A small breeze blew through the town of Verdanturf, carrying with it the sweet smell of flowers and fresh cut grass. The air in this small town was known for being clean and fragrant, because the wind never blows volcanic ash from Mt. Chimney through the town. It was the perfect place to live, if you like small towns. Yes, it was a beautiful place.
The breeze softly tousled Clara's auburn curls as she sat on the fence that surrounded her grandparent's backyard. The area was enclosed because her grandparents raised Pokemon here. Clara often came out here to enjoy the fresh air, as well as spend time with her favorite Pokemon, a young Ponyta she'd nicknamed Flicka. It's mother was a Rapidash that belonged to Clara's grandmother. It gave birth to Flicka just last year and her grandmother entrusted the young foal to Clara, knowing it would make her happy to have a Pokemon of her own. And Clara's happiness meant everything to them.
Clara sighed and smiled as Flicka trotted over to her. Sitting up on the fence, she was taller than the young fire horse. She stroked Flicka's long nose lovingly. "Oh Flicka," she said with a sigh. "It's another beautiful day in Verdanturf Town. But when isn't it beautiful here? Still...it's a bit boring I'm afraid." Clara often found herself confiding her innermost feelings with Flicka. The young Ponyta seemed like the only being on Pokearth who truly understood Clara.
"I know this place has done wonders for my health," she continued talking, looking straight into Flicka's eyes as if it was listening intently and even responding to her. "It's made life more peaceful and bearable for me. But it's not enough to cure me completely. It just eases the pain. I may look like I'm doing much better to everyone else...but I'm not you know. I can tell that there isn't much time left. Life here has been wonderful, don't get me wrong. But it isn't actually helping - it's just having a numbing effect. It's like I can't feel anything, and that's no way to live, girl."
Clara sighed again, turning her gaze towards the bright blue sky above her. Puffy white clouds floated on the breeze. She smiled serenely. It really was so peaceful here. But her life lacked adventure. She knew full well, however, that leaving here would put her health at a much greater risk. Clara looked back at Flicka with sad eyes.
"Well at least I have you Flicka. And my grandparents, too. I guess I should feel lucky to be surrounded by people who love me so much."

Alice Key ☁ ☂ ☃ ☼It was a beautiful day to be traveling. The sun was shining, the birds were singing, but all Alice wanted to do was complain. "Moo~om... Are we there yet?" Alice repeatedly banged her head against the neck of the Salamence they were flying on. "This ride is sooooo boring. I just want to visit Auntie then play with her Pokemon all day." She looked down to see if she could point out their location, but quickly snapped her head back up to her sitting position; she sometimes forgot she was deathly afraid of heights. Her eyes had caught a glimpse of land in the moment they had to look where they were going. "Hey, Mom? Is that Hoenn over there? Is that where we are going? It is, isn't it?" Alice's mom smiled. She remarked that it was good that her daughter knew so much about geography. Alice beamed at how much she knew too.
Several minutes later the Salamence landed on the ground with a boom, and dry dirt settled on the grass puffed out from under the grand Pokemon. Alice slid down it's side after her mom and patted it head, as if a thank you for taking them the distance from Johto to Hoenn. Her mother suggested she go to the contest hall for a bit while she talked to her aunt about what has happened over the past year. Alice nodded happily. Her dream was to become a top coordinator, just like her mother, and she took great interest in watching these contests as well. Hopefully one day she would be as graceful as them on the stage. "Alrighty Mom." Alice smiled sweetly and skipped off to the contest hall.
This being her closest aunt's house, Alice came here often. She knew exactly where the red building was and began to get giddy as she approached. The glass doors slid open to reveal a huge crowd of people. A man behind the counter spied her and beckoned her over. "Alice! I haven't seen you in a while! How've you been?" This man's name was Marty, and he worked behind the counter organizing Pokemon contests. Alice shook her head. "Not now, Marty! I want to know the reason for this big crowd!" She put on a serious face. Marty laughed weakly at her seriousness about crowds and contests. "Hmm, I'm sorry about this, but this here crowd is the audience to the last contest that we just hosted here. It was the grand championship. There were lots of famous coordinators. You should've seen it, there was--" Alice put a finger in his face. "You're saying I -JUST- missed the championship?!" She seethed, and Marty shrugged. "Aaaaaahhhg! I'm not in a good mood anymore." She pivoted and walked out of the contest hall to go to her aunt's house. Maybe she'd made Alice chocolate chip cookies or something.
Alice was in her grandma's house in the same minute. This town was small and Alice didn't make it any bigger by running across it in less than 30 seconds. She tripped right before and fell into the open door of her aunt's house. "Oof." She frowned and got up, rubbing her elbow. Her aunt greeted her lovingly in the anteroom. "Back so soon, are we? Quick, your mother and I have a surprise for you." Her aunt chuckled and walked to the dining room where her mother was sitting with a cup of coffee in her hands. She patted the couch next to her for Alice to sit down. "Now Alice, we know that you are getting older and we know that you have always wanted a Pokemon of your own--" Alice once again interrupted the conversation. "I'm getting my own Pokemon? Really? Give it to me now... Please!!" The two young women laughed and Alice's aunt held out a Pokeball. Alice snatched it from her hands. She was about to see what was inside of it, but her mother snatched it away just as quickly. "Okay Alice, we won't make you sit through that speech but you have to listen to this. This Pokemon isn't a toy, alright?" Alice nodded solemnly. She was very responsible although she didn't seem like it. Her mother let out the Pokemon that was inside and it was a Happiny. Alice almost squealed out loud, but that would've scared the little Pokemon. She timidly patted the head of the small creature, and it turned around to look at her. It smiled and clapped it's hands together. "Mom, this is the best thing ever! Thank you so so so so much." She hugged her mom and her mom trusted her with the Happiny, now in it's Pokeball.
"That's not all, Alice." Her aunt said, and made a hand gesture so she could come to her. In her hand she had a Poketch, the latest technology. All coordinators around Pokearth had one. She carefully put it around her wrist and let Alice marvel it. Alice beamed and hugged her aunt as well. She said good-bye and went outside to fiddle with the device.☁ ☂ ☃ ☼

At that moment, a thin, elderly woman with long white hair pulled back in a braid emerged from the house. Her wrinkled face brightened when she saw Clara talking to Flicka again.
"Talking to that Ponyta again, child?" The old woman leaned forward against the fence, stretching an arm out to gently pet Flicka as well. Clara smiled at her grandmother's remark.
"Oh Gramma..."
"Your grandfather and I worry about you, child. We're afraid you're not happy here." Her grandmother placed a withered hand on Clara's. "You know your happiness is all that matters to us. It means everything-"
"Gramma," Clara cut off the old woman. But she smiled sweetly and took her grandmother's hand in her own. "Gramma," she said again more softly, "I am happy here. This place is wonderful. I don't think I could be more happy anywhere else."
Her grandmother returned the smile, though she wasn't convinced. But hearing those words from her granddaughter was not uncommon. Clara was always putting on a happy face. She was eager to help around the house and do all that she could for her grandparents even though she was in no condition to do so. It was just her nature. She was the sweetest girl on this Pokearth, and that was the truth. It was such a shame...such a waste of a perfectly good soul. Why did things have to be this way? A tear slid down the old woman's wrinkled cheek.
"Clara...." she started, but stopped when her granddaughter reached out and wiped the tear from her face, bright smile still on her face.
"Don't be sad. I'm fine, Gramma. Really, I am. I think I'll go for a walk around town. Will you be alright for a while?"
Her grandmother smiled, shaking her head. That was just like Clara, worrying about others. "Fine, child. Just fine. Go on, get out of here you." Clara hopped off the fence and planted a kiss on her grandmother's cheek before skipping off.

[ Alice Key ☁ ☂ ☃ ☼ Alice, her eyes glued on the Poketch, walked across town to the bench that was near the Pokemon Center and plopped down on it. She would figure this thing out before she used it.
It had only been a few minutes, and Alice quickly figured out how to use her new Poketch, and even though the apps were very sparse this was by far the coolest thing she'd ever owned. She decided she wanted to see the time. Oh, just press the button a few times and there was the time, right down to the second. She wanted to track her steps? Just press the button a few times again and there was a pedometer, right on her wrist. While flipping to another app, Alice stopped on the one that had her Pokemon and their relative health and condition. Oh yeah, I have that cute Happiny... She quit touching her Poketch and held the Happiny's Pokeball in her hands. She let it out and as soon as it knew where it was it immediately sat on Alice's lap and bounced up and down. It was quite the excited Pokemon. It was very small and it could easily sit in her palm. She remembered that her aunt was a Pokemon breeder, so this Happiny must've been hers, and just hatched from an egg or something.
"Oh right! You need a name! Hmm..." Alice looked up into the sky for inspiration. Her Happiny had now stood up and was attempting to jump up and down, but it's little stubby legs prevented it from doing that. "How about... Aryll? Yeah, your name is Aryll now! She smiled and Aryll smiled back. The two were instantly friends.☁ ☂ ☃ ☼

Clara strolled at a leisurely pace around the small town. She'd taken this route many times before; there were only so many places to go in this town and she'd seen them all in the past five years she'd been living here with her grandparents. As she walked, she began to think back to her parents and to five years ago when she moved to Verdanturf. Her surroundings blurred as the memories flooded her mind.
Clara had been sick ever since she was born. The doctors said she'd be lucky to make it to ten years old. But here she was, fourteen and still around. Still, just because she'd lived longer than expected, didn't mean she was in the clear. Everyday, she could feel her body growing weaker.
Clara lived with her parents in Sootopolis City. It was a grand place, but secluded. It wasn't exactly the ideal living environment for a sickly child, however. Her condition worsened as she grew older, and her parents noticed this all too well. They'd heard that Verdanturf Town was a great place for those who were weak or ill because the air was so clean. Her mother's parents lived in Verdanturf and agreed to take Clara into their home. That was five years ago.
It was hard to be away from her parents, but Clara's health greatly improved living in Verdanturf. It definitely helped improve her quality of life, as well as prolonged it. Clara's parents came to visit her often, though she couldn't understand why they just didn't move to Verdanturf with her. It was hard being so far away from them. But her father's work wouldn't allow it. But Clara pleaded with them, and they considered it. Then the accident happened...
It was just one year after moving in with her grandparents. Clara was 10 years old. Her father had agreed to quit his job and find work closer to Verdanturf. With Mauville City right next to it and Rustoboro connected by a newly built tunnel, there were two bustling cities with plenty of work to be found. Her parents were ready to say goodbye to Sootopolis for good. Things were looking up.
But it didn't last. Because Sootopolis was located out in the middle of the ocean, the only way to the mainland was either by Pokemon or boat. Clara's parents were not trainers and did not have Pokemon of their own, so they boarded a small boat to take them to the mainland. They'd made this trip many times before, and nothing seemed out of the ordinary. But the Weather Institute was calling for a bad storm that day, despite the clear blue skies that made it seem otherwise. Ignoring the prediction, a couple of boats set sail that day...including the one Clara's parents were taking.
But clouds rolled in out of nowhere, darkening the sky. It looked like nighttime in the middle of the day. Rain poured from the sky and lightning flashed dangerously. The once peaceful sea tossed and turned in the gale force winds. Soon, the storm had turned into full scale typhoon. The waves were too rough to navigate through, and the boats capsized, dragging their passengers down to the bottom of the sea.
And just like that, out of the blue, Clara's parents were gone. The following year was hard. So many horrible events had befallen her and it seemed so unfair. All Clara could ask was why? Why did life insist on taking every little happiness she had away from her? That whole year, Clara hardly left her grandparents home. When she did go outside, it was never past their own backyard. She hardly spoke, hardly ate. And then one day, things went back to normal again. Her grandparents had no explanation for the strange behavior. But they didn't question it, as they were just glad to see Clara happy again. But Clara had simply decided she would no longer give in to all the negativity. She had a short time left, and she wasn't going to spend it depressed. Instead, she would get the most out of every moment that she possibly could. And with that mindset, the past three years had been a blessing to her.
Clara's vision refocused again and the memories faded. She looked around and quickly noted that she had walked as far as the Pokemon Center in Town. It was not uncommon to see new people all the time in this town, as it hosted many contests. Many of the travelers often stayed around the Pokemon Center when the contests were not going on, so it was a great place to meet new people. Clara walked over. There was a big contest today, so there were bound to be lots of people around.
As she roamed around, she noticed a young girl sitting on a bench near the Center with a little pink Pokemon in her lap. It was tiny - probably recently hatched. She'd seen lots of different kinds of Pokemon, but never this one. It might have been native to another region, though. Clara put on her best friendly smile and approached the girl.
"Hi there," she greeted the girl. "Is that little Pokemon yours?"

Alice Key ☁ ☂ ☃ ☼ Aryll suddenly got tired and burrowed into Alice's jacket for warmth. She sighed and smiled. A baby Pokemon would hopefully be easy to take care of. She gently took the Happiny out of her jacket and wrapped it in her scarf instead. It would be better for the sleeping Pokemon and then Alice could still walk around.
Her Poketch beeped signifying it was noon, and Alice decided it was probably time to go home to have lunch. Her aunt, being a breeder, cooked wonderful foods for both humans and Pokemon. Alice grew hungry just thinking about it. She began bundling up Aryll so she would be easier to carry home and was about to get up when a girl, older than Alice, came up to her.
"Oh! Hi!" Alice smiled widely. Upon being asked if her Pokemon was hers, Alice quickly uncovered the face of her Happiny. And laughed when she heard a quiet snore. "Yup! This is Aryll." Alice didn't bother saying what kind of Pokemon Aryll was because, coming from the city near the Safari Zone, Alice knew much about Pokemon, and assumed everyone else did too. She looked at this girl. She seemed to know about Pokemon, so Alice looked behind her to see if there was anything behind her that could resemble a Pokemon "Hey, do you have a Pokemon?" She asked curiously.☁ ☂ ☃ ☼

Clara smiled at the younger girl's curiosity. "I do have a Pokemon," she said to the girl. "But it's not with me. It's back at home. I live here in Verdanturf. Do you? I haven't seen you around here before." Clara knew some of the people who lived in the small town, but not everyone. And those she didn't know personally, she knew of them from having see them around town. But she definitely didn't remember seeing this particular girl.
"Did you come to see the contest?" she asked, seeing as that was why most people came to their sleepy little town.

Alice Key ☁ ☂ ☃ ☼ Alice was slightly disappointed that the girl didn't have her Pokemon with her. "Oh... Well that's okay. Maybe I can see it later?" She smiled. She'd never seen the girl while she visited Verndanturf Town all those times. But the girl said she lived here, and Alice wasn't one to doubt where people lived. "Really? Cool! I don't live here, but my aunt does, and we visit ALL the time. I'm surprised we've never seen each other."
She paused to answer the girl's next question. "Yes, I did. But I missed it by about 10 minutes. And it was a championship too! They aren't going to hold another one here for a couple of years. Her frustration that she didn't get to see at least a little bit of the contest came back to her. She pouted and crossed her arms. "That's basically the only thing to here too, and now that means I'm going to be bored my whole visit!"☁ ☂ ☃ ☼

Clara smiled sympathetically. She knew how the girl felt. There really was nothing else to do in this town. But at least she didn't live here 24/7. "Oh, that's too bad. I'm sorry you missed it. If it makes you feel better, I didn't see it either." Clara rarely watched major contests because they tended to be overcrowded. Normally, if she visited the contest tent, she'd go on a slow day with beginner coordinators competing in low ranked-competitions.
Then Clara realized that she'd been gone almost an hour from home. No doubt because she was wandering around so much. Normally, it wouldn't be a big deal for someone her age to go on a walk for more than an hour by themselves. However, her grandparents tended to worry when she stayed away too long.
'Well, it was nice seeing you and your Pokemon," she told the young girl. "But I really must be going now. If you're going to be staying a while, you can stop by and see my Pokemon if you'd like. I live at the end of road in a little yellow house with a blue roof. There's a big backyard that's fenced in. You can't miss it." Clara was about to go off, when she realized she hadn't even properly introduced herself.
"Oh, I'm Clara by the way. Clara Buxton."

Alice Key ☁ ☂ ☃ ☼ When the girl who introduced herself as Clara was about to leave, Alice stood up to object. But as she stood up her Happiny rolled off her lap but Alice managed to catch her several inches off the ground. Alice shuddered to what could've happened to her little Happiny. She recalled it back to its Pokeball and tied the scarf around her neck again, even when it wasn't cold at all. "Wait! Err- Clara!" Clara was a few feet away from her now, but hopefully she would stop to listen to her. "I'd like to come now, if you don't mind. I mean, I don't have anything to do... But first I need to ask my mom!" Alice ran off and left Clara standing there. While running to her aunt's house she turned her head and shouted back, "Oh right! I'm Alice!"
"Mooo~om!!!" Alice called as soon as she came through the door. She heard her mom's voice calling 'Alice?' from the kitchen. She skipped to the door and ran through the doorway, but hung on to the side with one hand so she swung slightly. "Mom! Can I go see my new friend's Pokemon?" Her mom gave a weird look, but smiled. "A new friend already? Haha! That's great, Alice~! Sure, go on." She nodded and was aboutt o leave when her aunt stopped her. "It's already your lunch time, Alice! You can go see those Pokemon but after that you come right home and have some lunch, alright? Oh, and Alice- Don't forget to ask your friend if she wants to come for lunch as well." With that she waved off Alice off.
She sped back from her house to the bench, but the girl was gone. Alice panicked, but saw her walking back to her house, so Alice followed her. "Alright, so are we going to see your Pokemon?" She got excited and on the way back to Clara's house Alice bombarded her with questions about her Pokemon.☁ ☂ ☃ ☼

Clara just smiled and nodded in response to Alice's question. She seemed so young and innocent. As they made their way back to Clara's house, Alice asked lots of questions about her Pokemon. She seemed to like Pokemon a lot, and know a lot about them. She probably knew more than Clara did, as Clara didn't really study much about Pokemon. She only knew what little her grandparents have told her about them and what she'd seen for herself (which wasn't much). Clara nodded and gave a lot of short answers to all of Alice's questions. For the most part, she tried to keep just what her Pokemon was a secret. Alice would see soon enough.
It wasn't a long walk back to the house. Soon enough, they could see the little yellow house with the blue roof around the bend. "There it is now," she said, pointing it out. "Come on, we'll go straight to the back." Clara went on ahead, around the house to the fenced in backyard. She hopped back on the fence, as she had been sitting earlier that day. There were some of her grandparents' Pokemon grazing in the backyard - a Delcatty, Donphan, Azumarill, and a Medicham. Flicka wasn't out; she was probably in the stable in the far back.
Clara put two fingers in her mouth and whistled. Sure enough, Flicka came bounding out of the stable headed straight for Clara and Alice.
"This is Flicka," Clara told Alice. "She's barely a year old."

Alice Key ☁ ☂ ☃ ☼ Clara wasted no time showing Alice her Pokemon. She had called her Pokemon over from the stables just by whistling. Just then a Ponyta ran over to them, and Clara told Alice that this Pokemon's name was Flicka. She saw Flicka coming, and realized she wasn't as big as the ones in the contest. Clara eased her confusion by saying that she was a year old. "Yeah, I can tell! She's small just like Aryll!" As she ran over to them, Alice laughed. "Wow! She's so cool!" Alice hesitated as she reached her hand out to stroke it. Sure, it was extremely nice, but didn't it have fire on it's fur? ☁ ☂ ☃ ☼

Clara noticed Alice's hesitation and smiled. To show her it was alright, Clara reached out and stroked Flicka's head and mane. Her hand ran right through the fire, but she didn't flinch at all.
"It's alright," Clara explained. "She won't burn you, unless she feels threatened. You can run your hands right through it. It's kind of like running your hands through water, only it feels warm instead of cool."

Alice Key ☁ ☂ ☃ ☼ Alice smiled at Clara's statement, and thrust her hand into the fire. It did feel like warm water. Alice laughed and rubbed her hand back and forth, back and forth over Flicka's head until it let out a gruff grunt and the fire got a little hotter. Alice quickly pulled back her hand and apologized in her mind to the Ponyta for petting it so much, and sat on the fence and watched Clara. She and her Pokemon were very well-bonded, and they were probably together since Flicka was born. Alice brought out Aryll's Pokeball and held her it in her hands. "I hope Aryll and I will be as good of friends as you and Flicka are." She smiled and called her Happiny out from the capsule, and held her in her lap. ☁ ☂ ☃ ☼
