Ok I have beaten the WHOLE game five times and I am still having trouble finding ALL the hearts in the game...
I keep missing about 2 3/4 whole heart containers/pieces
So is there only 18 Hearts in the game or 20 OR I am not finding them close enough...
Any help xp

Any help xp nope there is a maximum of 20 HC. the 3 you start with and the 4 full containers u get from defeating the bosses at the temples. and 52 pieces. use this guide to get all the pieces. I'm on my first playthrough of MM now, and i think i only need 8 or less heart pieces now. I'm right before the stone tower temple.
I have to say the most annoying heart piece was for depositing 5000+ rupees in the bank. xP I played for days constantly going into the bombers hideout for 100 rupees, depositing in the bank, resetting time, repeat. It took forever. The most fun was the clock town shooting gallery. 3nodding
Edit: I just need one more heart piece before i go to the moon, i'm just not sure which one i'm missing.

If you have enough masks (if you have all, Fierce Deity!~).. there are children on the Moon you can give them to.. and they send you to certain places where you can find a Heart Piece in each of them.

that game is so frigging HARD! dont feel bad if you cant find all of them. i actually only got 15 XD you just gotta keep trying
