El Pretérito
(The Preterit)

When is it used?

-Point of Time
-To describe specific events in the past with a beginning and an end.
-To narrate a principle action. (Without detail!)
-Series of events
-To describe an action which interrupts another.
-A sudden change in mental state


Regular Verb Stem Changes:

Hablar:
yo: Hablé
tú: Hablaste
él/ella/usted: habló
nosotros: Hablamos
vosotros: Hablasteis
ellos/ellas/ustedes: Hablaron

The er/ir have the same ending forms, so I will only put one example for both.

Comer:
yo: comí
tú: comiste
él/ella/usted: Com
nosotros: comimos
vosotros: comisteis
ellos/ellas/ustedes: comieron

When is it used?

-Action which is habitual or repeated
-Action which is not finished
-A description in the past
>time/climate/hour/characteristics
-Period of Time
-An action which is interrupted
