There are so many circualted ideas about zombies and zombie-like beings, and it's such an interesting field to debate because.. well, it's pure speculation lol. Yeah, we can rationalize by what we know to be true of the human body and mind, but really (viral zombies excluded), what's rational about the walking dead? That being said, I'd like to hear what each of you have to say about the possibilities of becoming/killing/creating zombies.
Personally, I see it most probable as an outbreak similar to that in the 28 Days Later series (i.e. a viral plague that destroys the parts of the mind related to pain reception, inhibition of rage, etc).

I agree with that.
I saw on the History Channel that in the revolutionary and somtimes in the civil wars, since the bullets weren't fired at such high trajectory and were usually little balls of led and not the familiar bullet shape, were often imbedded in a soldier's body rather than passing through. Sometimes soldiers would get them imbedded in thier brains and it would for lack of better words turn them into a zombie. There were accounts of soldiers walking aimlessly and running into things, repeating orders, grunt or cry sounds that they'd made when the bullet had embedded in them, and that would not respond to their name or any forms of communication. It would usually happen more often during the major battles when there was alot of smoke and bullets flying askew, and it was said that they would have to corral the affected men, identify them and if they could notify their families that they were incapacitated and ask permission to kill them honorably.
But otherwise I bet the later stages of rabies would turn a human into a zombie. You've already got the drooling, blood-shot, bulgy eyes, aggressive behavior. Then there's the fact that in the genesis of "psychology" in early insane asylums when they gave up hope of ever curing their subjects, they'd give them a dose of sedative, then stick a sharp object up their nose, break the barrier between their nasal cavity and brain and scramble their frontal lobe to render them placid and get rid of much of their cognitive abilities, planning and solving skills, personality, emotions and behaviors.
That way they were little more than animals to feed and keep tied down. Plus the CIA and FBI are just now starting to come out about the fact that they have experimented with mind-control, though they don't like admitting it. The brain, though complex and as little as a centimeter's difference in deciding where to poke can mean the difference between retardation and blindness, isn't really too hard to play with. I'm sure after running a few hundred trials stabbing and prodding certain areas of the brain, I could make someone act like a movie zombie. Probably less, if you just want them to just lay there, drool and groan though.

Watch Quarantine for an idealistic rabies-induced zombie effect, it's a good little baseline for the speculations. That is, if rabies wasn't completely fatal to humans before it could get to that point lol. But maybe if someone had a naturally built immunity that would allow the virus to progress that far, it could happen. Or maybe if it mutates in a similar fashion to the influenza virus and becomes multiple variations of more powerful, fast-metabolizing seed cells, so that it could progress fast enough in a human to cause the zombie effect before the eventul death, and spread like a pandemic we could never imagine. Yeah, I can see building one hell of a theory behind this lol.
