaiaonline.comA link to Gaia.See, you can just type a URL link, or you can make it pretty by using BBCode tags, as above. Also, notice that the opening tag does not have a end bracket until after the actual URL, unlike all the other BBCode tags. Also, make sure you add the "http://" in there or it won't work.ImagesAdding Images[img]http://a2.cdn.gaiaonline.com/gaia/members/ava/f0/58/61c42361ff58f0_flip.png?t=1288017950_6.00_10[/img]
Images are very VERY simple. You type the opening tag, paste in the URL of the image, then add the end tag. An image opening tag has a closed bracket before the image URL, unlike a regular URL.Images as Links[url=http://www.gaiaonline.com][img]http://a2.cdn.gaiaonline.com/gaia/members/ava/f0/58/61c42361ff58f0_flip.png?t=1288017950_6.00_10[/img][/url]
If you click this image, it will take you to the Gaia homepage. Basically, instead of putting text between the URL tags like I did earlier, I put image tags and an image URL in there.Aligning Images[imgleft]http://a2.cdn.gaiaonline.com/gaia/members/ava/f0/58/61c42361ff58f0_flip.png?t=1288017950_6.00_10[/imgleft][imgright]http://a2.cdn.gaiaonline.com/gaia/members/ava/f0/58/61c42361ff58f0_flip.png?t=1288017950_6.00_10[/imgright]
These images are on the same level as each other because, while it doesn't show in the code box because the whole coding is too long, there is no space between the end tag of the first image and the opening tag of the second. You can also put text between them like so: I just typed after the end tag of the second image and aligned this text to the center. The text goes nicely in the middle and will stay as such until the length of the text exceeds the vertical measurement of the image(s). You don't have to change the text alignment, but I thought it would look better. Now, if I want to put text after these images without it going in between them, I have to hit "Enter/Return" several times until the number of lines exceeds the vertical length of the images. So, if you want to put text next to an image, make sure you have enough text to take up a good amount of space, or get a smaller image. If you have a large image and just one or two lines of text for it, don't use the image align tags. You can also align images using the same tags as you do for text, but the text will not wrap around it. It will either go above or below the image, depending on where you put the text. Basically, if you align to the center, make sure everything you want aligned that way is within the tags.

Navigating the Guild The guild forums navigate just like the main forums on Gaia. There is a main board, with its own threads, then there are subforums which also have their own threads. To access a subforum, simply select the appropriate link from the list at the top of the main board page. To get back to the main board from a subforum, just click "Order of the Talking Tree" at the top of the page (in the guild). If you would like to create a new thread, simply click the "New Topic" button. Everyone in the guild is allowed to make threads. Just make sure each thread is in the appropriate subforum.
