Marquis Donatien DeSade brought us such classics as "The Misfortunes of Virtue", "Philosophy in the Bedroom", and "The 120 Days of Sodom". He was a libertine writer during the 1700s, and some of his work has only recently become legal in a few countries. Prolific, violent, obscene, perverse...and a curious amount of philosophy...I love his work because it is an absolute stand against censorship...other people hate it because it really is a lot of smut. Still, we took the term "Sadism" from DeSade's name, so he still left his mark on culture.
Anywho, if you haven't heard of him, you probably don't want to go jumping in to his stuff blind. Misfortunes of Virtue is one of his tamer pieces, and it still has a good amount of rape, molestation, and other crazy antics. If you have heard of him...what do you think?
